If your Samsung Galaxy restarts unexpectedly, first check whether an automatic restart or security update explains it. Next, test in Safe mode to see whether a downloaded app is involved, then check the Power/Side button, charging, and software updates. If the phone keeps restarting in Safe mode or cannot reach the lock screen, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center rather than repeatedly resetting it.
Why does your Samsung keep restarting?
The timing and pattern help narrow the cause. A restart at a regular time may be scheduled; one that began after installing an app may involve that app. A restart during a security update may be intentional. Reboots that continue in Safe mode, or a phone that cannot get past the startup screen, need a different response.
- Regular or idle-time restart: Check Auto restart and Auto optimisation settings.
- Started after adding or updating an app: Use Safe mode to test whether downloaded software is involved.
- Started during a system update: Allow the update to finish if the phone remains responsive; repeated restarts or a boot loop call for Samsung’s boot-loop guidance.
- Power button feels stuck, or the phone is damaged: Remove anything pressing the button and seek service if the problem remains.
- Restarts continue in Safe mode: A hardware issue becomes more likely; arrange professional inspection.
Menu names and availability differ by model, software version, and location. If a path below does not match your phone, search Settings for the named feature. Samsung’s restart guidance describes automatic restarts and regional security-update behavior.
How to troubleshoot a Galaxy that reboots repeatedly
1. Check for an automatic restart setting
Open Settings > Device care or Battery and device care, then look under Auto optimisation > Auto restart. Turn off a scheduled restart or “Restart when needed” only if its timing matches the unwanted reboots. Samsung notes that automatic restart generally runs while the device is idle, the screen is off, and—under the cited Samsung India guidance—the battery is at least 30%. That threshold describes the feature’s operating condition, not a general battery-health rule. Even with these options disabled, a system restart may still occur depending on device condition.

2. Consider whether a security update triggered it
Samsung says that, depending on country or region, an emergency security update may restart a device automatically even when automatic software downloads are turned off. This is one possible explanation, not a reason to assume every unexpected reboot is an update. The regional qualification is described in Samsung India’s guidance, updated August 18, 2026.
3. Test in Safe mode for downloaded apps
Safe mode starts the phone with core software and disables downloaded apps. On supported recent Galaxy devices, open the power menu by holding the Side and Volume down buttons; touch and hold Power off, then select Safe mode. The exact method can vary, so consult Samsung’s instructions for your model if those controls do not work.
Use the phone in Safe mode long enough to see whether the restart pattern recurs. If it stops, uninstall recently added or updated apps one at a time, restarting normally and observing the result after each removal. If the phone still restarts in Safe mode, a downloaded app is less likely to be responsible. Samsung explains this distinction in its unexpected power-off troubleshooting guide and boot-loop guide.

4. Install an available software update if you can reach Settings
If the phone reaches Settings, open Settings > Software update and follow the prompts to install an available update over a reliable connection. Do not interrupt an update that is progressing. If the phone repeatedly restarts during an update or never reaches the lock screen, use Samsung’s boot-loop instructions; that guidance also describes Smart Switch as another update route when available.
5. Rule out a pressed button or a discharged phone
Remove the case or accessories temporarily in case they press or obstruct the Power/Side button. A button that feels jammed or unusually soft can be associated with unexpected shutdowns. If the phone may simply be discharged, connect a Samsung-certified charger and cable and allow it time to charge; a blank display alone does not prove charging has failed. Charging is a check for a possible low-battery condition, not a general fix for random restarts. See Samsung’s button and battery troubleshooting guidance.

When does a restart problem need Samsung service?
Contact Samsung support or an authorized service center if the phone continues restarting in Safe mode, has physical damage, or shows signs of a defective battery. If it cannot reach the lock screen or is stuck restarting during startup or an update, follow the boot-loop guidance or contact support instead of trying steps that require access to Settings. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says persistent restarts in Safe mode make a hardware issue more likely.
Do not open the phone or attempt a battery replacement based on a general troubleshooting guide. A service professional can assess the device and advise on model-appropriate next steps.
Should you factory-reset a Samsung phone that keeps restarting?
A factory data reset is a last resort, not an early diagnostic step. Samsung warns that it erases personal data. Before resetting, back up what you can, make sure you know the Google and Samsung account credentials needed afterward, and decrypt an encrypted SD card if applicable. Follow the reset instructions for your model in Samsung’s unexpected power-off guide.
After the reset, test the phone before restoring apps. If the restarts return only after reinstalling a particular app, that app may be involved. If the issue persists on a clean setup, stop troubleshooting and seek service.
