To clean a Samsung phone microphone, power the phone off, remove its case or film, and gently clear visible debris from the exterior without poking the opening. Avoid liquids, sharp objects, compressed air, and heat. If the phone is wet, pat it dry and let it air-dry. Then test with a short recording; if the sound is still poor, use Samsung diagnostics or seek service.
Find the microphone opening before cleaning
Many Galaxy phones have a microphone opening along the bottom edge, but its position and layout vary by model. Check the guide for your exact device before cleaning; do not assume every small opening is a microphone. Remove the case and any protective film that could cover the opening, then inspect the exterior for visible obstruction.
Clean the opening without pushing debris inside
- Power off the phone. This reduces the chance of accidental operation while you clean.
- Remove external obstructions. Take off the case and check that a film or accessory is not covering the microphone.
- Clean gently from the outside. Use a clean, soft cloth for the phone’s surface. If you use a soft-bristled brush, keep it at the opening’s exterior and apply minimal pressure; do not insert it into the microphone.
- Keep tools and moisture out. Do not use liquids, sharp picks, or forceful pressure, and do not try to dig debris out of the opening.
Samsung’s regional instructions differ on compressed air. Samsung India’s support page, dated November 19, 2025, includes compressed air among its cleaning suggestions, while Samsung US warns against it: “Avoid using cans of compressed air when drying or cleaning your device, as these may cause damage.” Because the advice is not consistent across regions, avoid compressed air as a general method and follow support instructions for your model and country.
If the microphone or phone is wet
Moisture in a microphone can make the other party’s call audio quieter. Pat the microphone, earpiece, and speaker dry with a clean, soft cloth, then let the phone air-dry before making a call. Do not use external heat.

Do not rinse every Galaxy phone. Samsung’s rinse guidance applies only to water-resistant models exposed to dirty water or certain liquids: for those devices, Samsung specifies rinsing with clean water for 1 to 3 minutes and drying completely. Non-water-resistant phones need different handling; power one off and seek inspection promptly after liquid exposure. Check the instructions for the exact model and exposure before taking any action beyond gently drying the exterior. See Samsung’s water-exposure guidance.
Test the microphone and troubleshoot poor sound
After cleaning, make a short recording in Voice Recorder or Camera and play it back. A clear recording suggests the microphone is working normally; if calls still sound poor, an accessory or app may be affecting them.

- Remove accessories and disconnect or disable Bluetooth devices.
- Restart the phone.
- Record and play a short clip in Voice Recorder or Camera.
- Install available app and device software updates. If the problem began after installing an app, use Safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is involved.
- Run a microphone test in Samsung Members, if available for your device.
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance is available at Microphone issues with a Galaxy phone or tablet. If the recording remains muffled or diagnostics report a problem, contact Samsung support or a service center rather than probing the microphone opening.
