Yes—Samsung is a significant Android smartphone seller in Japan, but the available figures do not show it as the country’s most popular smartphone brand overall. Samsung Japan says it ranked No. 1 in annual sales quantity in the Android smartphone category at participating retailers in 2025. Separate shipment data for Japan’s fiscal year 2025 put Samsung third among handset makers, behind Apple and Google. Those results measure different things, so neither alone proves how many Japanese consumers prefer Samsung or already own a Samsung phone.
What does “popular” mean in this case?
“Popular” can refer to several different measures: what retailers sell, what manufacturers ship into the market, how many people already use a brand, or what consumers say they prefer. The available Japan figures provide evidence about retail sales and shipments, but not a current, representative survey of Samsung preference or a reliable estimate of its installed base.
- Retail sales: devices sold through the outlets included in a point-of-sale dataset.
- Shipments: devices shipped into the market during a reporting period; this is not the same as a consumer purchase at checkout.
- Installed base: phones people currently use, including devices bought in earlier periods.
- Stated preference: what people report liking or intending to buy in a survey.
Because these measures answer different questions, Samsung’s Android-category award and its total handset shipment share are not contradictory.

Samsung Japan announced that it received the BCN Award 2026 for “No. 1 in annual sales quantity in the Android smartphone category.” The award is based on BCN Ranking point-of-sale data covering sales from January 1 through December 31, 2025, at 2,350 participating major electronics retailers, computer specialty stores, and online shops. Samsung Japan’s award announcement names Galaxy S25 models, Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7, and Galaxy A25 5G among the contributors, but does not publish an individual sales ranking for those models.

This is meaningful evidence that Samsung performed strongly among Android brands in the measured retail channels. It is not a claim that Samsung outsold every smartphone maker in Japan: the award category is Android smartphones, and the data cover participating outlets rather than every point of sale.
Shipment data put Samsung behind Apple and Google
For Japan’s fiscal year 2025, running from April 2025 through March 2026, MM Research Institute figures reported by ITmedia put Samsung at 3.531 million handset shipments and 11.0% of total handset shipments. Apple accounted for 50.1% and Google for 12.4%, placing Samsung third among the three named makers. ITmedia’s report of the FY2025 handset figures describes a broader shipment measure, not the same retail-sales measure as the BCN award.

The denominator matters. Keitai Watch separately reports Apple at 51.6% of smartphone shipments for the same fiscal period, while Samsung’s 11.0% figure is for total handset shipments. Keitai Watch’s report illustrates why percentages with different denominators should not be treated as a direct like-for-like comparison.

What model-level tracking can—and cannot—tell you
Counterpoint’s Japan smartphone sales tracker lists 12 models from Apple, Google, and Samsung, with data through July 2026. Its public listing includes the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy A25, but individual unit volumes and market shares require account access. The public tracker listing therefore confirms that Samsung models appear in its tracked set, but it does not establish their precise sales rank or brand-wide popularity.

Counterpoint’s public Galaxy S25 page reports a 59.7% month-over-month sell-through decline in May 2026. That is a change for one model in one month, not a measure of Samsung’s overall Japan performance; Counterpoint also notes that panel estimates can be revised. The Galaxy S25 Japan sell-through page should be read as model-specific context, not a brand-wide trend.

The most defensible answer is that Samsung is a prominent Android seller with a strong result in a defined retail category, while Apple leads the reported total handset shipment market by a wide margin. Samsung’s 11.0% total handset shipment share puts it behind Apple and Google for FY2025. These figures show Samsung has a meaningful presence, but they do not establish a Japan-wide consumer preference ranking or how many people currently use Samsung phones.

When comparing future claims, check four things before drawing a conclusion: whether the figure is shipments or retail sell-through; whether it covers a calendar or fiscal year; whether the denominator is all handsets or smartphones only; and whether its channel coverage is participating retailers or broader shipment reporting.
