Samsung Keyboard’s predictive text shows word suggestions as you type. On current Samsung US instructions, open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Predictive text and switch it on or off for the input language you want. You can also open Samsung Keyboard settings from the keyboard’s settings icon. Menu names and locations vary by software version and region.
Turn predictive text on or off

Open Settings on your Galaxy device.

Tap General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Predictive text.

Switch predictive text on or off for the language you want to use.

If the keyboard is open, tap its settings icon to reach Samsung Keyboard settings. Depending on the device and software, the setting may instead appear under Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing, Language and input > Samsung Keyboard > Predictive text, or General management > Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Predictive text. These are alternate paths, not a universal menu map; some older devices or operating systems may not include every option. Samsung’s US instructions and UK instructions describe the setting and its variations.

What predictive text does—and what it does not do
Predictive text offers possible words while you type; it does not, by itself, mean the keyboard will automatically replace what you entered. Samsung describes the feature as suggesting words as you type. Other typing controls have different actions:

|---|---|---|
| Predictive text | Displays word suggestions while you type. | You choose whether to tap a suggestion. |
| Auto replace | Completes or replaces the current word with a likely word. | The selected word can be inserted using the spacebar or Enter key. |
| Auto spell check | Underlines misspelled words and suggests likely corrections. | It flags spelling and offers corrections rather than serving as the predictive-text toggle. |
Auto capitalization, spacing, and punctuation are also separate controls. You can adjust them independently in Samsung Keyboard settings; changing one does not make the others equivalent.

Manage words Samsung Keyboard has learned
Samsung Keyboard can learn words and phrases you use frequently and may prioritize them in its suggestions. Samsung says a new word is saved as learned when, after typing it for the first time, you tap the spacebar. If an unwanted learned word later appears in the suggestion bar, remove just that suggestion:

Touch and hold the unwanted suggestion in the bar above the keyboard.

Confirm that you want to remove it when prompted.
To clear personalization more broadly, look in Samsung Keyboard settings for Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions. Depending on software and locale, the wording may instead refer to clearing personalized data. Samsung’s US support page and UK support page describe these cleanup options.
Create a text shortcut
A text shortcut is a short trigger that makes a longer saved phrase available in the predictive bar. To add one:

Tap +, enter the shortcut and the expanded phrase, then add it.

Type the shortcut in a message or other text field. When the expanded phrase appears in the predictive bar, tap it to insert it.
If suggestions are missing or the setting is unavailable

Check the selected language: In Samsung Keyboard settings, open Predictive text and confirm it is enabled for the input language you are typing in. The control may be language-specific.

Expect menu differences: Samsung notes that menu paths vary, and some options may not exist on older devices or operating systems. Search within the Samsung Keyboard settings for the relevant typing control if the listed path does not match your menus.

For Japanese input on Android 16 or later: Samsung Japan’s guidance, updated 17 September 2026, says predictive text for Japanese cannot be turned off on those versions. This caveat applies to Japanese input, not all Galaxy users or languages. See Samsung Japan’s guidance.

For a One UI 8 case: In a Samsung Community thread created 28 November 2025, a moderator suggested enabling the preferred language under Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Predictive text so its language pack would download. This is a suggestion in response to a reported case, not a universal fix. See the community thread.
