Choose the Samsung HW-Q990H if you want the most convincing movie and gaming surround effects immediately, because its package includes a subwoofer and wireless rear speakers. Choose the Sonos Arc Ultra if you want a cleaner one-bar installation, place greater weight on music, or plan to build a Sonos system over time. Neither is universally better: your room, HDMI layout, listening habits and local price should decide the purchase.
Samsung HW-Q990H vs. Sonos Arc Ultra at a glance
These products are not equivalent packages. The HW-Q990H is a complete multi-speaker home-theater system; Arc Ultra is a single soundbar that creates spatial effects from drivers in one cabinet. Comparing only the printed channel numbers hides that crucial difference.

The channel and driver figures are manufacturer specifications, not a laboratory ranking. A physical speaker behind you can create a different result from a virtual rear channel generated at the front of the room.

Samsung is a complete theater package
Samsung describes the HW-Q990H as an 11.1.4-channel system made up of a 7.0.2 main bar and 4.0.2 rear speakers. The package also includes a subwoofer. In practical terms, the box contains the hardware needed for bass, side and rear effects, and overhead-style Atmos cues without another product purchase.

The rear units are wireless for audio, but they still need power outlets and a clear position behind or to the sides of the listening area. “Wireless” therefore removes a long signal cable, not every installation constraint. If your sofa is against a wall, a walkway runs directly behind it, or there is no convenient outlet, the included speakers may be difficult to use properly.
Arc Ultra starts as one bar
Arc Ultra is a single soundbar. Sonos describes it as delivering a 9.1.4 spatial-audio experience, but all of the initial sound comes from the bar’s built-in drivers and processing. You do not get a separate subwoofer or rear channels in the base purchase.
That makes the first installation substantially simpler: place the bar under the television, connect eARC, run room tuning and begin listening. It also means the system’s surround bubble depends more heavily on the room’s walls, ceiling, seating position and the bar’s ability to reflect or steer sound.

Channel labels do not predict identical performance
“11.1.4” and “9.1.4” describe signal-processing or speaker-channel configurations, not a promise that one room will hear exactly those discrete channels. The Samsung bundle has actual rear cabinets and a separate bass enclosure from the start. Arc Ultra’s number describes its spatial processing in a single enclosure. Treat the labels as specifications for each design, not as a direct scorecard.
Movies and games: where Samsung has the clearest advantage
In its July 13, 2026 comparison, What Hi-Fi? reported that the Samsung package produced stronger surround and height effects than Arc Ultra used alone. The review attributed that advantage primarily to the included rear speakers and subwoofer. Explosions, moving objects and ambient effects have more physical locations from which to arrive, while low-frequency effects have a dedicated cabinet rather than relying on the bar.
That advantage matters most with Dolby Atmos films, action games and soundtracks mixed with obvious movement around the listener. A helicopter crossing the screen, rain behind the sofa or a game character approaching from the rear has a better chance of sounding discrete when there are speakers in those positions.

Arc Ultra can still make a wide, elevated presentation from the front of the room. Its result is likely to be most convincing for listeners seated centrally, with side walls and a ceiling that give reflected or processed effects something to work with. The farther your seat is from that intended listening position, or the more open and asymmetrical the room, the less predictable virtual surround becomes.

What Hi-Fi?’s conclusion was use-case based rather than an overall knockout: Samsung for a room that can accommodate a multi-speaker system, and Sonos for the convenience of a single bar. Those are the review’s listening judgments, not independent measurements reproduced here.
Music: why you may prefer Sonos
The same What Hi-Fi? comparison preferred Arc Ultra’s presentation for music, describing it as smoother, richer and more rounded. That preference is subjective, but it identifies a real buying distinction: music often rewards tonal balance, vocal texture and a coherent front image more than maximum rear-channel activity.
Arc Ultra’s Sonos platform also makes everyday listening straightforward. You can use the same app and system for television and music, then add a Sub or Era 300 rear speakers if your priorities change. The trade-off is that a fully expanded Sonos theater costs more than the bar alone and requires additional components.
Samsung’s system is not limited to films. Its larger package and subwoofer can give music more scale and bass impact, particularly for concert recordings and electronic or orchestral material. If your main question is whether a song sounds natural and relaxed rather than whether effects wrap behind you, auditioning both with familiar tracks is more useful than comparing channel counts.

Room space and placement requirements
Plan the Samsung layout before buying
- Measure the wall or furniture under the television for the main bar and confirm that it will not block the screen or remote sensor.
- Identify two stable positions behind or beside the seating area for the rear speakers.
- Check that each rear position has a power outlet and is not inside a walkway where it can be knocked over.
- Leave the subwoofer on the floor with some freedom to move during setup; bass response can change dramatically with placement.
- Keep the main listening seat reasonably centered between the rear speakers for the most even surround field.
Samsung’s 2026 announcement says its Sound Elevation technology “lifts dialogue toward the center of the screen for more natural sounding audio.” That is Samsung’s description of its own feature, not an independent measurement. The system also lists SpaceFit Sound Pro, which is intended to adapt playback to the room.

Arc Ultra is easier in small or open rooms
Sonos lists Arc Ultra at 75 × 1,178 × 110.6 mm and 5.9 kg. Place it under the display with the front unobstructed and connect it to the television’s eARC port. Because there are no rear cabinets in the base package, it suits apartments, open-plan rooms and wall-mounted televisions where floor space behind the sofa is limited.
Trueplay room tuning is available on iOS and Android according to Sonos’ product information. Run it after placing furniture normally, not while holding curtains or moving around the room, and repeat it if you substantially change the layout. Tuning cannot create a physical rear speaker where none exists; it optimizes the bar’s response for the room you have.
HDMI, consoles and format support
Samsung offers more routing flexibility
Samsung’s U.S. page lists HDMI 2.1 inputs and pass-through up to 4K/120 Hz. That can be useful if a game console or gaming PC has to connect through the soundbar while the television has limited high-bandwidth HDMI ports. Verify the exact model suffix and regional specification before purchase, then use certified cables appropriate to your console and display.
A practical connection sequence is:
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI output to the television’s eARC/ARC port.
- Connect a 4K/120 Hz console to a Samsung HDMI input when the television does not have a free compatible port.
- Enable eARC and passthrough or bitstream audio in the television menu, using the labels supplied by your TV manufacturer.
- Set the console to output Dolby Atmos or multichannel PCM only after basic stereo audio is working.
- Play a known Atmos title and confirm that the soundbar reports the expected format.
Arc Ultra needs the television to do the switching
Arc Ultra has an eARC output connection but no HDMI input for pass-through, as noted in the What Hi-Fi? specifications discussion. Connect source devices directly to the television, then send audio from the TV to Arc Ultra over eARC. This is usually fine when the television has enough suitable HDMI ports; it is a limitation when several sources compete for a single high-bandwidth input.
Sonos lists support for stereo PCM, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, multichannel PCM and DTS Digital Surround. Sonos notes that eARC is required for certain formats and says DTS Digital Surround support does not indicate a licensed decoder. Your television may convert or limit an incoming format, so the TV’s audio-output menu matters as much as the bar’s specification.
Dialogue, night listening and room correction
Samsung tools
Samsung lists voice enhancement, SpaceFit Sound Pro, Sound Elevation and Auto Volume. Samsung says Auto Volume maintains consistent volume across channels and content, which can help when advertisements, streaming services or different sources vary sharply in level. Voice enhancement is useful when speech is masked by effects, but increasing it too far can make voices sound less natural.

Sonos tools
Arc Ultra provides Speech Enhancement with four levels, Night Sound and adjustable equalization. Speech Enhancement is preferable to raising the entire volume when you need clearer dialogue; Night Sound is intended to reduce disruptive peaks for people nearby. Trueplay tuning is available for both iOS and Android, according to Sonos’ current product information.
Neither brand’s dialogue mode can repair a badly placed speaker or a television that is sending the wrong audio format. First confirm that the center image is aimed at ear height, the TV is using eARC or ARC correctly, and the source is not downmixing unexpectedly.
Expansion and ecosystem choices
Samsung gives you the full system first
With HW-Q990H, the main expansion decision is largely made at purchase: rear speakers and a subwoofer are already included. That is attractive if you want a finished theater now and do not want to coordinate compatible add-ons later. Samsung also lists Q-Symphony, which is designed to coordinate a compatible Samsung television’s speakers with the soundbar; compatibility depends on the television model.
Sonos lets you stage the spending
Arc Ultra can be paired with a Sonos Sub and Era 300 rear speakers for a fuller surround system. Buying the bar first spreads the cost and lets you test whether the one-bar experience meets your needs. The eventual system will occupy more space and cost more than Arc Ultra alone, so compare the price of the complete configuration—not just the entry bar—if you already know you want rear effects.
An ecosystem preference can outweigh a small sound-quality difference. Choose Sonos when you already use compatible Sonos speakers or value adding rooms one product at a time. Choose Samsung when the priority is a single-box purchase that includes the theater hardware.
Price and availability: use current local listings
Samsung’s U.S. product page listed the HW-Q990H at $1,999.99 when checked in October 2026, but showed “Not Available” for both delivery and in-store pickup at the checked location. That is a dated availability snapshot, not evidence that the product is unavailable everywhere.

Sonos’ U.S. comparison page listed Arc Ultra at $1,099. What Hi-Fi?’s July 2026 comparison referenced a launch price of £999, $999 and AU$1,799, while its UK price at publication had fallen to £1,299 for the Samsung system. Those review-context figures are historical and should not be treated as current quotes.
Before ordering, check the exact regional model, included accessories, warranty, return period and whether a discount applies to the bar alone or to a bundle. Also price the Samsung package against Arc Ultra plus the Sub and rear speakers if you want comparable hardware.
Which one should you buy?
Buy Samsung HW-Q990H when these statements describe you
- You watch films or play games where rear and overhead effects are a top priority.
- You have room behind the seating position for two speakers and nearby power outlets.
- You want a subwoofer included rather than adding one later.
- You need HDMI inputs or 4K/120 Hz pass-through for console routing.
- You prefer to purchase a complete theater package in one transaction.
Buy Sonos Arc Ultra when these statements describe you
- You want one soundbar with minimal installation and no rear-speaker stands or cables.
- Music playback and a smooth, rich presentation matter more than maximum discrete surround.
- Your television has enough HDMI inputs to handle consoles and streaming devices directly.
- You already use Sonos products or want to add a Sub and rear speakers gradually.
- Your room is small, open, asymmetrical or unsuitable for speakers behind the sofa.
Choose neither immediately if your setup is unresolved
- Measure the television wall, seating distance and rear-speaker locations before paying.
- Count available eARC/ARC and 4K/120 Hz HDMI ports on the television.
- Decide whether you need a complete system now or are comfortable budgeting for later Sonos additions.
- Check live local prices and stock; the listed figures above are time- and region-specific.
Setup checklists after purchase
Samsung HW-Q990H checklist
- Place the main bar centered below the display and the subwoofer on the floor.
- Position each rear speaker behind or slightly beside the seating area, aimed toward the listeners and connected to power.
- Connect the bar to the TV’s eARC/ARC port; connect a console to a soundbar HDMI input if pass-through is required.
- Enable the TV’s eARC, passthrough and bitstream options, then verify the console’s video mode and audio format.
- Run Samsung’s room and sound controls, then adjust voice enhancement only if dialogue remains difficult to understand.
- Test a familiar Atmos film and a game from the main seat before moving speakers or changing levels.
Sonos Arc Ultra checklist
- Place Arc Ultra under the display with its front and upward-firing areas unobstructed.
- Connect HDMI eARC from the television; plug source devices into the TV because Arc Ultra has no HDMI input.
- Complete Sonos setup and run Trueplay with the room arranged as you normally use it.
- Set Speech Enhancement to the lowest level that makes dialogue clear, and use Night Sound when late listening requires fewer peaks.
- Confirm the television is passing the intended format; eARC may be required for higher-bandwidth formats.
- Add a Sub or Era 300 rear speakers only after deciding that the one-bar system’s sound and placement suit your room.
Common problems and fixes
No Dolby Atmos indicator
Check the source title, the TV’s eARC or passthrough setting and the cable path. A TV app, console or disc player may output Dolby Digital Plus, multichannel PCM or stereo instead of Atmos. Confirm basic audio first, then change one setting at a time.

Verify that each unit is powered, paired and not hidden behind furniture. Recheck distance and level settings from the main seat. Rear channels are effects channels; a quiet mix can be working normally even when it is not constantly obvious.
Arc Ultra sounds wide but not genuinely behind you
That is a limitation of a front-only system rather than necessarily a fault. Center the seating position, keep side walls reasonably reflective and rerun Trueplay after placement changes. Add dedicated rear speakers if discrete rear localization is the deciding requirement.
Dialogue is still hard to follow
Make sure the bar is centered and not inside a cabinet, then use the appropriate speech or voice mode. Check that the TV is not applying a conflicting sound mode or reducing the center channel. Night Sound reduces peaks; it is not a replacement for dialogue enhancement.
Verdict
The Samsung HW-Q990H is the stronger choice for a dedicated movie-and-gaming room: its included rear speakers and subwoofer create more physical surround and height effects, and its listed HDMI 2.1 pass-through can simplify high-frame-rate console routing. The Sonos Arc Ultra is the better fit for a neat one-bar installation, music-focused listening, smaller or awkward rooms, and buyers who value a gradual ecosystem upgrade. Compare complete system costs, available HDMI ports and real speaker placement—not just 11.1.4 versus 9.1.4—before deciding.
