If your Samsung Galaxy sends ordinary texts but not pictures or group messages, check cellular data, your carrier’s MMS service and APN, then the messaging app and SIM. Start with the reversible checks below; carrier-side account or provisioning issues may need your carrier to fix them.
First, identify what is failing
SMS, MMS and RCS are different messaging services. A text-only SMS can work even when MMS fails because picture and some group messages rely on carrier data, a correctly configured APN, and MMS support on your account. RCS uses a separate messaging system and can have its own connection or app-transition issues.
Notice whether the problem affects every picture or group message, only one recipient, or began after a change such as switching carriers, replacing a SIM, changing messaging apps, or updating software. This helps narrow the checks without changing settings unnecessarily.

- Confirm your carrier service is active. Check that the account is in good standing, the plan supports MMS, and any required balance or credit is available. If those look correct, ask the carrier about an outage or MMS provisioning issue. Samsung and Google list carrier service, plan, and account checks among the troubleshooting steps: Samsung US support and Google Messages Help.
- Check cellular connection. Turn off Airplane mode, confirm you have cellular signal, and turn on mobile data. If Wi-Fi is connected, temporarily switch it off to check the mobile-data connection. Wi-Fi alone is not guaranteed to carry carrier MMS; Telstra’s Australia-specific Galaxy S24 instructions also require mobile data for picture messaging: Telstra’s guide.
- Restart the phone after checking the connection, then try sending the message again.
Reset or verify the carrier APN
The Access Point Name (APN) connects your phone to carrier data services, and an incorrect APN can disrupt MMS even when ordinary texts work. Google recommends restoring APN settings to their default. On Samsung phones, the path and available controls vary by model, software and carrier; a common route is Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Access Point Names. Use the reset-to-default option if available, or follow your carrier’s current instructions for its APN values.

Do not copy APN values from another country or carrier. Samsung Korea’s instructions describe how a SIM from another carrier may require that carrier’s APN for internet and MMS, but those values are not universal: Samsung Korea’s APN and SIM guidance. If the settings are missing or you are unsure which values apply, ask your carrier rather than guessing.
Check the messaging app and its settings
- Confirm the intended app is the default and up to date. If picture messages stopped working after a software update or app change, try selecting the messaging app you want to use as the default. Samsung notes that changing the default messaging app may restore functionality after an update: Samsung US troubleshooting.
- Clear the correct app’s cache. Open Settings → Apps, select the Messages app you actually use, then open Storage and tap Clear cache. Samsung phones may have more than one messaging app installed, so check the app name before clearing anything. Prefer clearing cache to clearing app data; clearing data is a different, potentially disruptive step.
- For Google Messages group replies, check Group messaging. Open Google Messages, then go to Profile picture or initial → Messages settings → Advanced → Group messaging. Choose Send an MMS reply to all recipients (group MMS) to keep replies in one group conversation. The alternative mass-text option sends SMS messages and produces individual replies. Google’s instructions apply specifically to Google Messages; labels can change between versions. See Google Messages Help.
- If you changed messaging platforms, check the transition settings. If you recently moved from iPhone, deregister iMessage. If you switched Android messaging apps, Google says RCS may need to be turned off to resolve transition problems. These steps address messages that may still be routed through the previous service; they do not replace the MMS and data checks above.
Check the SIM and recent carrier changes
If your Galaxy has a removable SIM, power down the phone, remove and inspect the SIM, then reinstall it securely and restart. Do not force the tray or handle a damaged SIM. Samsung Korea recommends reseating the USIM in its regional troubleshooting guidance: Samsung Korea support.

If MMS stopped after moving the same phone to a new carrier, contact that carrier. The SIM may need testing or replacement, or the carrier may need to reprogram or provision service for the device. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance discusses carrier help for service changes: Samsung US support.
Isolate a recipient or travel issue
If only one person cannot receive your picture
Try sending an MMS to another number. If that works, the issue may be at the receiving end or specific to that recipient rather than your phone’s general MMS setup. Telstra recommends testing another number in its Australia-specific Galaxy S24 guide: Telstra support.

If MMS fails while you are abroad
Some carriers require data roaming for MMS outside the home network. Telstra’s guide for Australian customers using a Galaxy S24 on Android 14 says to enable data roaming while abroad. That instruction is not universal: roaming support, settings and charges depend on your carrier, plan and destination. Confirm the requirements and costs with your carrier before enabling roaming.

Contact the carrier if the account and connection appear active but MMS still fails, especially after a carrier change, SIM replacement, APN reset or suspected outage. Ask it to verify MMS support on your plan, account restrictions, SIM status, APN instructions and MMS provisioning. These are carrier-controlled issues that changing phone settings may not resolve.

A factory reset is not an early MMS fix. Try the targeted checks and carrier support first. If Samsung’s later troubleshooting steps lead you to consider a reset, back up your data beforehand; its guidance also says to contact the carrier if network problems remain afterward: Samsung US extended troubleshooting.
