The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 is a strong fit if a compact folded phone and useful cover-screen interactions matter more to you than major camera or battery upgrades. It brings a faster processor and brighter main display, but its $1,199 US launch price for 256GB is $100 higher than the previous generation, while the camera hardware and battery endurance are broadly similar, according to Tom’s Guide. That makes it an incremental upgrade rather than an automatic recommendation for Flip7 owners.
What the Galaxy Z Flip8 does differently
The Flip8’s defining benefit is its foldable shape: it closes into a smaller footprint than a conventional smartphone, making it easier to carry in a pocket or small bag. Open it, and Samsung’s reported specifications give it a 6.9-inch main display with a 1–120Hz refresh rate. The outer 4.1-inch FlexWindow is intended for quick interactions without opening the phone.
Samsung says the FlexWindow brings apps, insights, actions, and assistance to the cover screen, including Now Brief and access to Gemini. These are Samsung’s descriptions of the feature set; how useful they are depends on which tasks and apps you actually use from the outer screen.

Performance and screen: the clearest upgrades
Tom’s Guide describes performance and screen brightness as improvements over the Flip7. Those changes matter most if you run demanding apps, switch between tasks frequently, or often use your phone outdoors. They are less compelling reasons to upgrade if your current phone already feels fast and its display is easy to see in your normal settings.

The review also found the phone’s design little changed. The Flip8 therefore appears to refine the existing formula rather than redefine what a Samsung flip phone can do.
Camera and battery: familiar trade-offs
Tom’s Guide characterizes the camera hardware as broadly similar to the previous generation. That makes the Flip8 a less convincing choice for someone upgrading primarily for more camera versatility; the available evidence does not establish a major hardware leap.

Battery capacity is listed at 4,300mAh, and Tom’s Guide reports an average of 12 hours and 5 minutes in its own battery-drain test. That is a result under that publication’s test conditions, not a guaranteed runtime for every owner. Screen use, connectivity, apps, and settings can change real-world endurance. Tom’s Guide also judged battery endurance broadly similar to the previous model.
Price and value: who should pay the premium?
Tom’s Guide reports a US launch starting price of $1,199 for the 256GB model. Prices, promotions, and configurations vary by location and change over time, so check the current local offer rather than treating the launch figure as today’s price.

The reviewer’s central value concern is that the $100 increase over the prior generation is difficult to justify when camera hardware and battery endurance have changed little. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict. If the faster performance, brighter screen, and cover-screen features solve everyday annoyances for you, they may justify the extra cost. If your priority is a substantial camera or battery improvement, the evidence here does not show that the Flip8 delivers one.
Should Flip7 owners upgrade?
For most Flip7 owners whose phones still meet their needs, the Flip8’s incremental changes do not make an upgrade an obvious necessity. Consider moving up if you specifically want the reported performance and brightness improvements or expect to use the FlexWindow’s quick interactions often. If those are not priorities, keeping the Flip7 is the more economical choice.

Who is the Galaxy Z Flip8 for?
- Good fit: You want a phone that folds into a pocket-friendly form and value quick cover-screen interactions.
- Potential fit: You want a brighter screen or faster performance and find the current local price reasonable.
- Less suitable: You want a clearly upgraded camera system or markedly better battery endurance, or you already own a Flip7 that works well.
Samsung announced the Flip8 on August 5, 2026, and said sales would begin August 7.
