Short answer: In the current US examples, a Galaxy Z Fold7 costs more to buy and has a higher cited screen-repair price than a Galaxy S25 Ultra. That does not prove every Fold costs more over its life, because your result depends on the price you actually pay, repairs that actually occur, protection-plan terms, how long you keep the phone, and whether you sell privately or use a trade-in offer. Compare ownership with this formula: total ownership cost = purchase price − resale proceeds + repair costs + protection-plan costs.
This comparison uses Samsung’s US pricing and repair information available for the March 2026 MSRP list: Galaxy Z Fold7 configurations and Galaxy S25 Ultra repair pricing. It assumes an unlocked US phone and does not treat a purchase-linked trade-in credit as guaranteed resale money. Prices and program rules can change, so refresh the figures for your exact generation, country, storage tier, and sale date.
What the comparison can—and cannot—tell you
A Fold and an S Ultra are not the same hardware category. The Fold has a flexible inner display and a conventional outer display; the S Ultra has one rigid phone display. That difference creates different repair exposure and different purchase prices. It does not, by itself, establish how often either phone fails or which one will retain a higher percentage of its value.

The official pages reviewed provide conditional repair prices: what Samsung lists if a particular repair is needed. They do not provide a controlled, same-age study of Fold-versus-Ultra failure frequency or depreciation. A $449 repair quote therefore cannot be converted into a claim that Fold owners are a certain percentage more likely to need repairs.

Use the figures below as inputs to your own calculation rather than as a timeless verdict. A 2026 Fold7 bought at a large launch discount and sold carefully after two years can have a different result from a full-price Fold7 repaired twice and traded in immediately.
Start with the ownership-cost equation
Write down four numbers for the same phone and the same holding period:
- Purchase price: the amount charged for the phone after any ordinary discount, but before treating a conditional trade-in credit as cash you would have received independently.
- Resale proceeds: money from a private sale, marketplace transaction, carrier buyback, or a standalone trade-in offer when you exit the phone.
- Repairs: the out-of-pocket amounts for repairs that actually occur, including the applicable tax and any service charges not included in a quoted price.
- Protection costs: Samsung Care+ or another protection plan’s premiums plus any deductible or service fee that applies to a claim.
Then calculate purchase price − resale proceeds + repairs + protection costs. Divide by the number of months you owned the phone if you want a monthly ownership figure. Keep the sale channel visible: a private-sale amount, a purchase-linked trade-in credit, and a standalone trade-in offer are not interchangeable.
Upfront prices: the Fold7 starts higher in this US list
Samsung Business US lists the following unlocked Galaxy Z Fold7 manufacturer suggested retail prices in a sheet effective March 2026. Samsung says prices may change without notice, and these are list prices rather than guaranteed street prices.
| Phone configuration | Listed US MSRP | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold7, 256GB, unlocked | $1,999.99 | Samsung Business US list price, effective March 2026 |
| Galaxy Z Fold7, 512GB, unlocked | $2,119.99 | Samsung Business US list price, effective March 2026 |
| Galaxy Z Fold7, 1TB, unlocked | $2,419.99 | Samsung Business US list price, effective March 2026 |
| Galaxy S25 Ultra | Not stated in the cited pricing material | Use the exact US storage configuration and the price actually paid for your comparison |
The Fold7 512GB version adds $120 to the 256GB list price; the 1TB version adds $420 to the 256GB list price. Those differences matter twice: they increase the initial cash outlay, and the extra storage may or may not be recovered when you sell. Do not assume the full storage premium returns in a private sale or trade-in; obtain an offer for the exact capacity.
Compare actual transaction prices, not just MSRPs. A launch promotion, employer discount, carrier bill credit, or purchase-linked trade-in can reduce what leaves your account. Record each incentive separately so you do not mistake a conditional credit for the phone’s independent resale value.
Repair exposure: cited screen prices favor the Ultra
Samsung’s US repair table lists a $449 Galaxy Z Fold7 inner-screen repair and a $279 Galaxy S25 Ultra screen repair. The amounts differ by model and by repair type. Samsung’s table distinguishes a screen repair from a screen-module replacement, so do not substitute a different line item or assume that every display problem receives the same quote.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Model and repair | Listed price | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold7 inner-screen repair | $449 | Samsung US table; price can vary by region or authorized service location and excludes taxes and fees |
| Galaxy S25 Ultra screen repair | $279 | Samsung US table; price can vary by region or authorized service location and excludes taxes and fees |
| Galaxy Z Fold6 first interior-screen repair | $200 promotional price | Samsung labels this as a promotion, not the normal ongoing price |
| Galaxy Z Fold6 subsequent interior-screen repairs | $549 | Listed full out-of-warranty price after the promotional first repair |
The Fold6 example shows why model and repair count must stay attached to every number. Its $200 first-repair amount is a promotional allowance; presenting it as the permanent Fold repair price would understate the exposure. Conversely, using the $549 subsequent Fold6 figure for a Fold7 would mix generations.

Repair price is not repair probability
A more expensive repair raises the cost if it happens. It does not show that the repair is more likely. The cited Samsung material contains prices conditional on a repair, not a comparative lifetime failure rate for the two families. Reliability claims require a separate, controlled dataset with the same age, usage, environment, and definition of failure.
What a quote may leave out
- Regional pricing or a different authorized service location can change the amount.
- Taxes and fees are excluded from the cited table.
- A service center may determine that a screen-module replacement or another component is required rather than the listed screen repair.
- Accidental damage, cosmetic condition, warranty status, and parts availability can affect the path and final quote.
Before authorizing work, ask the service location which repair category it is quoting, whether the amount includes labor, and what taxes or additional fees will be added. Save the written estimate; it is the figure that belongs in your ownership calculation, not a generic web-table entry.
Protection plans change the risk you carry
Samsung’s Warranty and Care experience can show estimated repair costs alongside Samsung Care+ costs. That comparison is useful because it puts a possible out-of-pocket repair beside the plan’s premium and service charge. However, Samsung states that Care+ coverage, service type, promotions, deductibles, and terms vary by country or region.
For a US calculation, enter the current Care+ premium for the exact phone and enrollment date, then add the deductible or service fee for the specific claim type. Do not use a Care+ price from another country, an earlier promotion, or a different Fold generation. If you self-insure, enter zero for plan cost but keep enough cash available for the repair prices that apply to your model.
When a plan can make the Fold easier to budget
The Fold’s cited inner-screen repair is $449 for the Fold7 example, so a plan can reduce the size of a single unexpected bill if its premium and applicable service fee are lower than the uncovered repair. That is a cash-flow and risk decision, not proof that the plan lowers your expected cost. If no covered incident occurs, premiums are still part of ownership cost.
Questions to answer before enrolling
- Is accidental damage to the inner display covered, and what service fee applies?
- Is there a claim limit, replacement limit, or enrollment window?
- Does the plan use repair, replacement, or a refurbished device for the claim?
- What happens if you sell the phone or move to a different region?
Use the current regional terms shown at purchase or enrollment. A plan’s headline price without its deductible and coverage limits is not an ownership-cost figure.
Resale value, trade-in credit, and private sale are different numbers
Samsung’s trade-in material describes an instant credit tied to a qualifying purchase. Eligibility and credit amounts can change, and the device must satisfy the program’s conditions. That credit is not the same as cash you could obtain by selling the phone without buying another device.
Samsung also describes a separate standalone program operated independently by Likewize. Its value is based on the device model and condition. Treat that offer as one exit-channel quote, not as a guaranteed private-sale price and not as a promise of what Samsung will offer on a future purchase.

- One UI Software: User-friendly interface for an intuitive and seamless experience.
- Foldable Tablet Experience: Combines phone and tablet functionality seamlessly.
- Multi-Window App Continuity: Run multiple apps simultaneously for efficient multitasking.

Condition and eligibility can move the exit value
- Confirm the exact model, storage capacity, and market variant.
- Check whether the phone powers on, charges, and completes the program’s diagnostic checks.
- Disclose cracked glass, display defects, hinge or frame damage, water exposure, missing parts, and heavy cosmetic wear.
- Remove screen locks, sign out of accounts, and follow the program’s data-erasure instructions before shipment or handover.
- Keep the quote tied to its expiration date; offers can change before the device is received and inspected.
Fold condition deserves particular care because the inner and outer displays, hinge area, and protective layers can affect whether a buyer accepts the phone and at what price. Do not assume that an undamaged outer screen means the device qualifies as flawless if the inner display or hinge shows wear.
Why no single depreciation percentage is reliable here
No independent, controlled Fold-versus-S Ultra depreciation statistic is established in the cited material. A percentage based on one marketplace listing, one trade-in table, or mixed release years would not answer the ownership question. To compare retention, collect offers for the same age, storage tier, condition, region, and date, then calculate resale proceeds ÷ original purchase price for each phone. Label the channel and condition beside every result.
How to calculate your own Fold-versus-Ultra cost
- Fix the comparison date and market. For example, use US unlocked phones purchased in 2026 and sold after 24 months. Do not mix a US Fold7 with an overseas S Ultra offer.
- Record the amount actually paid. Start with the invoice total and list discounts, carrier credits, and any purchase-linked trade-in credit separately.
- Match storage tiers. Compare 256GB with 256GB where both are available, or explain why a different capacity is necessary. Storage premiums should not disappear inside a blended average.
- Choose the protection approach. Enter the current Care+ premium and applicable deductible, or document that you are self-insuring.
- Log every repair. Record the model, repair category, service location, quoted price, taxes, fees, and whether the work was covered by a plan or warranty.
- Get exit quotes at the same time. Obtain a private-sale estimate, a purchase-linked trade-in estimate if you are buying another phone, and a standalone trade-in offer. Keep them in separate columns.
- Apply the equation. Subtract the proceeds from the amount paid, then add uncovered repairs and protection costs. Divide by months owned for a monthly figure.
A concrete Fold7 arithmetic check
If you paid the full $1,999.99 March 2026 US list price for an unlocked 256GB Fold7 and later paid one $449 inner-screen repair, your cost before resale proceeds, protection premiums, taxes, and other repairs would be $2,448.99. Subtract the actual amount you receive when selling to complete the calculation. This is an arithmetic illustration using the cited list and repair prices, not a prediction of what your phone will cost to own.

Decision framework by owner type
You replace phones frequently
For a one-year or two-year cycle, the purchase price and exit channel dominate. A Fold bought near list price needs a sufficiently strong resale or trade-in offer to offset its higher initial outlay. Obtain current offers before buying rather than assuming the Fold’s larger screen or newer form factor guarantees better retention.
You keep a phone until it fails
Repair exposure and protection terms matter more than a short-term trade-in quote. Compare the uncovered inner-screen price, the plan’s total premiums and deductibles, and the availability of authorized service in your area. The S Ultra’s $279 cited screen repair is lower than the Fold7’s $449 inner-screen repair in this example, but neither number predicts how many repairs you will need.
You are buying for business or fleet use
Keep business-account offers separate from consumer resale. Samsung’s business bulk trade-in values apply to eligible business accounts and should not be blended with consumer private-sale or trade-in figures. Use the account type, device grade, and purchase terms that will actually apply to your organization.
You want the lowest predictable monthly cost
Calculate a conservative case that includes one plausible uncovered repair, then a protected case using the current plan premium and deductible. Present both results rather than hiding risk in a single average. The lower monthly number is meaningful only if its assumptions match your coverage and sale behavior.

Common mistakes that distort the comparison
- Using MSRP as the purchase price after a discount: list prices are a reference point; your invoice controls the calculation.
- Calling trade-in credit resale value: an instant credit requires a qualifying purchase and eligible device.
- Mixing generations: Fold6 promotional and subsequent-repair prices do not establish Fold7 pricing.
- Ignoring storage: a 1TB Fold7 costs $420 more than the 256GB list configuration, and its exit offer may not recover that premium.
- Adding a repair quote as if it were certain: include repairs that occurred, or model a clearly labeled risk scenario; do not claim a failure happened when it did not.
- Comparing regions: US repair prices and Care+ terms cannot be transferred to another country.
- Forgetting taxes and fees: Samsung’s cited repair prices exclude them.
- Assuming every display issue is the same repair: screen repair and screen-module replacement are separate categories in Samsung’s table.
Bottom line for the 2026 US examples
The Galaxy S Ultra is the lower-cost repair example: Samsung lists $279 for a Galaxy S25 Ultra screen repair versus $449 for a Galaxy Z Fold7 inner-screen repair. The Fold7 also starts at a higher listed price—$1,999.99 for 256GB unlocked, rising to $2,419.99 for 1TB. Those facts make the Ultra easier to budget when you are comparing an uncovered screen incident and similar purchase discounts.
They do not establish that every S Ultra is cheaper to own or that a Fold loses value faster. Your answer comes from the actual price paid, the repairs that occur, current protection terms, holding period, condition, and exit channel. Refresh those inputs for the exact generation and market before making the purchase decision.
