If your Galaxy keyboard keeps changing language, switching to a floating or split layout, or forgetting your choices, work through the controls in this order: verify Samsung Keyboard is the default, correct Languages and types, restore the normal keyboard mode, disable swipe-based language switching, restart and optimize the phone, then clear cache. Clear Samsung Keyboard data only as a last resort, update One UI and keyboard software, and use Safe mode if a third-party app is interfering.
Identify which setting actually changed
“The keyboard changed” can describe several independent settings. Samsung Keyboard stores language and layout choices separately from its size or position mode, while the phone’s default-keyboard selector determines which keyboard app appears at all. Matching the symptom to the right control avoids resetting everything unnecessarily.

These branches can occur together. For example, selecting a different default keyboard can look like a layout reset, while a spacebar swipe can be mistaken for a language setting that “will not stay.”

1. Make Samsung Keyboard the default
Start here when another keyboard appears, when the problem affects every app, or when the selected keyboard changes after a restart. Samsung Support says, “We recommend using the Samsung Keyboard that comes preinstalled on your device.” Its troubleshooting guidance also notes that third-party keyboard apps may cause problems.

- Tap General management.
- Open Keyboard list and default.
- Tap Default keyboard.
- Select Samsung Keyboard.
Some Galaxy models and software releases put the same controls under Language and input or On-screen keyboard. If the labels do not match, use the Settings search field for Samsung Keyboard, default keyboard, or keyboard list. Leave other keyboards installed only if you deliberately use them; otherwise, review recently installed keyboard, overlay, automation, or customization apps after completing the basic checks.
2. Correct the language and layout
Use this branch when the wrong letters, symbols, autocorrect language, or keyboard arrangement appears. It changes the language configuration, not the keyboard’s physical size or position.
- Open Settings and search for Samsung Keyboard, or open the keyboard settings from any text field by tapping the keyboard’s settings icon.
- Tap Languages and types. Older Galaxy screens may use Input languages or a closely related label.
- Select the affected language.
- Choose the intended layout, such as QWERTY, and confirm the selection.
- Review the language list. Remove languages you never use, or move the intended language higher if the wrong one is being selected.
Do not assume that changing the phone’s system language changes every Samsung Keyboard choice. The keyboard can retain several input languages and a separate layout for each. Check the language currently shown on the keyboard before editing the list. If only one app shows the wrong arrangement, test another text field; an app-specific text field or a different keyboard provider may be responsible rather than the Samsung Keyboard language list.

A sudden change in size or position usually means Samsung Keyboard switched modes. Samsung documents one-handed, floating, split, and normal/full modes, with choices that can vary by screen orientation.
- Open a text field so Samsung Keyboard is visible.
- Tap the keyboard toolbar’s More options button (often shown as three dots), then open Modes or Keyboard mode. You can also search Settings for keyboard mode.
- Choose the normal or full keyboard for the current orientation.
- If the keyboard is split, turn off split mode. If it is floating, switch back to the full or standard mode; for a narrow one-handed layout, disable one-handed mode.
- Rotate the phone once and check the mode again, because some Galaxy versions retain separate behavior for portrait and landscape.
This setting does not change your installed languages. If the letters are wrong as well as the size, complete the Languages and types check separately.

4. Stop accidental language changes from a spacebar swipe
Samsung Keyboard can use a swipe across the spacebar to change input language. A brief, unintended gesture can therefore make the keyboard appear to “forget” the selected language.
- Open Samsung Keyboard settings.
- Tap Smart input.
- Find the option for changing the input language by swiping on the spacebar and turn it off.
- Return to a text field and use the language button on the keyboard when you need to change languages.
Samsung’s Korean service guidance documents selecting a language button instead of relying on the swipe. The wording and location of this control vary by Galaxy model, One UI/Android release, Samsung Keyboard version, language, and region. If you cannot find the exact label, search Settings for swipe language, spacebar, or input language.
5. Restart and run Device Care optimization
After correcting the settings, perform a clean restart before escalating to app-storage changes. Samsung says a restart can resolve minor bugs and temporary software issues.
- Close open apps, especially any app that displays overlays or alternative keyboards.
- Open Settings > Device care and tap Optimize now when that option is available.
- Restart the Galaxy phone using the Power menu.
- Open a text field after the reboot and test the same language, layout, and orientation that previously failed.
Device Care’s exact screen and the Optimize now button are not present on every model or software release. The restart remains useful even when Device Care is unavailable.
6. Clear Samsung Keyboard’s cache
Use cache clearing when the correct settings are selected but the keyboard behaves as though old or damaged temporary files are still being used. This is a lower-impact step than deleting the app’s data.

- Open Settings > Apps.
- Find Samsung Keyboard. If it is not listed, use the Apps screen’s system-app filter or search for the name directly.
- Tap Storage.
- Choose Clear cache.
- Return to a text field and test the keyboard. Restart once more if the old behavior remains.
Cache removal targets temporary files. It does not intentionally erase your saved language list or layout choices, although you should still verify the settings afterward because menu behavior differs by software version.

7. Clear app data only after recording your preferences
If the default keyboard, language, mode, restart, and cache checks do not help, clearing Samsung Keyboard data can rebuild its local configuration. It is more disruptive than clearing cache: removing app data may erase saved keyboard preferences, including preferred languages, layouts, and other custom settings.
- Before deleting anything, write down or photograph the languages, language order, layout, keyboard mode, and Smart input choices you want to restore.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Samsung Keyboard > Storage. Use the system-app filter if necessary.
- Tap Clear data and confirm the warning.
- Open a text field and select Samsung Keyboard again if Android asks you to choose a keyboard.
- Re-add the required languages, select the intended layout, restore normal/full mode, and configure Smart input.
- Restart the phone and test typing in more than one app.
Do not use Clear data as the first response to a one-handed, floating, or split keyboard; those symptoms normally have a direct mode switch. Likewise, data deletion cannot fix a third-party keyboard that remains selected as the default.
8. Install available Galaxy and keyboard updates
Software changes can alter menu names, available layouts, and how Samsung Keyboard settings are stored. Check for pending phone software and Samsung Keyboard updates after the basic troubleshooting steps.
- Open Settings > Software update and install any available Galaxy update according to the on-screen instructions.
- Check the device’s app-update screen for a Samsung Keyboard update when your model exposes one.
- Restart after installation.
- Recheck Default keyboard, Languages and types, Keyboard mode, and Smart input, because an update can change labels or reset an option.
The US and Canadian Samsung support pages describe current Galaxy settings in English, but a specific phone may show different wording. One UI and Android versions, keyboard app versions, language packs, and regional firmware all affect the available controls.

9. Use Safe mode to find third-party interference
Safe mode temporarily starts the phone without third-party apps. It is the appropriate diagnostic when the keyboard works normally in Samsung’s own environment but changes after installing or updating another app.
- Open the Power menu.
- Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode prompt appears, then confirm. On some Galaxy versions, the route uses the hardware keys while the phone is starting; follow the model’s on-screen instructions.
- Type in several apps and test the language, layout, mode, and spacebar behavior.
- If the problem disappears, restart normally and review apps installed or updated shortly before the issue began. Prioritize alternative keyboard apps, screen overlays, automation tools, launchers, and customization utilities.
- Remove or disable one suspect app at a time, restart, and retest so you can identify the conflict.
If the same behavior occurs in Safe mode, a third-party app is less likely to be the cause. Continue with the Samsung Keyboard settings, cache/data, and software-version checks instead of repeatedly uninstalling unrelated apps.
Choose the least disruptive fix first
The following order limits how much of your configuration you disturb while still covering Samsung’s documented troubleshooting branches.

Practical symptom-based fixes
The keyboard switches between two languages while I type
First check the language list and order under Languages and types. Then disable Smart input’s spacebar-swipe language change and use the on-keyboard language button. If another keyboard appears after switching apps, verify the system default before changing Samsung Keyboard preferences.

Open the mode selector and choose normal/full mode for the current orientation. Rotate the phone and test again. Do not clear app data unless the mode control will not hold after a restart and cache check.

The layout is wrong only in landscape
Samsung documents mode behavior by screen orientation on some models. Set the normal/full mode while the phone is in the affected orientation, then verify the language’s layout separately. A landscape-only issue does not by itself prove that the language list was reset.
Another keyboard keeps taking over
Set Samsung Keyboard under Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default > Default keyboard. If the selection changes back, use Safe mode to test whether a recently installed keyboard or system-overlay app is forcing the change.
The keyboard forgets everything after a reboot
Record the desired configuration, check for Galaxy and Samsung Keyboard updates, clear cache, and test again. If settings still vanish, clear Samsung Keyboard data once and rebuild the configuration. Persistent loss after that points toward a software-version or app conflict that should be documented with the exact Galaxy model, One UI/Android version, and affected languages when contacting Samsung support.

Samsung’s exact paths are not universal. Model generation, One UI and Android release, Samsung Keyboard app version, selected language, and regional firmware can change the wording or hide a control. “General management” may be labeled “Language and input”; “Languages and types” may appear as “Input languages”; and the mode selector may be located in the keyboard toolbar rather than the main Settings screen.
- Use Settings search for Samsung Keyboard when a documented path is missing.
- Search for default keyboard to reach the provider selector directly.
- Search for spacebar, swipe language, or input language for the Smart input control.
- Check both portrait and landscape before deciding that a mode setting failed.
- Read the confirmation text before clearing cache or data; the labels identify whether temporary files or all app information will be removed.
When the documented fixes do not hold
Keep a short record of the exact symptom: which app was open, which language and orientation were active, whether the keyboard provider changed, and whether Safe mode changed the behavior. Note the Galaxy model, One UI/Android version, Samsung Keyboard version if shown, and the date the problem started. This separates a reproducible Samsung Keyboard fault from an app-specific or third-party conflict and gives support a useful sequence to reproduce.
The documented fixes do not require a case, Bluetooth keyboard, replacement part, cleaning product, or other hardware accessory. Avoid buying hardware to solve a software setting that can be corrected in the keyboard or system menus.
