Start with one change that matches the problem: use Voice Enhance or compare Adaptive Sound when speech is difficult, run SpaceFit Sound Pro when bass or clarity does not suit the room, and test Moderate Bass or Night Mode for late-night listening. These are reversible experiments, not a universal best preset. The right result depends on the room, program mix, listening position, and personal hearing.
What the HW-Q990H can adjust
The Samsung HW-Q990H is an 11.1.4-channel soundbar system with 23 speakers. Samsung’s UK product information lists a 300W compact subwoofer. Those capabilities give the system substantial dialogue, surround, and low-frequency output, but they also mean a setting that sounds balanced in one room can be too forceful or too diffuse in another.
The controls most relevant to this guide are Voice Enhance, Adaptive Sound, Active Voice Amplifier Pro, SpaceFit Sound Pro, AI Dynamic Bass Control, Moderate Bass, and Night Mode. Samsung also lists Standard, Surround Sound Expansion, and Game Pro sound modes. Feature availability and the way controls can be combined should be checked in the current on-screen menu or manual for the specific firmware installed.

| Problem | First comparison | What Samsung says it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speech is hard to follow | Voice Enhance versus your current setting | Emphasizes voices. | No reviewed Samsung material proves it is best for every program or listener. |
| Voices disappear in quiet scenes | Adaptive Sound versus your current setting | Automatically adjusts audio to content and is intended to keep voices clear, including in quiet scenes. | It changes the presentation by content, so some listeners may prefer a more direct mode. |
| Bass overwhelms the room | Moderate Bass on | Samsung’s UK description says it mutes the subwoofer while retaining bass from the soundbar itself. | This is targeted at reducing subwoofer output; it is not the same feature as Night Mode. |
| Bass or clarity does not suit the room | SpaceFit Sound Pro | Adapts sound to the environment to help improve clarity and optimize bass balance. | Furniture, walls, listening position, and room size still affect the result. |
| Listening late at night | Compare Night Mode and Moderate Bass separately | Night Mode is available on the model; Moderate Bass reduces subwoofer output as described above. | The reviewed product material does not explain Night Mode’s exact processing or its interaction with Moderate Bass. |
Make dialogue easier to understand
Try Voice Enhance first
Choose a familiar scene with several people speaking at a normal conversational level. Enable Voice Enhance, replay the same passage, and listen for consonants, quiet lines, and voices competing with music or effects. The goal is intelligibility, not simply making the center of the mix louder. If the result sounds thin, artificial, or too prominent, return to the previous setting.

Samsung lists Voice Enhance as an HW-Q990H feature, but the available documentation does not establish a universal intensity value or guarantee an improvement for every recording. Treat it as a reversible preference setting.
Compare Adaptive Sound
Adaptive Sound is a separate experiment. Samsung describes it as automatically adjusting audio to the content and aiming to keep voices clear even during quiet scenes. Use the same dialogue-heavy passage and compare Adaptive Sound with both Voice Enhance and the normal sound mode. Some content may benefit from adaptation, while a carefully mixed film or a listener who wants a direct presentation may prefer Standard or another familiar mode.
Do not assume that Adaptive Sound and Voice Enhance perform the same processing. They are documented as different features, and the sources do not demonstrate that one always outperforms the other.

Do not conflate Active Voice Amplifier Pro
The HW-Q990H also lists Active Voice Amplifier Pro. Its name should not be treated as proof that it is identical to Voice Enhance. Whether both controls appear on a particular setup, and whether they can be enabled together, must be confirmed in the current menu or manual. If both are available, compare them one at a time before testing any combination; otherwise it becomes difficult to identify which processing changed the sound.
Improve bass without making the room boom
Run SpaceFit Sound Pro for room-aware tuning
SpaceFit Sound Pro is the broad room-tuning option. Samsung says it adapts the sound to the environment, including clarity and bass balance. Run the feature according to the current on-screen instructions, then listen from the main seat with familiar music and film material.
Room correction cannot change the physical position of the subwoofer, walls, or furniture. If the subwoofer is in a corner or close to a wall, low frequencies may still collect in that area. SpaceFit Sound Pro should therefore be judged from the normal listening position, not from a single spot beside the subwoofer.

Use Moderate Bass when the subwoofer is the problem
Samsung’s UK product page describes Moderate Bass as muting the subwoofer while retaining bass produced by the soundbar itself. That makes it the clearest first test when explosions, music, or sustained low tones disturb other people, particularly at night.
Enable Moderate Bass and replay the same bass-heavy passage at the intended volume. If the sound becomes too restrained during ordinary daytime listening, turn it off and compare again. Change no other bass control during this test. The model also lists AI Dynamic Bass Control, but the supplied official descriptions do not provide enough detail to state how it interacts with Moderate Bass or to prescribe a value.
Set up quieter late-night listening
Compare Night Mode and Moderate Bass independently
Night Mode is available on the HW-Q990H, but the reviewed Samsung material does not describe its exact processing, target frequency range, or interaction with Moderate Bass. It should not be presented as interchangeable with subwoofer reduction.
Rank #4
- COMPLETE SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM: Includes a soundbar, subwoofer, and rear speakers for a full, immersive home theater audio experience.
- POWERFUL BASS: The dedicated wireless subwoofer delivers deep, rich low-frequency sound to enhance movies, music, and games.
- REAR SPEAKER CHANNELS: Rear speakers create a true surround sound environment, placing you right in the middle of the action.
- VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY: Designed to connect seamlessly with your TV and other devices for a straightforward and hassle-free audio setup.
- SPACE-SAVING DESIGN: The sleek soundbar mounts easily on a wall or sits neatly on an entertainment center, keeping your setup clean and organized.
- Choose a familiar scene containing speech, music, and a short loud effect.
- Listen at the lower volume you normally use at night with your current settings.
- Enable Night Mode only, using the current soundbar menu or manual for the exact navigation.
- Replay the scene and note whether speech, effects, and overall loudness remain comfortable.
- Return to the original state, then test Moderate Bass only.
- Keep the option that solves the actual disturbance. Test both together only if the current menu allows it and the combined result remains clear.
This process avoids assuming that both controls must be enabled. It also reveals whether the issue is subwoofer energy, sudden level changes, or speech being masked by the program mix.
Pick a sound mode deliberately
| Mode or control | Best reason to test it | Trade-off to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | A more direct baseline for comparing processing changes. | It may not adapt presentation to different content. |
| Adaptive Sound | Automatic content matching and an emphasis on keeping voices clear. | Its changing presentation may be less predictable than a fixed mode. |
| Surround Sound Expansion | When a wider, more enveloping presentation is preferred. | Expanded sound can make a dialogue mix feel less focused in some rooms. |
| Game Pro | Gaming-focused presentation. | It is not a documented universal solution for film dialogue or night listening. |
| Voice Enhance | Direct test for voices that need emphasis. | Too much emphasis can make the mix sound unnatural. |
| SpaceFit Sound Pro | Room-aware adjustment of clarity and bass balance. | It cannot eliminate every placement or room-acoustic issue. |
Samsung’s available information does not include controlled comparisons proving that one mode is best for all films, shows, music, games, rooms, or listeners. Use the table as a decision framework, then make the comparison with content you actually watch.

Randomly switching several options at once makes small changes difficult to hear and impossible to attribute. Use this sequence instead:
Best Value
- TRUE 7.1.2 CH ALL-IN-ONE SOUND: Experience powerful sound from a top tier all in one soundbar. Featuring 13 built in speakers with front, side and up firing channels, plus four built in woofers for rich, deep bass, it delivers sound that spreads throughout your space.
- CONVERTIBLE FIT: Choose the soundbar setup that suits you—whether mounted on the wall or placed flat on a table—without compromising audio quality. The built-in sensor detects the position of the soundbar and automatically optimizes the audio, ensuring you enjoy Dolby Atmos sound in any setup.

- SPACEFIT SOUND PRO: Enjoy a more immersive sound experience by pairing a compatible Samsung TV and up to five Samsung audio devices, such as Soundbars or Wi-Fi speakers, to work together for a more robust and detailed sound.* With compatible AI TVs**, it enhances audio for even more clarity.
- Record the baseline. Note the current sound mode, Voice Enhance state, Adaptive Sound state, SpaceFit Sound Pro state, Moderate Bass state, Night Mode state, and any other bass setting visible in the menu.
- Select reference material. Use one dialogue scene, one bass-heavy scene, and one ordinary program. Keep the listening seat and volume consistent.
- Change one control. Start with Voice Enhance for speech, SpaceFit Sound Pro for room balance, or Moderate Bass for intrusive subwoofer output.
- Replay the same passages. Listen for the specific symptom rather than judging the entire sound immediately.
- Keep or undo the change. If it does not help, restore the baseline before testing the next option.
- Test at the real use level. Night settings can sound acceptable at daytime volume but different at low volume, so judge them where they will actually be used.
- Recheck after content changes. A setting that helps a compressed television broadcast may not suit a theatrical film mix or game.
How to find the controls and keep firmware current
Samsung’s support listing identifies an English HW-Q990H user manual, version 2605200, modified 7 August 2026, and firmware version 1071, modified 20 August 2026. Menu names and available combinations can change with firmware.
The reviewed support search result does not expose a verified button-by-button remote sequence. For that reason, use the current on-screen settings menus or the latest Samsung manual rather than relying on an unverified key sequence from an older guide. If a feature described here is missing, check the model number, firmware, connected source, and current manual before concluding that the soundbar does not support it.
Common problems and fixes
Dialogue is still unclear after Voice Enhance
- Compare Adaptive Sound and Standard instead of stacking every voice-related control.
- Check whether the source itself has a stereo, broadcast, or poorly mixed soundtrack.
- Replay the test from the normal seat; a nearby position can give a misleading impression of center clarity.
- Undo the setting if voices become louder but less natural.
Bass remains disruptive with Moderate Bass
- Confirm that Moderate Bass is actually enabled in the current menu.
- Run SpaceFit Sound Pro and judge the result from the listening position.
- Lower the listening volume for night use; Moderate Bass targets subwoofer output but does not make the entire system silent.
- Consider physical placement, since walls and corners can reinforce low frequencies that software cannot fully remove.
Night Mode sounds different from expectations
- Do not assume Night Mode mutes the subwoofer or performs the same job as Moderate Bass.
- Test Night Mode alone, then restore the baseline before trying another control.
- Use the current manual or menu to verify whether the feature is available and how it is described for the installed firmware.
Settings worth trying first
For a voice problem, begin with Voice Enhance, then compare Adaptive Sound. For a room that produces uneven bass, run SpaceFit Sound Pro. For late-night subwoofer disturbance, test Moderate Bass; compare Night Mode separately because Samsung does not document the two as equivalent. Keep one change at a time, use familiar material, and retain the setting only when it improves the specific problem without creating a new one.

Can Voice Enhance and Active Voice Amplifier Pro be used together?
The available Samsung material identifies them as separate features but does not establish that they can always be combined. Check the current HW-Q990H menu and manual. If both appear, compare each alone before trying both together.
Why do the same settings sound different in different rooms?
SpaceFit Sound Pro is intended to adapt clarity and bass balance to the environment, but room dimensions, walls, furniture, subwoofer placement, and listening position still affect what reaches your ears. A setting is not guaranteed to produce the same result in every room.
Does Moderate Bass replace Night Mode?
No equivalent function is established. Samsung describes Moderate Bass as muting the subwoofer while retaining bass from the soundbar. Night Mode is a separate listed feature whose precise processing and interaction with Moderate Bass are not explained in the reviewed product material.
