You can use Wi-Fi Calling on a Samsung Galaxy to make calls and send messages over Wi-Fi when cellular reception is weak or unavailable—but only if your exact phone, carrier, account, and active SIM or eSIM support it. On many Galaxy phones, the switch is under Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling. Menus and eligibility vary, so confirm support with your carrier before relying on the feature.

What Wi-Fi Calling does—and what it still requires

Wi-Fi Calling routes supported calls and messages over a Wi-Fi connection when cellular service is unavailable or inadequate. Samsung describes it as a carrier-enabled feature, not a separate internet-calling app: the phone still needs active carrier service, and both the device and carrier must support it. Samsung Ireland’s support page, last updated 19 March 2026, describes the feature as allowing calls and messages over Wi-Fi when the mobile signal is unavailable, while noting that availability depends on the network provider and device (Samsung Ireland support).

If Wi-Fi and cellular networks are both available, some Galaxy phones let you set a calling preference for Wi-Fi or cellular; the available controls depend on the carrier and model. Samsung’s US instructions explain the feature and its settings, but they do not guarantee support on every Galaxy phone or carrier (Samsung: Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on Galaxy phones).

How do I turn on Wi-Fi Calling on my Samsung phone?

  1. Connect the phone to a Wi-Fi network and make sure the phone has active service through its SIM or eSIM.
  2. Open Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling.
  3. Turn on the Wi-Fi Calling switch. If prompted, review and enter the requested emergency information, then save it.
  4. Review any available calling-preference options. The labels and choices can differ by model and carrier.

On some phones, you can also open the Phone app and select More options > Settings > Wi-Fi Calling, or use a Wi-Fi Calling control in Quick settings. Samsung documents these alternate routes in its Galaxy call-settings guidance. If a control is absent or the labels differ, use your carrier’s instructions for your specific phone and service.

Does my Samsung Galaxy support Wi-Fi Calling?

There is no universal answer based on the Galaxy name alone. Samsung says Wi-Fi Calling may not be available on all carriers or devices. Confirm that your exact model is supported and that the feature is enabled for your account with the carrier providing your active SIM or eSIM. Google’s Phone app guidance also advises checking carrier support and notes that the Wi-Fi Calling option may not appear if the carrier does not support it (Google: Make calls over Wi-Fi).

For AT&T phones, Samsung says VoLTE must be enabled to activate Wi-Fi Calling. That requirement should not be generalized to every carrier; ask your provider which account and phone settings apply to your service.

Why is Wi-Fi Calling missing or not working?

Check the simple causes first. A missing menu can indicate a model or carrier limitation, while a visible switch that will not activate can also point to Wi-Fi, service, or account setup. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking carrier support and service, then working through connection and software checks before contacting support (Samsung: Wi-Fi Calling is not working on Samsung phone).

  1. Check the Wi-Fi connection. Confirm that the phone is connected and that the network can access the internet. If possible, try another Wi-Fi network to distinguish a phone issue from a problem with the current network.
  2. Check the setting and service. Open Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling and verify the feature is on. Confirm that the intended SIM or eSIM is active and that the carrier supports the phone and account.
  3. Restart and update. Restart the phone, then install any available software updates and check the feature again.
  4. Reset network settings only if needed. Samsung suggests a network-settings reset when simpler checks do not resolve the issue. It removes saved network configurations, so expect to set those up again.
  5. Ask the carrier to check provisioning. Have the provider confirm that Wi-Fi Calling is enabled for your account and ask whether any APN settings or other carrier-specific steps are required.

Will Wi-Fi Calling work for emergency calls?

During setup, the phone may request emergency contact information, and Samsung’s Wi-Fi Calling settings include an Emergency Address option. Review the emergency address associated with your service and update it through the carrier’s system when you move. Do not assume that an address entered on the phone has updated the carrier record; ask the carrier how it handles emergency-address registration for your account.

Do Wi-Fi calls cost money?

Charges depend on the carrier and plan. Google warns that charges may apply and directs users to their mobile provider for details. Check your plan’s terms with the carrier rather than assuming Wi-Fi calls are free or billed like a particular kind of call.

Can I use Samsung Wi-Fi Calling when traveling?

Travel availability, call treatment, and charges depend on the carrier, plan, destination, and how the carrier handles Wi-Fi Calling abroad. The available guidance does not establish one international-use or roaming rule for all carriers. Before traveling, ask your provider whether your account can use Wi-Fi Calling at your destination and what rates or restrictions apply.
