The Samsung Galaxy Watch8 is a lighter-looking redesign with a brighter display and updated software, but it is not a clear all-around leap over the Watch7. It is worth considering if you want the refreshed cushion-shaped case, Wear OS 6 and Gemini. The case for upgrading is weaker if battery life is your main concern: Wareable found only a small improvement on the smaller model it tested.
What changed from the Galaxy Watch7?
The most visible change is the standard Watch8’s cushion-shaped case. Samsung says it reengineered the internal structure to make the watch 11% thinner than its predecessor, with a 30% improvement in component-mounting capability. Those are Samsung’s launch claims, not independent measurements. Wareable liked the refreshed appearance, but did not find the comfort difference over Watch7 certain.
The display and battery figures also move up on paper. Samsung UK lists peak brightness of 3,000 nits for Watch8 versus 2,000 nits for Watch7. Battery capacity rises from 300mAh to 325mAh in the 40mm models and from 425mAh to 435mAh in the 44mm models. The listed weights are slightly higher, not lower: 30g versus 28.9g for 40mm, and 34g versus 33.8g for 44mm. These are nominal specifications; they do not predict how long a charge will last.
For software, Watch8 launched with Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch. Samsung called it the first smartwatch to come out of the box with Google Gemini and Wear OS 6. Wareable praised Gemini and the combined software experience, while noting that some health and fitness features were uneven or restricted. See Samsung’s launch announcement and Wareable’s independent review for their respective claims and findings.

How long does the battery last?
Samsung’s published specifications do not provide a measured runtime in hours or days, so battery capacity alone cannot answer this. Wareable’s review says the smaller Watch8 it tested delivered barely better battery life than the Watch7. That is the most relevant independent finding available here, but it applies to the reviewer’s tested smaller edition and conditions, not every size or user.
Choose the 44mm model if its larger display and nominally larger battery suit your priorities, but do not treat its 435mAh capacity as proof of a particular runtime. Actual endurance depends on how the watch is configured and used; the cited materials do not establish a universal day count.

Does Watch8 work with a non-Samsung Android phone?
Samsung’s compatibility statements differ by region. Its global launch specifications say Android 12.0 or higher and more than 1.5GB of memory. Samsung UK lists Android 11 or higher with Google Mobile Services and at least 1.5GB RAM. Check Samsung’s compatibility information for your market and phone rather than treating either threshold as universal. Samsung also says some AI features require a Galaxy smartphone and a Samsung account, so pairing with another Android phone does not necessarily unlock every feature.
Samsung UK describes health and wellness features as general wellness and fitness tools, not products intended to detect, diagnose or treat medical conditions or sleep disorders. Treat wellness scores as informational, not clinical diagnoses. The regional requirements and disclaimer are on Samsung UK’s Watch8 comparison page.

Watch8 or Watch8 Classic?
The standard Watch8 is the simpler, lighter option; the Classic adds physical controls and a more substantial case. Samsung’s launch specifications make the differences clear:

US list prices and buying considerations
Samsung US’s MSRP price list effective December 2025 gives these list prices. They are dated US MSRPs, not live transaction prices; check current retailer pricing and availability before buying.

| 40mm Bluetooth | $349.99 |
| 40mm LTE | $399.99 |
| 44mm Bluetooth | $379.99 |

The LTE variant is a distinct configuration, so confirm that the size and connectivity you want match the listing. Samsung’s dated MSRP sheet is available as a Samsung US Wearables MSRP PDF.
Verdict: who should buy the Watch8?
The Watch8 makes the most sense for someone who wants Samsung’s current standard smartwatch with a refreshed case, brighter-display specification and current Wear OS software. It is a more qualified recommendation for Watch7 owners: the display and design have changed, but the battery-capacity increases are modest, and Wareable found little practical battery improvement on its smaller test model. Before choosing, weigh the wrist fit and size against the phone-specific feature limits, and consider whether the Classic’s physical controls are worth its extra bulk.
