Whether you can leave a group chat on a Samsung phone depends on the messaging app and the chat type. Samsung Messages does not let you remove yourself from a group chat created by someone else. In Google Messages, a Leave group option may appear for some RCS chats; if it does not, muting or deleting the conversation only changes what happens on your phone—it does not remove you from the group.
First, identify the messaging app
Open the conversation and check which app you are using: Samsung Messages or Google Messages. The steps and available controls differ, so there is no single leave-chat instruction that applies to every Samsung phone or group text.
Samsung’s group-messaging instructions for Samsung Messages apply to devices running Android 11 or older. Samsung says the app is being discontinued on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer starting July 6, 2026, and is unavailable for download on those devices. For the latest device and One UI migration details, see Samsung’s guide to switching from Samsung Messages to Google Messages.

Check for Leave group in Google Messages
A Samsung Members moderator says Google Messages may offer Leave group for qualifying RCS group conversations. This is conditional community guidance, not a guarantee that every RCS chat—or every group containing people on different platforms—will have the control.

- Open the group conversation in Google Messages.
- Tap the three-dot menu, then tap Details.
- Look for Leave group. If it is present, select it and follow any confirmation prompt.
The moderator’s guidance ties the option to active RCS and all participants using RCS-compatible messaging apps. Samsung Members posted this guidance on March 26, 2025, in its discussion of exiting a group text without blocking. It does not establish that every group meeting those conditions will necessarily show the control.
Why Leave group may not appear
Samsung’s support page describes Samsung Messages group messaging as SMS/MMS. The Google Messages leave option described by the Samsung Members moderator is tied to RCS conditions. If the control is missing, check which app you opened and whether the conversation is using RCS or SMS/MMS; do not assume the group is broken or that one setting is the definite cause.

If you cannot leave, mute or delete the conversation
Samsung’s stated alternatives when you cannot remove yourself from another person’s Samsung Messages group chat are to mute notifications or delete the conversation. Both actions are local: deleting the thread from your phone does not remove your account or number from the other participants’ group, and muting does not change group membership.
