Short answer: choose Galaxy Watch Ultra2 if you use a compatible Android phone; choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 if your daily phone is an iPhone. The watches are not interchangeable across ecosystems, and that compatibility decision matters more than their peak specifications. After that, Samsung claims the brighter display and provides a published battery-capacity figure, while Apple documents a 100 m water-resistance rating and recreational scuba support to 40 m. Those figures come from different standards and manufacturer testing, so they are not a substitute for a controlled head-to-head test.

This comparison treats “Apple Watch Ultra” as Apple Watch Ultra 3, the model Apple identifies as introduced in 2025. Samsung’s product is the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 (the “2” is part of Samsung’s model name). Prices, cellular options and feature availability vary by country and should be checked on the regional product pages before you order.

What is being compared?

These are premium, large-format watches designed for outdoor use, fitness tracking and everyday smartwatch functions. The comparison uses Samsung’s official Galaxy Watch Ultra2 product information and compatibility announcement, plus Apple’s official Apple Watch Ultra 3 technical and water-resistance documentation. It is a specification comparison, not an independent laboratory review: no same-method battery endurance, GPS accuracy, screen legibility, health-sensor accuracy or diving test is established here.

Model Generation used in this comparison Case information stated by the manufacturer Operating-system and phone context
Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Samsung’s 2026 product and announcement materials 47 mm titanium smartwatch Wear OS 7; Android compatibility is specified by Samsung
Apple Watch Ultra 3 Introduced in 2025, according to Apple Support Titanium case; 49 × 44 × 12 mm Apple Watch; requires a compatible iPhone and current Apple software support

Samsung’s model name and Apple’s generation number are easy to confuse when shopping. Check the exact model identifier, case size, cellular status and regional listing rather than relying on a retailer’s shortened “Ultra” label.

Start with phone compatibility

Phone ecosystem is the first filter because neither watch is a universal accessory. A watch that cannot complete activation with your phone is not a practical bargain, regardless of its screen or dive rating.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 requirements

Samsung’s July 22, 2026 compatibility announcement specifies Android 13.0 or higher and more than 1.5 GB of device memory. Initial activation requires connecting the watch to a phone that supports Google Mobile Services. Samsung also warns that compatibility can vary by market, carrier and device brand. An Android version alone therefore does not guarantee that every handset will work.

Before buying, check that your phone is running Android 13 or later, has more than 1.5 GB of memory, includes Google Mobile Services and is supported in your country and by your carrier. A phone without Google Mobile Services can fail the initial activation requirement even if its Android version is new enough.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 requirements

Apple’s cited technical-specification page confirms the model but does not provide a universal minimum iPhone version in the material used for this comparison. Apple changes compatibility requirements as watchOS and iOS generations change. Use the current Apple regional specification and setup pages to confirm the minimum iPhone model, iOS version and any regional restrictions before purchase. Do not assume that an older iPhone will activate an Ultra 3 simply because it can run an earlier version of iOS.

Setup checklist

  1. Identify your everyday phone, not a spare phone that you rarely carry.
  2. For Galaxy Watch Ultra2, verify Android 13.0 or later, more than 1.5 GB of device memory and Google Mobile Services.
  3. For Apple Watch Ultra 3, verify the current Apple-published iPhone and software requirement for your country.
  4. Check carrier support if you want cellular service; a cellular-capable watch may still require an eligible plan and supported network.
  5. Confirm that the health, emergency, payment, navigation and communication features you care about are available in your country.

Durability and water use

Both watches are built for demanding outdoor activities, but their ratings describe different properties. Treat “water resistant” as a test condition and maintenance responsibility, not as a promise that a watch is permanently waterproof.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 protection

Samsung lists 10 ATM water protection, IP69K protection, MIL-STD-810H testing and EN13319 depth-gauge certification. Samsung’s product page advertises dive-ready use down to 130 feet. The 10 ATM, IP69K, MIL-STD-810H and EN13319 labels address different aspects of pressure, ingress, environmental exposure and diving equipment standards; they should not be collapsed into one generic “toughness” score.

The 130-foot figure is Samsung’s stated use limit. It is not evidence that every dive profile, temperature, impact or chemical exposure is safe, and it is not a controlled comparison with Apple’s depth figure.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 protection

Apple lists IP6X dust resistance and 100 m water resistance under ISO 22810:2010. Its specifications also list EN13319 recreational scuba diving to 40 m when used with a compatible third-party app. Apple’s water-resistance guidance emphasizes that Apple Watch Ultra and later are water resistant rather than waterproof, and that resistance can diminish over time.

Apple’s 100 m rating and 40 m recreational-scuba limit are not interchangeable numbers. The former is a water-resistance specification under ISO 22810:2010; the latter is the stated recreational scuba use case under EN13319. Follow Apple’s maintenance and activity guidance, and do not treat the 100 m laboratory rating as permission for every type of diving.

How to interpret the diving difference

Question Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Apple Watch Ultra 3
Published water-resistance description 10 ATM 100 m under ISO 22810:2010
Dust or ingress information IP69K IP6X dust resistance
Relevant diving standard EN13319 depth-gauge certification EN13319 recreational scuba to 40 m with a compatible third-party app
Advertised or specified depth Samsung advertises dive-ready use to 130 feet 40 m recreational scuba limit; 100 m is the ISO water-resistance rating
Waterproof claim Do not interpret the ratings as permanent waterproofing Apple explicitly describes the watch as water resistant, not waterproof

If you are choosing for swimming, surface water sports or occasional snorkeling, both product families publish substantial protection claims. If you plan recreational scuba, compare the stated limits and required apps, then follow the manufacturer’s activity, servicing and inspection guidance. Neither specification replaces dive training or a dive computer’s operational procedures.

Display visibility and navigation

Peak brightness

Samsung specifies up to 5,000 nits of peak display brightness for Galaxy Watch Ultra2. Apple specifies up to 3,000 nits for Apple Watch Ultra 3.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Display measure Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Apple Watch Ultra 3
Manufacturer-listed peak brightness Up to 5,000 nits Up to 3,000 nits
What the number establishes A Samsung-listed peak specification An Apple-listed peak specification
What it does not establish Identical outdoor legibility, average brightness, battery endurance at that brightness or performance in the same lighting conditions

On paper, Samsung has the higher peak-brightness figure. Peak values are not a standardized outdoor readability test: viewing angle, automatic brightness behavior, reflections, watch faces and battery state also affect what you see. If you spend long periods in direct sun, treat the figures as an indication of potential headroom rather than a measured winner.

GPS and outdoor positioning

Both manufacturers list dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS. Samsung identifies the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 system as L1+L5 dual-frequency GPS; Apple lists dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS for Ultra 3. The shared specification suggests that both are designed for more robust positioning in difficult environments than a single-frequency receiver, but no independent route or accuracy test is available here. Do not infer that one watch tracks a trail more accurately from the shared label alone.

Battery capacity and charging

What Samsung publishes

Samsung lists an 800 mAh battery capacity for Galaxy Watch Ultra2. Its product page also advertises fast charging of up to 40% in about 30 minutes. That charging figure is a manufacturer claim with Samsung’s stated conditions; it is not a same-method test against Apple.

What Apple publishes

The cited Apple Watch Ultra 3 technical specifications do not provide a battery capacity in milliamp-hours. Because Apple’s source does not state an mAh figure, Samsung’s 800 mAh number cannot be used to prove longer real-world battery life. Capacity, display behavior, GPS use, cellular radios, software and charging limits all affect endurance.

Battery evidence at a glance

Battery item Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Apple Watch Ultra 3
Published capacity 800 mAh Not stated in the cited Apple specifications
Published charging claim Up to 40% in about 30 minutes Not stated in the cited Apple specifications
Independent, identical-method endurance result Not established for this comparison

Choose based on your charging routine rather than the capacity number alone. Someone who wants a quick top-up before a workout may value Samsung’s stated 30-minute charging claim. Someone already charges an Apple device every night may prefer the convenience of staying within that ecosystem. Neither preference is an independently measured battery-life verdict.

Size, weight and fit

Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is presented by Samsung as a 47 mm titanium smartwatch. The cited Samsung material does not state complete case dimensions or a watch weight, so those values should not be guessed from the case-size label.

Apple lists Ultra 3 dimensions of 49 × 44 × 12 mm. Apple lists weight as 61.6 g for the natural finish and 61.8 g for the black finish. Those values describe the watch case as specified by Apple; band choice can change what the watch feels like on your wrist.

Fit specification Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Apple Watch Ultra 3
Case-size label 47 mm Not expressed as a single case-size label in the cited source
Published dimensions Not stated in the cited Samsung material 49 × 44 × 12 mm
Published weight Not stated in the cited Samsung material 61.6 g natural; 61.8 g black
Case material Titanium Titanium

Both are large watches. Measure your wrist, check the manufacturer’s band-size guidance and consider how a 12 mm-thick Apple case or a 47 mm Samsung case will fit beneath clothing and gloves. A larger case can improve readability but may move during sleep tracking or catch on equipment. The available specifications do not establish which watch is more comfortable.

Cellular service and regional availability

Cellular support is not a single worldwide configuration. The exact LTE model, supported bands, carrier activation process and emergency features depend on country and network. Samsung’s announcement explicitly warns that compatible devices may vary by market, carrier and device brand. Apple’s cellular requirements likewise need to be checked against the current regional Apple listing and your carrier.

Check these details before ordering

  • Whether the exact watch listing is GPS-only or cellular/LTE.
  • Whether your carrier supports the watch model and its activation method.
  • Whether the watch and phone must use the same carrier account or plan.
  • Whether emergency calling, location sharing, payments and health features are enabled in your country.
  • Whether a cellular watch costs more initially or requires a recurring wearable-plan fee.

Do not assume that a cellular watch provides independent service everywhere. A supported plan, network coverage and regional regulatory approval may all be required.

Price and what the published figures mean

Samsung’s US product page showed a starting price of $699.99 when accessed for this comparison on October 13, 2026. That is a volatile regional price and may change with configuration, promotions, tax, storage, cellular support or availability. Confirm the current US listing before publishing or buying: Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2 product page.

The Apple source used here is a technical-specification page, not a current price page. It does not establish an Apple Watch Ultra 3 price, so this comparison cannot honestly declare one model cheaper. Check Apple’s current regional store price for the same case, band and cellular configuration before comparing totals.

Which watch fits each type of buyer?

Choose Galaxy Watch Ultra2 when Android compatibility is decisive

  • Your primary phone meets Samsung’s Android 13.0-or-later, memory and Google Mobile Services activation requirements.
  • You want Samsung’s published 5,000-nit peak-brightness figure.
  • You value a stated 800 mAh capacity and Samsung’s up-to-40%-in-about-30-minutes charging claim.
  • You want Samsung’s listed 10 ATM, IP69K, MIL-STD-810H and EN13319 specifications in one device.
  • You are comfortable checking local carrier and feature support before selecting a cellular configuration.

Choose Apple Watch Ultra 3 when iPhone integration is decisive

  • Your everyday phone is an iPhone that meets Apple’s current Ultra 3 compatibility requirement.
  • You need Apple’s documented 100 m ISO 22810:2010 water-resistance rating and 40 m recreational-scuba specification.
  • You prefer the Apple ecosystem and want a watch designed around current Apple hardware and software support.
  • The 49 × 44 × 12 mm case and approximately 62 g listed weight suit your wrist and activities.
  • You have confirmed local cellular, emergency, health and payment availability.

Do not choose on one number alone

Samsung’s 5,000-nit peak is higher than Apple’s 3,000-nit peak, but those are not controlled readability measurements. Samsung’s 800 mAh capacity is published while Apple’s cited page omits capacity, but that does not prove longer runtime. Samsung’s 130-foot advertised dive-ready depth and Apple’s 40 m recreational-scuba specification use different descriptions and conditions. The meaningful decision is the complete fit: phone, activity, case, charging habits, regional support and price.

A practical buying process

  1. Lock the ecosystem. Write down the phone you will use for activation and daily notifications. Eliminate any watch that cannot pair with it.
  2. Verify software and services. Check Samsung’s Android, memory and Google Mobile Services requirements or Apple’s current iPhone requirement. Confirm that required health and emergency features are available locally.
  3. Match the activity. For swimming or surface sports, review the relevant water-resistance guidance. For scuba, compare the stated EN13319 use limits and required app support rather than treating ATM or 100 m as a dive-depth promise.
  4. Check physical fit. Compare the published dimensions and weight with your wrist, clothing and equipment. Treat Samsung’s 47 mm label as a large case and Apple’s 49 × 44 × 12 mm dimensions as a similarly substantial form factor.
  5. Plan charging. Decide whether Samsung’s stated 40%-in-about-30-minutes claim suits your routine. Do not estimate Apple’s runtime from Samsung’s mAh figure.
  6. Compare like-for-like prices. Use the same region, case material, band category, cellular status and taxes. Refresh Samsung’s volatile US price and obtain Apple’s current regional price.
  7. Confirm the return and service policy. Water resistance can diminish over time, and regional cellular or health support can change. Keep proof of the exact model and configuration.

Important limits of this comparison

Manufacturer specifications are useful for compatibility and stated design limits, but they are not independent comparative testing. The figures here do not establish which watch lasts longer on one charge, acquires GPS faster, reads better in every outdoor condition, measures health metrics more accurately or survives impacts better in real use.

Standards also need context. IP ratings describe ingress protection under defined tests; ATM and ISO water-resistance ratings are not a universal depth guarantee; EN13319 references equipment and diving requirements; and MIL-STD-810H indicates a set of environmental test methods rather than one overall durability score. Follow each manufacturer’s maintenance and activity guidance.

For current buying decisions, refresh the Samsung and Apple regional pages for price, availability, phone requirements, LTE support and feature access. Samsung’s compatibility announcement is available at Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Ultra2 announcement. Apple’s model specifications are at Apple Watch Ultra 3 technical specifications, and Apple’s water-resistance guidance is at Apple Watch water-resistance guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict

The right rugged smartwatch is determined first by the phone in your pocket. Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the logical candidate for a compatible Android setup, with Samsung-listed 5,000-nit peak brightness, 800 mAh capacity and broad protection specifications. Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the logical candidate for an iPhone setup, with Apple-documented 100 m ISO water resistance, 40 m recreational scuba support and a clearly specified 49 × 44 × 12 mm titanium case. If both ecosystems are available to you, compare your actual activity, wrist fit, charging routine and local price; the published specifications alone do not produce a defensible universal winner.
