A Samsung ice maker that keeps frosting up usually has warm, moist air getting into the compartment. Check that the refrigerator door closes and seals properly, the ice bucket sits flush against the chute, the dispenser flap closes, and the rear vents are clear. If the ice maker itself is frozen over with a sheet of ice—or frost returns after these checks—Samsung says to arrange service rather than trying to defrost the ice maker.
First identify where the ice is forming
The location and severity determine what to do. Frost on an accessible freezer surface or around the ice bucket may be cleared carefully. A sheet of ice covering the ice maker is different: Samsung says the ice maker has an automatic defrost function and should not be manually defrosted. If that function does not clear it, the unit needs service.

Check for warm air entering the compartment
Samsung identifies warm, moist air entering and freezing as the general cause of frost. Work through these checks before removing accessible frost.
Make sure the refrigerator door closes fully
- Move any food or containers that keep the door from closing.
- Inspect the rubber door seal for dirt, gaps, tears, or splits. Samsung suggests shining a flashlight inside the compartment and closing the door to help spot gaps.
- Clean a dirty seal with warm soapy water and dry it. If the seal has pulled out of its channel, push it back into place; a torn or split seal needs service.
Check the ice bucket and chute
Confirm that the bucket is seated correctly and that its gasket sits flush against the ice chute. A gap can let warm air reach the ice-maker area and create frost.

Inspect the dispenser flap
Look at the black flap inside the ice chute. It should sit flush against its housing. Ice, frost, or debris can hold it open and let warm air in. Samsung’s dispenser guidance says ice around the chute can be cleared with warm water if needed; dry the bucket thoroughly afterward so moisture does not freeze again.
Keep the freezer vents clear
Leave two inches of clearance in front of the vents at the back of the compartment, as recommended by Samsung US Support (accessed 2026). Move food that blocks the vents. If frost has formed on the vents, moving food alone will not restore airflow; clear accessible frost using the safe methods above.

Check whether the freezer is set to overcool
Review the freezer temperature setting and check whether Power Freeze is active. Samsung says Power Freeze makes the freezer as cold as possible and can remain on for up to 72 hours on some models. Turn it off if it is enabled and you do not need it. Controls vary by model; use the instructions for your refrigerator. Samsung also recommends keeping the surrounding environment above 50°F. If the refrigerator is installed somewhere colder, it may overcool. These recommendations come from Samsung’s overcooling guidance (accessed 2026).
If the water line is not connected, turn off the ice maker to prevent damage, as Samsung advises in the same guidance.

Remove only accessible frost safely
- For light frost on an accessible surface, wipe with a damp cloth.
- For a heavier patch on an accessible surface, gently use a plastic scraper.
- Wipe the area and dry it with a second cloth.
Samsung explicitly warns: “Do not use a hair dryer to speed defrosting. This will damage the refrigerator.” These removal steps are for accessible frost, not a frozen-over ice maker.

Contact Samsung support if frost returns after you have checked the door seal, bucket alignment, dispenser flap, airflow, and freezer settings. Request service as well if the ice maker is covered by a sheet of ice; Samsung says not to manually defrost it and recommends service if its automatic defrost function does not work. The exact cause or replacement part cannot be determined without the refrigerator’s model and a diagnosis.
