Samsung is evaluating additional display-driver IC (DDI) suppliers for future Galaxy phones and Samsung Display products. The reported plan is selective dual-sourcing to improve capacity resilience and control component costs—not evidence that Samsung System LSI is being dropped. TrendForce’s August 2026 account says Samsung Display sought quotations from Taiwan’s Novatek and other vendors for the 2028 Galaxy S28 Ultra, while Samsung Electronics’ Mobile eXperience (MX) division will choose the final supplier. Those are reported evaluations, not confirmed production awards.

What Samsung is reportedly changing

Display-driver chips are a component where Samsung has historically relied heavily on its in-house System LSI business, but recent reports describe a broader qualification effort across several product tiers.

Galaxy S27 and S28 sourcing

According to TrendForce in August 2026, System LSI had secured exclusive DDI supply for some Galaxy S27 Ultra and S27 Pro variants. Suppliers for the standard and Plus models were still being evaluated. The same report says Samsung Display requested quotations from Novatek and other suppliers for the Galaxy S28 Ultra, expected in 2028. Samsung Electronics’ MX division, rather than Samsung Display alone, is expected to make the final phone-supplier decision.

Model assignments can change before mass production. A request for quotation shows that Samsung is testing commercial and technical alternatives; it does not establish that Novatek or any other outside company has won the S28 Ultra contract.

A separate foundry-capacity report

A 2026 secondary report citing ZDNet Korea said Samsung was considering GlobalFoundries alongside UMC for additional DDI capacity, potentially for entry-level Galaxy A-series phones by the end of 2027. That account is less firmly established than the TrendForce report, and neither qualification nor an award has been confirmed.

Why Samsung wants more than one source

Capacity resilience

DDIs are made through semiconductor foundries, so a full production line or a constrained wafer allocation can affect phone assembly even when display-panel demand is strong. The GlobalFoundries/UMC report specifically attributes Samsung’s search for another source to capacity constraints. A qualified second source gives Samsung another allocation when its primary supplier or foundry cannot provide enough wafers.

Rising component costs

TrendForce linked the Galaxy review to profitability pressure in the MX division, including higher memory costs. Omdia reported that display-driver IC prices were also rising as foundry capacity and upstream manufacturing expenses tightened, citing 5–10% quarter-on-quarter wafer-price increases at several 8-inch foundries in the first quarter of 2026. Negotiating with multiple qualified suppliers can improve Samsung’s leverage, although maintaining two sources also requires engineering and validation spending.

What a display-driver IC does

A DDI converts image data from a phone’s application processor into the electrical signals that address individual pixels. It sits between the processor and the display panel, as described by TechPixa’s Rob Adaro. The chip controls the timing and voltage behavior needed for an OLED or LCD panel to show an image, handle brightness changes and operate at specified refresh rates.

Qualification is therefore a complete system exercise, not simply a test of whether a supplier can fabricate silicon. Samsung must match the DDI to a particular panel design, resolution, timing scheme, refresh-mode range, power envelope, package and manufacturing-yield target. A company listed as a possible supplier may still fail one of those requirements or lose on cost.

Suppliers and their reported status

Company Reported role Status and timing
Samsung System LSI In-house Galaxy DDI supplier Reported by TrendForce to retain exclusive supply for some S27 Ultra and Pro variants; other model allocations remain under evaluation.
Novatek Taiwanese DDI supplier Reportedly asked to quote for S28 Ultra; prospective, with no confirmed award.
DB GlobalChip Korean OLED smartphone DDI supplier Named by TrendForce as part of Samsung’s reported supply chain; a specific new Galaxy award was not stated.
Anapass Korean OLED smartphone DDI supplier Named in the same supply-chain account; model-level award not stated.
Wonik D2I Korean OLED smartphone DDI supplier Named in the reported chain; model-level award not stated.
LX Semicon OLED DDI supplier for Samsung Display IT products Mass production was reported to begin in March 2026 for laptop and monitor panels; Seoul Economic Daily described the order as hundreds of thousands of units.
UMC Potential foundry or additional DDI source Discussed in the capacity report; Samsung’s search for another source was attributed to limits on available capacity.
GlobalFoundries Potential additional DDI source Considered for possible entry-level Galaxy A-series use by the end of 2027 in a secondary report; qualification and award remain unconfirmed.

Samsung Display’s IT-panel deal is the clearest dated expansion

The most concrete timing in the reports concerns Samsung Display rather than a Galaxy phone. Samsung Display agreed with LX Semicon on OLED DDIs for information-technology products such as laptops and monitors, with mass production reported from March 2026. The described volume—hundreds of thousands of units—indicates a meaningful production program, but it does not reveal a comparable phone allocation.

This distinction matters because display DDIs are highly application-specific. A chip qualified for an IT OLED panel may not meet the resolution, refresh-rate, package or power requirements of a particular smartphone panel without additional design work.

Is Samsung replacing System LSI?

Nothing in the reported plans proves a withdrawal from System LSI. The S27 account instead places System LSI in an exclusive position for selected premium variants while Samsung evaluates alternatives for other models and future generations. That pattern is consistent with controlled dual-sourcing: keep an incumbent where its design and yield are proven, and qualify additional suppliers where capacity, cost or product segmentation justify the effort.

Samsung Semiconductor’s official display-IC portfolio lists panel DDI as a product category, but that portfolio information does not confirm the Galaxy assignments described in trade reports.

How to judge whether a supplier can win a Galaxy design

Supplier comparisons should use the following criteria rather than company size alone:

  • Panel and model qualification: Demonstrated compatibility with the exact OLED or LCD panel, resolution and timing architecture.
  • Capacity and second-source resilience: Reliable wafer allocation during periods of foundry congestion.
  • Total cost: Wafer pricing, packaging, testing and expected yield, not only the quoted chip price.
  • Process and power behavior: The process node and driver efficiency must fit the phone’s thermal and battery targets.
  • Display features: Support for the required refresh-rate modes, brightness control and panel interface.
  • Geographic concentration: Dependence on one country, foundry or packaging route can undermine the benefit of adding a nominal second supplier.

What Galaxy buyers should expect next

Near-term phone specifications will not identify every DDI source. Samsung can change suppliers by model, region or production run, and a DDI is normally invisible in consumer-facing specification sheets. The practical signals to watch are a confirmed Samsung announcement, a final model-level production award, and evidence that a candidate supplier has completed panel qualification.

For the Galaxy S27, the current reports describe a split evaluation across Ultra, Pro, standard and Plus variants rather than one supplier decision for the entire range. For the Galaxy S28, the reported Novatek quotation indicates an early sourcing step for a 2028 product, not a finalized bill of materials. The broader implication is that Samsung is building more optionality into its display-chip supply chain as capacity and wafer costs remain uncertain.
