Samsung is the safer default if update longevity and security are your main priorities, but the logo alone does not determine support. Samsung’s longest promise—up to seven years of security updates—applies only to eligible Galaxy models. Motorola publishes support by exact model, family, region, and carrier; a premium Edge phone may be well supported while a budget Moto G has a much shorter term. Check the written schedule for the specific phone before you buy.

This guide compares Android-version upgrades, security-patch duration, delivery cadence, regional eligibility, hardware longevity, battery and repair considerations, resale uncertainty, and purchase price. It also shows how to calculate whether a cheaper Motorola remains better value for your own replacement timetable.

The practical verdict

For a buyer intending to keep a phone four years or longer, start with Samsung Galaxy models whose published support term covers the entire ownership period. Samsung announced in 2022 that selected Galaxy devices would receive up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. Samsung Mobile Security later stated that, from January 2024, support for some Galaxy devices extends to up to seven years. Those are ceilings, not guarantees for every Galaxy phone.

Motorola can be the better deal when its exact written schedule is long enough and its purchase price is materially lower. The range is wide: Android Central reported four Android OS generations and more than five years of security support for the Motorola Edge 70, while its 2026 report listed two OS upgrades and three years of security support for the Moto G Power 2025. Treat those figures as model examples and confirm the manufacturer’s schedule for your country and carrier.

What “Android updates” and “security support” actually mean

Major Android or One UI upgrades

A major upgrade changes the operating-system generation and usually adds system features, privacy controls, APIs, interface changes, and compatibility improvements. Samsung counts One UI and Android OS generations together in its published promise. A phone advertised with four generations normally receives four post-launch major upgrades, although the starting Android version and regional rollout determine the calendar dates.

Security updates

Security patches fix vulnerabilities in Android, the Linux kernel, device drivers, and vendor components. They do not necessarily add visible features. A phone can stop receiving major Android upgrades yet continue to receive security patches for months or years. That period is important for banking, work accounts, password managers, and any device that stores personal data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cadence is separate from duration

Two phones can both be supported for five years while receiving patches at different intervals. Samsung says eligible devices may be updated monthly, quarterly, or biannually, depending on the model. A quarterly or biannual schedule is not automatically a defect, but it means a newly disclosed vulnerability may wait longer for an official fix. Motorola warns that timing can vary by device and carrier.

How Samsung’s published policy has changed

The 2022 commitment

Samsung Electronics said in 2022 that it was extending support on select devices to “up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades” and “up to five years of security updates.” The words up to and select devices matter: the policy did not make every Galaxy model equivalent, and a lower-priced model could receive fewer generations.

The seven-year ceiling

Samsung Mobile Security states that, from January 2024, some Galaxy devices qualify for up to seven years of security-update support. This is a device-eligibility rule, not a blanket promise for the Galaxy brand. A model can have a seven-year security term while receiving fewer major Android generations, or it can have a shorter term if it is outside the eligible group.

What to verify on a Galaxy listing

  • The exact model name and storage variant, because similarly named phones can have different policies.
  • The number of promised Android or One UI generations, counted from the Android version installed at launch.
  • The security-support duration and whether it is measured from launch or another date.
  • Whether Samsung lists monthly, quarterly, or biannual security delivery for that model.
  • Your country and carrier, which can affect when an approved update becomes downloadable.

How Motorola’s policy works

Motorola publishes device-specific schedules and cautions that timing and carrier support can vary. That approach makes the model page or regional security page more important than a family slogan. An Edge device may have a substantially longer term than a Moto G released around the same time.

Premium example: Motorola Edge 70

Android Central reported in 2026 that the Motorola Edge 70 was promised four Android OS generations and more than five years of security updates. The report does not establish a calendar end date in every market, so use the manufacturer’s regional schedule to determine the final supported month for a phone you plan to buy.

Budget example: Moto G Power 2025

Android Central’s 2026 report listed two OS upgrades and three years of security support for the Moto G Power 2025. That can be adequate for a shorter ownership cycle, but it is a materially smaller safety margin than a seven-year Galaxy promise. If you expect to keep the phone beyond its third year, budget for replacement or choose a model with a longer written term.

Why Motorola promises must be checked individually

Motorola’s support can differ by model number, sales region, and carrier firmware. A phone bought unlocked may not follow the same release timing as a carrier edition. Before paying, record the exact support end date or term shown for your market; do not rely on a review of a similar-looking model.

Model-by-model comparison

The table uses examples reported by Android Central in 2026. Where a calendar date or launch Android version was not established, it is marked explicitly rather than inferred.

Moto G Power 2025 Not stated in the cited Android Central 2026 report Not stated in the cited Android Central 2026 report Two OS upgrades Three years Timing varies by model, region, and carrier

The table demonstrates why a single brand-wide ranking is misleading. The Galaxy A26’s six-generation OS promise exceeds the Moto G Power 2025’s two, while the Edge 70 sits between budget Motorola and the longest-supported Galaxy example. Verify all figures against the manufacturer’s current regional page before purchase because schedules can be revised or restricted to particular variants.

Will security patches continue after Android upgrades stop?

They can. Major-version support and security support are separate commitments. For example, a phone may receive its final Android upgrade in year three but remain on a security schedule until year five or seven. During that period, it can still receive vulnerability fixes without moving to a new Android generation.

Once the security-support term ends, the phone may continue to function, but newly discovered flaws are no longer covered by a promised vendor patch. Google Play system updates can still arrive on some devices, and individual applications may continue to support the installed Android version, but neither substitutes for full device-security maintenance. Avoid treating an app update or a Play Store update as proof that the manufacturer still supports the phone.

For a device used for payments, work authentication, health records, or sensitive accounts, set your replacement deadline before the final security month. If you must keep an unsupported phone temporarily, reduce exposure: install only essential apps, use a reputable password manager, enable screen lock and two-factor authentication, avoid sideloading, and do not use it for high-risk transactions when an alternative is available.

The Android Enterprise Recommended baseline

Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended requirements call for security updates for five years from the initial ship date and require manufacturers to disclose support information. This is an enterprise baseline for qualifying devices and deployment programs; it does not make every consumer Galaxy or Motorola phone identical. A consumer model can fall outside the program, have a different update cadence, or carry a different regional schedule.

If your employer requires Android Enterprise Recommended certification, check the exact device entry and ship-date calculation rather than assuming that a five-year enterprise requirement applies to every phone sold under the same family name.

Why region and carrier eligibility change the experience

Regional firmware

Manufacturers approve software by market. A feature or patch can be available in one country before another because of regulatory testing, modem certification, language packages, or local operator requirements. The support term may be global while the delivery date is regional.

Carrier approval

Carrier editions can require additional testing and certification. That can delay an otherwise released update. Motorola explicitly notes that timing and carrier support can vary; Samsung also distributes updates through different operator channels. An unlocked model may receive a release on a different date from a carrier-branded model.

How to check your own phone

  1. Open Settings and choose About phone to record the complete model number, not only the marketing name.
  2. Open Settings > Software update and note the last security-update date and the available update channel.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s security-update page for your country and search the exact model number.
  4. Compare the promised end date with your intended ownership period and save a copy of the schedule or listing.
  5. If you use a carrier version, ask the carrier whether its firmware follows the manufacturer’s schedule and whether bootloader or region restrictions apply.

Long-term value goes beyond update counts

Hardware that can survive the term

A long software promise has value only if the hardware remains usable. Compare the display’s durability, water resistance, storage capacity, modem bands, camera performance, and processor headroom for the apps you expect to use later. A phone that is technically supported but too slow, full, or physically damaged may be replaced before its final patch.

Battery aging

Battery capacity declines with charge cycles, heat, and time. A larger initial battery does not prove a longer service life. Look for an accessible service network and a realistic battery-replacement option in your country. Replacing a worn battery can extend the useful life of a well-supported phone; the exact labor and part price depends on the model and region.

Repairability and parts

Check whether screens, batteries, charging ports, and back covers are available through authorized repair channels. A fragile design or scarce parts can erase the economic advantage of a lower purchase price. Water resistance can also be reduced after a repair unless the device is resealed and tested correctly.

Resale value

Longer support may make a phone easier to resell because the next owner has more secure-use time left. However, no current primary statistic establishes that Samsung or Motorola always delivers higher resale value or lower total cost of ownership. Condition, storage, local demand, trade-in promotions, and carrier lock status often matter more than the logo. Treat resale as a possible benefit, not a guaranteed percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Purchase price and replacement frequency

A cheaper phone can be better value if it meets your needs and its support term covers the period you will keep it. Conversely, a modestly higher price for a longer-supported model may avoid an early replacement. Compare the purchase price, expected years of secure use, likely battery service, accessories, and any resale proceeds rather than comparing sticker prices alone.

A step-by-step buying method

  1. Set the ownership horizon. Decide whether you expect two, three, five, or seven years of use. Include the date when you need the phone to remain safe for banking and work.
  2. List acceptable models. Record the exact Galaxy and Motorola model numbers, storage versions, unlocked or carrier status, and country of sale.
  3. Write down the OS promise. Count post-launch Android or One UI generations, and note the Android version installed at launch if the manufacturer states it.
  4. Write down the security promise. Record the final month or the number of years, plus whether the term starts at initial ship date or another stated event.
  5. Check cadence. Note monthly, quarterly, biannual, or unspecified delivery. For Motorola, note any carrier qualification language.
  6. Check hardware life. Compare storage, processor, battery service, repair parts, water resistance, and network compatibility for your market.
  7. Calculate secure-use cost. Divide the purchase price minus realistic resale proceeds by the number of years before security support ends. Keep battery and repair costs as separate line items.
  8. Confirm at checkout. Recheck the manufacturer’s page on the purchase date; do not rely on an older review or a neighboring model’s promise.

Decision guide by buyer type

Your priority What to favor Why What to verify
Maximum security longevity An eligible Galaxy with the seven-year term Samsung’s published ceiling is the longest stated in these examples Exact model eligibility, start date, and regional cadence
Long support at a lower upfront price A Motorola Edge model with a written five-year-plus term The Edge 70 example combines four OS generations with more than five years of security support Regional schedule, carrier timing, and actual sale price
Lowest purchase price Budget model only if its support term matches your horizon A low price is less useful if replacement is required soon Final security year, storage, battery service, and repair cost
Enterprise deployment A device listed for Android Enterprise Recommended The program requires five years of security updates from initial ship date for qualifying devices Exact certification entry and employer policy
Frequent feature upgrades The model with the higher stated OS-generation count More generations extend access to newer Android features Whether the count is an upper limit and when the phone launched

Common pitfalls and fixes

Confusing a family promise with a model promise

Symptom: A salesperson says the brand supports phones for seven years. Fix: Ask for the exact model’s security end date and OS-generation count in writing.

Using the launch year as the support end date without checking the start rule

Symptom: You add a number of years to the announcement date. Fix: Use the manufacturer’s stated starting point, which may be initial ship date or another defined date.

Assuming every patch arrives monthly

Symptom: A phone receives updates less often than a flagship. Fix: Check whether the model is on a quarterly or biannual schedule and decide if that cadence fits your risk tolerance.

Buying an imported or carrier-specific variant

Symptom: The model name matches, but the update page does not recognize the model number. Fix: Confirm regional firmware, bands, warranty, and support eligibility before opening the box.

Ignoring storage and battery wear

Symptom: The phone remains supported but feels unusable after a few years. Fix: Buy sufficient storage, plan for a battery replacement, and check repair availability before purchase.

How to compare total ownership value yourself

Use a simple worksheet for each candidate:

  • Net purchase cost: price paid minus a conservative resale or trade-in estimate.
  • Secure-use years: years from purchase until the stated security-support end date.
  • Annual secure-use cost: net purchase cost divided by secure-use years.
  • Likely service costs: battery, screen, charging-port, case, and repair expenses you would actually pay.
  • Replacement buffer: subtract months when the phone may be unsupported before you can replace it.

This calculation does not predict resale prices or failure rates. It makes the trade-off visible: a more expensive Galaxy may cost less per secure year, while an inexpensive Motorola may win if its support term and purchase discount are strong enough.

Bottom line

Choose Samsung Galaxy when your first requirement is the longest, clearest security runway, and select a model whose seven-year eligibility is explicitly confirmed. Choose Motorola when the exact Edge or other model offers a written support term that covers your planned ownership and the lower price outweighs any shorter runway. For either brand, verify the model number, region, carrier status, OS-upgrade count, security end date, and cadence before buying. The phone with the best long-term value is the one whose hardware, repair options, price, and documented support all fit the years you actually intend to use it.
