A Samsung Galaxy phone can fail to send messages because of carrier service or signal problems, an app issue, or a SIM problem. If only picture or group messages fail, check MMS and mobile data settings; if only chat messages fail, check RCS separately. First identify which message type is affected and whether the problem occurs with every recipient.
Identify what is failing before changing settings
“Messages won’t send” can describe different services. Note the type of message, who you are trying to reach, and any error or stuck status shown in the app. Samsung’s guidance distinguishes general message failures from issues tied to the network, app, or SIM; Google also recommends checking carrier support for the message type.
- SMS: A basic text fails to one or more recipients.
- MMS: Picture messages or group messages fail, while ordinary texts may work. MMS can depend on mobile data and carrier APN settings.
- RCS: Chat features fail while SMS may still work. RCS has separate carrier, SIM-recognition, and connectivity requirements.
Also check whether the problem affects all contacts or just one, happens only in one location, or began after a carrier, SIM, app, or software change. These clues help narrow the cause, but none alone confirms a diagnosis.

Check carrier service and signal first
Samsung’s U.S. support guidance identifies carrier service as a common cause of messages that do not send or arrive. Confirm that your line is active and your account is in good standing, then check for usable signal and retry somewhere with reliable coverage. If service is suspended or there is a carrier outage, changing phone settings will not restore messaging. Restart the phone and check the messaging app
- Restart the Galaxy phone. After it reconnects to the network, try sending a short text again.
- Confirm which Messages app you are using. If you have more than one messaging app, make sure the intended app is selected as the default for SMS. The exact setting path and labels vary by Android and One UI version.
- Check for an app update. Samsung notes that an app may not be compatible with current software and recommends checking for updates.
- Clear the messaging app cache. Open the phone’s app settings, select the relevant Messages app, and use its storage options to clear the cache. Menu names differ by software version; clearing cache is a low-impact check, not a guaranteed fix.
Samsung’s text-message troubleshooting steps cover app and connection checks. If the error occurs only in one app, that makes an app-specific problem more plausible, but carrier service should still be considered.
Inspect the SIM if messages still fail
A SIM that is not seated correctly or is damaged can interfere with messaging. Turn the phone off before removing or reseating the SIM, and follow the instructions for your device. Do not open or attempt to repair the phone. Google’s Google Messages troubleshooting guidance also advises checking that the SIM is inserted properly.

If reseating the SIM changes nothing, ask your carrier to check that the SIM and line are activated correctly and whether the SIM needs replacement. A carrier can also check whether the account is provisioned for the affected message service.
If picture or group messages fail, check MMS conditions
When ordinary SMS works but picture or group messages do not, focus on MMS rather than assuming all texting is broken. Confirm that mobile data is available, then check the APN configuration with your carrier. APN values differ among carriers and regions, so use only the settings your carrier provides.

Samsung Korea’s MMS troubleshooting instructions identify network conditions and data-network/APN settings as possible causes, and include restoring APN defaults, reseating the USIM, and restarting among the checks. Because carrier configurations vary, do not enter guessed APN values or reset settings without checking whether that is appropriate for your carrier.
If only RCS or chat messages fail
If SMS sends but RCS chat does not, troubleshoot RCS availability and connectivity separately. Check whether your carrier supports the message type and whether the phone recognizes the SIM and has a data connection. Samsung Korea’s Chat+ RCS guidance describes SIM recognition and connectivity requirements; Google’s Google Messages help recommends checking carrier support. A failure limited to RCS does not establish that SMS is broken.

When to contact the carrier or Samsung
- Contact your carrier if your account or service may be inactive, coverage is poor, an outage is possible, MMS or RCS support is unclear, or the SIM may need activation or replacement. Ask the carrier to check messaging service and the correct APN details for your line.
- Contact Samsung support if the carrier confirms that service, coverage, and SIM provisioning are in order and the problem appears limited to the phone or messaging app. Samsung’s support pages can help you match troubleshooting steps to your device and software.
There is no single setting that can be identified as the fix from the symptom alone. Use the message type and scope of the failure to decide which checks to make, and escalate with the error message and the steps already tried.
