The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra’s defining feature is a larger-than-usual foldable workspace: an 8-inch inner display paired with a 6.5-inch cover screen. That gives it more room for split-screen apps, documents and creative work than the standard Galaxy Z Fold8, but the bigger format is not automatically better for everyday carry. The trade-offs include a higher starting price, a 215 g body, no S Pen support and telephoto performance Tom’s Guide found weak.

Samsung began sales in select markets on August 7, 2026, with a wider global rollout. Availability and current pricing vary by market. Samsung’s launch announcement describes the Ultra as bringing “Galaxy’s renowned Ultra standard to foldables”; that is the company’s positioning, not an independent assessment.

What makes the Ultra different?

The Ultra’s pitch is screen area. Samsung lists an 8-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover screen, compared with 7.6 inches and 5.5 inches, respectively, on the standard Fold8. Both are Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rates, according to Samsung Mobile Press. The Ultra’s larger inner screen can make two apps, a wide document or a detailed image easier to work with at once; whether that extra room is worth carrying and paying for depends on how often you use the unfolded display.

The shape matters as much as the diagonal measurement. TechRadar describes the Ultra’s inner screen as nearly square and its cover screen as narrow, while noting the standard Fold8’s smaller, differently shaped displays. A nearly square canvas can suit side-by-side content, but some apps and video may not use the whole panel efficiently. The cover screen is useful for quick phone tasks, though its proportions may feel less natural to people who prefer a conventional phone display.

Samsung lists the Ultra at 215 g and 4.1 mm thick when unfolded. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Samsung Mobile Press specifications also list a 5,000 mAh battery and 45 W fast charging.

Is the larger screen useful as a pocket office?

Multitasking and documents

The larger inner panel is most compelling when you routinely need more than one app visible: for example, keeping a meeting window beside notes, reading a document while drafting a reply, or comparing two pages. It also offers more space to inspect layouts and images than a typical phone screen. These are practical benefits of the display dimensions, not a guarantee that every app supports an ideal tablet-style layout.

Creative work

Photo review, markup with a finger, and arranging content can benefit from a larger canvas. But the Fold8 Ultra is not a substitute for a stylus-driven workflow: Tom’s Guide identifies the absence of S Pen support as a drawback. If handwriting or precise pen input is central to your work, that omission may outweigh the screen-area advantage.

Everyday carry

Unfolded, the device is remarkably thin by Samsung’s specification, but it weighs 215 g and folds into a thicker phone than a single-screen handset. Consider whether you will actually open it throughout the day. If most of your use is messaging, calls and quick browsing on the cover screen, the larger inner display may add less value than its size and price suggest.

How good are the cameras and battery?

Camera hardware and review caveats

Samsung lists a 200 MP wide camera, a 50 MP ultra-wide camera and a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Those specifications describe the camera modules, not the quality of every resulting image. In its review, Tom’s Guide called out weak telephoto performance, so the 3x lens should not be treated as proof that the Ultra is a camera-first choice. See Samsung’s U.S. product page for the listed camera configuration.

Battery and display measurements

Tom’s Guide measured 14 hours and 33 minutes in its custom web-browsing test over 5G with the display set to 150 nits. That is one publication’s test result under stated conditions, not a promise of all-day runtime for every user or a direct prediction of mixed-use battery life. Tom’s Guide also measured a maximum brightness of 2,687 nits in its review; Samsung rates the display at up to 3,000 nits. The lab result and manufacturer rating are different kinds of figures.

For context, Tom’s Guide compared its battery result with its own results for the Fold7, standard Fold8, Razr Fold, Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The comparison is useful within that outlet’s testing method, but it is not an independent replication. Samsung’s 5,000 mAh capacity and 45 W charging figure are specifications rather than a measured charge-time result.

Ultra or standard Galaxy Z Fold8?

The standard Fold8 is the natural alternative if you want a foldable but do not need the Ultra’s extra display area. Samsung confirms the screen and camera distinctions; the best choice depends on local pricing and how valuable the larger workspace is in your own routine.

Tom’s Guide’s review lists the Ultra’s starting prices for the U.S., U.K. and Australia. Those are dated review figures, not a guarantee of current retail pricing. Compare live prices and storage configurations in your market before deciding: the Ultra’s premium is easiest to justify if the extra screen changes how you work, not simply because its name says “Ultra.” TechRadar’s Fold8 comparison discusses the differences in screen dimensions and shape.

What should you check before buying?

  • Availability: Samsung’s August 5, 2026 announcement said sales started August 7 in select markets and would expand globally. That launch statement does not confirm present stock in every country.
  • Case fit: Tom’s Guide found that a Fold7 case did not fit its Fold8 Ultra review unit. Choose an accessory explicitly listed for the exact Fold8 Ultra model and verify the seller’s compatibility details; do not assume an older Fold case will fit.
  • Work habits: Think through the tasks you will do on the inner screen. If you rarely multitask or view large documents, the standard Fold8’s smaller displays may be a better fit.
  • Camera priorities: The published hardware includes a 3x telephoto camera, but Tom’s Guide’s review criticized its telephoto performance. If zoom photography is a priority, consider that qualitative caveat alongside the specifications.
