If your Galaxy Watch3 is frozen, try a force restart first: it reboots the watch without erasing personal data. A factory reset is different—it returns the watch to default settings and may permanently delete data. Back up through Galaxy Wearable if you can still access the watch; if you cannot use its interface or have forgotten the PIN, Samsung documents a Watch3-specific reset through recovery mode.
Choose between a force restart and a factory reset
| Action | When to use it | Effect on data |
|---|---|---|
| Force restart | The watch is temporarily frozen or unresponsive. | Reboots the watch without erasing personal data. |
| Factory reset | You need to return the watch to default settings, or cannot regain access after forgetting its PIN or pattern. | May permanently remove data from the watch. |
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch restart guidance describes the force-restart method. The reset and recovery steps below come from Samsung Support US instructions for Galaxy Watch3. Menus and screens can vary by software version and region.
Restart a frozen Galaxy Watch3 without wiping it
- Press and hold the Home/Power key and Back key together.
- Keep holding them for at least seven seconds, until the screen turns off and the watch restarts.
This is a reboot, not a factory reset, so it does not erase personal data. If the watch remains accessible but the problem persists, consider backing it up before attempting a factory reset.

Back up what you can before a factory reset
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch backup guidance describes backing up through Galaxy Wearable on the connected phone and using a Samsung account on the watch. Back up before resetting if the watch is still usable.

Samsung lists supported backup content that includes preloaded-app data and settings, the installed-app list, watch-face settings, and system settings. Music stored on the watch cannot be backed up through this process. Music saved on the phone can be transferred to the watch manually.
Factory-reset the Galaxy Watch3 in recovery mode
Use this Watch3-specific sequence if you cannot use the ordinary watch interface, including when you have forgotten the lock PIN or pattern. Samsung says a reset is required to regain access in that situation. It warns that the reset returns the watch to default settings and can result in lost data.

- Unpair the current Bluetooth connection between the phone and watch to help avoid connection problems.
- Power the watch off, then turn it back on.
- As the watch starts, hold the Power and Back keys together until “Rebooting…” appears.
- Release both keys. Immediately press and release the Power key repeatedly to enter the Reboot Mode menu.
- Continue pressing the Power key until Recovery is highlighted. Hold the Power key to select Recovery, then release it when the screen goes dark.
- Wait for the factory reset and reboot to finish.
- When the Welcome screen appears, reconnect the watch through Galaxy Wearable and check for a software update.
These steps follow Samsung’s published Galaxy Watch3 recovery instructions. Do not substitute a different model’s button sequence: recovery controls can differ across watch models and software versions.
Reconnect the watch and restore LTE service
After the reset, start pairing from the watch’s Welcome screen in Galaxy Wearable, then check for a software update. If your Watch3 is an LTE model activated using a QR code, Samsung says you need a new QR code to reactivate service. Contact your carrier to obtain one; resetting the watch does not itself restore the cellular activation.

If the reset does not fix the problem
If the watch still malfunctions after the reset and software check, Samsung’s Watch3 support guidance directs users to service. A reset addresses software settings and access; it cannot establish that a persistent problem is fixed or identify a hardware fault.
