You cannot disable Samsung’s moisture-detection safeguard through a supported setting. When a Galaxy phone shows a water-drop icon or “Moisture detected” and refuses wired charging, the safe solution is to disconnect the cable, dry the USB port completely, and then troubleshoot a warning that remains after the port is dry. Samsung uses the block to reduce the risk of corrosion and device damage, including on water-resistant models.
This guide addresses the common questions “My device displays a water drop icon and will not charge” and “The water drop icon won’t go away even when dry.” The practical distinction is whether moisture is still present or the phone is showing a stale warning. In both cases, forcing a cable connection is the wrong first move.
What the moisture warning means
Galaxy phones monitor the USB charging port for moisture. If the phone detects water or conductive residue, it stops wired charging so electricity does not pass through a wet connector. The warning can appear after a splash or submersion, but high humidity or condensation can trigger it even when the phone was never visibly wet.
Samsung’s support guidance does not document a switch, service-menu command, or approved override that turns off this protection. Trying to force wired charging while the warning is active can contribute to corrosion or other damage. The objective is therefore not to bypass detection; it is to remove the moisture and verify that the port is safe.

Samsung states that “even on water-resistant Galaxy devices, the charging port must be completely dry before charging.” Water resistance also varies by model and does not make a damp connector safe to energize. A water-resistant rating protects a device only within the conditions Samsung specifies; it is not permission to charge immediately after liquid exposure.
Can you turn off moisture detection in Settings?
No supported Samsung setting disables the moisture safeguard. The phone may offer ordinary USB preferences, developer options, or charging settings, but none of those is documented by Samsung as a safe way to override a wet-port block. An app or hidden-menu instruction that promises to force charging cannot establish that the connector is dry and may remove the warning without removing the risk.
If the alert is genuine, treat it as a hardware-safety message. If the port is already dry, use the restart and USBSettings-cache steps below rather than searching for an unofficial “disable” control. A missing menu option is normal on some models and software versions; it is not a reason to install an unfamiliar utility.

Follow these steps in order. Stop at any point if the phone, cable, or port appears damaged.
- Unplug the cable from the phone. If the charger is connected to a wall outlet, disconnect it there as well. Do not keep reconnecting the cable to see whether the warning has disappeared. Repeated tests can expose wet contacts to current.
- Remove accessories that can hold moisture. Take off a case if it covers the port or traps condensation. Inspect the USB cable’s plug; do not use a cable with visible water, corrosion, bent contacts, or debris. A damp plug can retrigger the warning even when the phone looks dry.
- Wipe the outside of the phone. Use a soft, clean, dry cloth. Dry around the bottom edge and the cable plug, but do not push the cloth or another object into the port. Pins, tissue, cotton swabs, and similar items can bend contacts or leave fibers behind.
- Point the port downward and gently shake the phone. Samsung Philippines advises five to 10 gentle shakes. Use only enough movement to help droplets leave the opening; forceful shaking can damage the phone or send liquid farther inside. Do not strike the phone against a surface.
- Let the phone dry in a ventilated place. Samsung’s US guidance refers to cool air, while regional guidance also mentions a fan. Place the device where air can circulate and keep the port facing downward when practical. Avoid applying heat. There is no single Samsung-US wait time that applies to every model, liquid, temperature, or humidity level.
- Wait until the port is completely dry, then test once. Reconnect a known-good cable only after the opening and plug are dry. If the warning returns, unplug immediately and continue with the persistent-warning steps below. Do not keep trying different cables while moisture may remain.
Do not treat a short period without visible droplets as proof that the connector is dry. Moisture can remain around the contacts or inside the cable plug, and charging before evaporation is complete defeats the protection the warning provides. If the phone was exposed to humidity, allow air circulation to continue even when no liquid can be seen.
When “Moisture detected” stays on after the port is dry
A warning that remains after careful drying can be caused by residual moisture, humidity, contamination on the connector, a damp cable, or a software state that has not refreshed. Samsung’s regional support instructions provide two software checks. Perform them only after the phone and cable have had time to dry; software troubleshooting cannot make a wet port safe.
Restart the phone
Turn the Galaxy phone off and back on using the normal power menu. After it has restarted, confirm that the port and cable are dry before trying wired charging again. A restart can clear a stale alert, but it does not make a wet port safe; drying remains the first requirement. If the warning appears immediately after reboot, disconnect the cable and return to the drying process rather than repeatedly restarting while connected.

Clear the USBSettings cache
On models and software versions that expose this system app, Samsung’s Philippines and Saudi Arabia guidance uses this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Open the app-list options and enable Show system apps (the wording can differ).
- Select USBSettings or USB Settings.
- Tap Storage.
- Choose Clear cache, then restart the phone.
Menu names and the presence of USBSettings vary by Galaxy model, carrier software, and One UI version. Clearing the cache is not an off switch for moisture detection; it only refreshes the system component that manages USB behavior. It does not erase personal photos, messages, or files, but the exact screens can differ. If you cannot find the app, do not install an unfamiliar package or change hidden developer settings. Use the model-specific support instructions instead.
After clearing the cache and restarting, make one wired-charge test with a dry, undamaged cable. If the alert comes back, the result is useful information: the phone may still sense moisture, residue, or a connector fault. Stop testing and arrange support rather than treating the cache step as a permanent bypass.
Can wireless charging help while the port dries?
Yes, but only if the exact Galaxy model supports wireless charging. Samsung says a compatible wireless charger may provide temporary power while you wait for the USB port to dry. Keep the phone’s exterior dry and follow the placement instructions for that model. Remove a wet case or accessory before placing the phone on a pad.
Wireless charging does not disable moisture detection and does not make it safe to plug a cable into a damp port. Galaxy charging capabilities differ by model, so confirm wireless-charging support for the specific phone rather than assuming that every Galaxy device can use a pad. If the phone does not support wireless charging, continue the drying process or seek service; do not use an adapter intended to bypass the USB warning.
Wireless charging is therefore a temporary power option, not a competing fix. The decision is simple: use it only when the model supports it and the phone’s exterior is dry; otherwise leave the device disconnected until the port is dry. A charging pad cannot repair corrosion, remove residue, or prove that the USB contacts are safe.
Which step should you take next?
| What you observe | Next action | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| The phone was splashed, submerged, or exposed to condensation. | Disconnect the cable, wipe the exterior, hold the port downward, gently shake it five to 10 times, and dry it with cool circulating air. | Do not reconnect until the port and cable are completely dry. |
| The warning appeared in a humid place but no liquid is visible. | Use the same drying procedure and give the connector time to evaporate. Humidity alone can trigger the sensor. | Invisible condensation can still make wired charging unsafe. |
| The cable plug is wet, corroded, bent, or dirty. | Set that cable aside and use only a known-good, dry cable for a later test. | A replacement cable does not make a wet phone safe; the port must also be dry. |
| The port is dry, but the water-drop icon remains after drying. | Restart the phone. If the option exists, clear the USBSettings cache through Settings → Apps → Show system apps → USBSettings/USB Settings → Storage → Clear cache. | Labels and availability depend on model and software version. |
| You need power while waiting and the phone supports wireless charging. | Use a compatible wireless charger with the dry phone. | This is a temporary charging method, not a way to turn off wired-port protection. |
| The warning returns with a dry, known-good cable, or the phone still will not charge. | Contact Samsung support or visit an authorized service center for inspection. | Persistent alerts can require model-specific diagnosis; do not keep forcing the connector. |
Practices that can make the problem worse
- Repeatedly plugging in the charger: Each attempt can expose wet contacts to current and increase the chance of corrosion or damage.
- Using force: Shake gently, not violently. Do not strike the phone or use compressed force to drive liquid deeper into the port.
- Inserting objects into the USB port: Pins, tissue, cotton swabs, and similar items can bend contacts, leave fibers, or push residue inside.
- Assuming water resistance eliminates the warning: A water-resistant rating does not remove the requirement for a dry charging port.
- Blaming the phone without checking the cable: A damp or corroded plug can retrigger the warning even after the phone itself has dried. Replace the cable with a dry, undamaged one for the test.
- Looking for an unofficial bypass: Unsupported apps, hidden-menu instructions, or forced-charging accessories can defeat a safety measure without proving that the connector is safe.
- Using heat as a shortcut: Samsung’s current US advice emphasizes cool air. Do not substitute a high-temperature source for ventilation or assume that faster evaporation is harmless.
How long should drying take?
Drying time depends on the liquid, how much entered the port, airflow, temperature, humidity, and the phone’s construction. Samsung’s current US guidance reviewed for this issue does not set one universal waiting period. An older Samsung Malaysia regional page gives an approximate one-to-two-hour evaporation time, but that figure is regional guidance and is not a guarantee for every Galaxy phone or environment.

Use the condition of the port—not an arbitrary timer—as the decision point. The phone is ready for a wired-charge test only when the opening and cable plug are completely dry and the warning has cleared or has been addressed by the restart/cache procedure. If the phone was exposed to a liquid other than clean water, visible dryness may not remove conductive residue, so continued warnings deserve professional inspection.
Do not interpret the one-to-two-hour regional estimate as a countdown after which charging is automatically safe. A cool, ventilated room may dry one device sooner than a humid room dries another, and moisture can remain hidden around contacts. Samsung’s consistent requirement is complete dryness.
When to stop troubleshooting and get service
Contact Samsung support or visit a Samsung service center if the alert persists after the port has had adequate time to dry, a restart, and the available USBSettings cache procedure. Service is also appropriate when:
- the phone will not charge with a dry, undamaged cable after the warning clears;
- the USB port looks bent, corroded, discolored, or physically loose;
- the phone was exposed to salt water, sugary liquid, chemicals, or heavy contamination;
- the device becomes unusually hot, shuts down unexpectedly, or shows other damage after liquid exposure; or
- wireless charging is unavailable and the battery is running out.
Tell support the Galaxy model, software version, type of liquid exposure, whether the warning appears immediately or only when a cable is inserted, and which drying and cache steps you completed. That information helps the technician distinguish a sensor state from connector or board damage. If you still have the cable involved, mention whether its plug showed moisture or corrosion.
Samsung’s support and service channels are preferable to unofficial repair instructions because the correct inspection depends on the exact model. Do not keep charging attempts going while waiting for an appointment; preserve the device in a dry, ventilated condition.

Why the exact Galaxy model matters
Samsung uses the same water-drop symptom across many Galaxy generations, but charging hardware, wireless-charging support, menu labels, and software behavior differ. The USBSettings entry may be named differently or hidden on some releases. Wireless charging is limited to certain models, and the phone’s water-resistance rating does not establish that its port can be charged while damp.
For a precise menu path or charging option, identify the model in Settings → About phone and check the support instructions for that model and its current software. Do not apply a procedure that requires a menu your phone does not show. Carrier software and regional firmware can also change the wording of system-app screens, so a missing USBSettings entry is not evidence that the phone lacks a moisture sensor.

Common questions
Why does my device display a water drop icon and refuse to charge?
The icon indicates that the phone has detected moisture or conductive residue in the USB port, cable, or surrounding connector area. Unplug the cable, dry the phone and plug, and wait for complete evaporation before testing again.
Why won’t the water-drop icon go away even when the port looks dry?
Humidity, hidden moisture, residue, a damp cable, or a stale software state can all keep the warning visible. Restart the phone after drying, then clear the USBSettings cache if that system app is available on your model. If the alert returns with a known-good dry cable, seek Samsung service.
Can I charge through USB if I tap an override?
Samsung does not provide a supported override. Do not use hidden-menu commands, unfamiliar apps, or accessories advertised as bypasses. They can remove a warning without making the connector safe.
Does wireless charging turn off moisture detection?
No. It is a separate, temporary charging method for models that support it. The USB port must still be completely dry before a cable is connected.
How many times should I shake the phone?
Samsung Philippines advises five to 10 gentle shakes with the port pointing downward. The movement should be light; forceful shaking is not a safer or faster method.
Is there a guaranteed drying time?
No. Samsung’s current US guidance does not set one universal time. An older Samsung Malaysia page mentions approximately one to two hours, but airflow and humidity vary, so test only when the port and plug are completely dry.

Why is the warning still showing after drying?
Humidity, hidden moisture, residue, a damp cable, or a stale software state can keep it visible. Use a dry known-good cable only after restarting and completing the available cache procedure.
Can I use wireless charging while waiting?
Only if the exact Galaxy model supports wireless charging. It can provide temporary power, but it does not disable USB moisture detection.
How long should I wait?
There is no universal Samsung-US wait time. An older Samsung Malaysia instruction mentions about one to two hours, but the port and cable should be judged completely dry rather than by a timer.
When should I contact Samsung?
Contact Samsung support or a service center if the warning persists after drying, restarting, and the available USBSettings cache step, or if the port is damaged or the phone still will not charge.
The Bottom Line
