The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is a meaningful upgrade for people who want a larger display, a bigger battery and a higher-resolution camera system—but it is not an automatic buy for Fold7 owners. Tom’s Guide’s review found strong performance and battery life, while also criticizing the telephoto camera, the lack of S Pen support, minimal design changes and the price. Those are that publication’s findings, not my firsthand test results.
What changed in the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra?
Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra in July 2026. The company said the new Galaxy Z line would become available in select markets beginning August 7, 2026, with availability and configurations varying by market, carrier and retailer. The clearest hardware differences are the screen sizes and camera specifications. Samsung lists an 8-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover display for the Ultra, compared with 7.6 inches and 5.5 inches, respectively, on the standard Fold8. The Ultra’s listed rear cameras are a 200 MP wide, 50 MP ultrawide and 10 MP 3x telephoto. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of image quality. Samsung’s U.S. product page presents the Ultra as the productivity-focused top model.

It also lists 120Hz refresh rates and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits for both screens. These are regional manufacturer specifications; check the product listing for your market before buying. How much better are the screens and performance?
The larger inner and cover displays are the most immediately tangible changes for someone moving from a smaller Fold. The extra space should make the folded phone less cramped and give apps more room when unfolded; whether that matters depends on how often you read, work or multitask on the phone. Samsung describes the model as designed for AI-powered multitasking, but that positioning is not an independent measure of productivity. Its July 22, 2026 first look calls it the first Ultra model in the Galaxy Z series.
Tom’s Guide praised the display and performance in its review. Its test sample reached 2,687 nits in that publication’s screen measurement, while Samsung rates peak brightness at up to 3,000 nits. These figures come from different contexts: one is an independent test result and the other a manufacturer rating, so they should not be treated as directly equivalent.

What do the battery and charging figures mean in practice?
Samsung Australia specifies a 5,000 mAh battery and 45W wired charging, and claims up to 27 hours of video playback. The playback figure is Samsung’s “up to” claim, not a measured everyday-use result. Tom’s Guide lists 45W wired and 20W wireless charging for its review configuration; Samsung Australia lists 15W wireless charging. Because the wireless figures differ, check the official specifications for the exact regional model rather than assuming one rate applies worldwide.

In Tom’s Guide’s custom battery test, which browsed the web over 5G at 150 nits, the Fold8 Ultra lasted 14 hours and 33 minutes. In the same test, Tom’s Guide recorded 10 hours and 44 minutes for the Fold7 and 12 hours and 19 minutes for the standard Fold8. These are controlled results from that publication’s test, not a promise of how long the phone will last in your routine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are the cameras a reason to upgrade?
The headline camera change is the 200 MP wide camera, accompanied by a 50 MP ultrawide and 10 MP 3x telephoto in Samsung’s listed specifications. Tom’s Guide praised the camera system overall but criticized the telephoto performance. That distinction matters: the headline resolution and lens count do not by themselves establish that every camera is better in real use. If zoom photography is a priority, weigh the review’s telephoto criticism against the broader system rather than upgrading on the 200 MP figure alone.
What are the main compromises?
- Limited redesign: Tom’s Guide characterized the design changes as minimal, so owners seeking a substantially different form factor may not find one.
- No S Pen support: The review notes that the Ultra does not support Samsung’s S Pen, a drawback for people who use a stylus for notes or drawing.
- Telephoto concerns: Tom’s Guide found the telephoto camera disappointing despite praising the cameras overall.
- High launch pricing: The review described the price as a drawback; the value depends on local pricing and how much the larger screens and other changes matter to you.
How much does the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra cost?
Tom’s Guide reported launch-time U.S. prices of $2,099 for the 256GB/12GB configuration, $2,299 for 512GB and $2,699 for 1TB/16GB. It also reported £1,899 in the UK and AU$2,999 in Australia for the 256GB/12GB configuration. These are publication-reported launch prices, not guaranteed current or street prices; check local retailers for current availability and pricing. Configuration and availability vary by market.
Should you upgrade?
For an owner who wants a bigger cover display and main screen, values the upgraded camera specifications, and would benefit from the reported battery improvement, the Fold8 Ultra has a credible case. The case is weaker if your current foldable already meets your needs, you rely on S Pen input, expect a major design change, or prioritize telephoto photography. The best decision turns on whether the larger screens and tested endurance gains address a real limitation in your current phone—not simply the Ultra name or the 200 MP specification.
