For current premium phones, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel are effectively tied on promised support length. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series promises seven generations of Android/One UI upgrades and seven years of security updates from its global launch. Google promises seven years of operating-system and security updates for Pixel 8 and later, counted from each phone’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States.

Pixel is the safer choice if your priority is receiving Google’s Android releases and Pixel feature drops through the most direct update channel. Galaxy can match the duration on explicitly covered models, but delivery timing and eligibility vary more by model, carrier and market.

The short answer: Pixel has the cleaner update path, while Galaxy now matches its top-end lifespan

There is no universal winner on support duration. At the flagship level, both brands offer a seven-year headline promise, but they define the starting point differently and deliver updates through different channels.

  • Choose Pixel 8 or later if you want Google’s Android releases, security patches and Pixel Drops delivered through a tightly integrated Google update system.
  • Choose Galaxy S25 or another Samsung model explicitly listed for seven years if you prefer Samsung hardware, One UI and Galaxy-specific features, and are willing to check the exact regional and carrier variant.
  • Do not assume every Galaxy or Pixel has the newest policy. Older generations have shorter support windows, and the support clock starts at first availability or launch rather than when you personally buy remaining stock.

The practical difference is therefore less about “seven years versus fewer years” for current flagships and more about certainty: Pixel’s policy is easier to interpret, while Samsung’s coverage and release timing require more model-specific checking.

What “better updates” actually means

Update quality has several independent parts. A phone can have a long security commitment but receive major Android releases later than another phone, or receive the operating system promptly while missing a feature that needs special hardware.

Measure What to ask Why it matters
Support duration How many years of updates are promised, and from which date? This determines the likely end of official software support.
Major OS upgrades How many Android or One UI generations are included? Major upgrades add system behavior, privacy controls and platform features.
Security-patch coverage Until when will vulnerabilities receive official fixes? Security support protects accounts, payments and data after novelty features stop mattering.
Delivery speed How quickly does a release reach your model, country and carrier? A long promise is less useful if important fixes arrive late.
Model eligibility Does the policy apply to this exact model and variant? Brand-wide slogans can hide shorter terms for older or cheaper devices.
Feature availability Will every new feature work on the phone? Some functions depend on processor capability, sensors, memory or regional services.
Physical longevity Can the battery and other hardware remain usable for the software term? Seven years of software has limited value if the phone cannot be kept in service.

Official support commitments compared

The following table separates the published policies instead of treating every device in a brand’s catalogue as equivalent.

Device group Operating-system commitment Security commitment Support clock Important qualification
Google Pixel 8 and later Seven years of OS updates Seven years of security updates From first availability on the Google Store in the United States Pixel Drops may add or upgrade features, but the policy does not promise every feature on every model for the whole period.
Google Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold generations Five years of updates as listed in Google’s support policy Based on Google’s published device-support terms These generations do not receive the newer seven-year term.
Google Pixel 5a and earlier No longer receive Android or security updates Support has ended A device can still function, but it no longer receives official platform or security maintenance.
Samsung Galaxy S25 series Seven generations of OS upgrades Seven years of security updates From the global launch date Samsung says timing may vary by device model, network provider and market.
Selected Samsung Galaxy devices under the current policy Up to seven years where explicitly listed Up to seven years where explicitly listed Device-specific Samsung’s security documentation says update frequency may be monthly, quarterly or biannual depending on the device.
Selected Samsung Galaxy devices covered by the February 2022 policy Up to four generations of One UI/Android OS upgrades Up to five years Device-specific This older promise should not be used to describe current seven-year models.

Samsung’s “up to” wording is important: the seven-year maximum applies to selected devices, not automatically to every Galaxy phone released in the same period. Before buying, find the exact model in Samsung’s support schedule or product documentation.

How the seven-year clocks are calculated

Neither company starts counting from the day you open the box. Google starts the Pixel 8-and-later term when that model first became available on the Google Store in the US. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 wording starts at the global launch date.

Rank #2
Google Pixel 7-5G Android Phone - Unlocked Smartphone with Wide Angle Lens and 24-Hour Battery - 256GB - Lemongrass
  • Google Pixel 7 is powered by Google Tensor G2; it’s faster, more efficient, and more secure, with the best photo and video quality yet on Pixel[1].Other camera description:Front,Rear.Bluetooth Version 5.2 with dual antennas for enhanced quality and connection.
  • Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[3]
  • The 6.3-inch Pixel 7 display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[4]
  • Google Pixel 7 has wide and ultrawide lenses with up to 8x Super Res Zoom[5]; and Cinematic Blur brings more drama to your videos

That distinction matters when buying discounted inventory. A phone sold two years after its launch does not gain a fresh seven-year term. To estimate remaining support, identify the model’s first-availability or global-launch date, add the promised term, and subtract the time already elapsed.

  1. Identify the exact model name and generation. “Galaxy S25” and “Galaxy A-series” do not have interchangeable policies, and “Pixel 8” is covered by a different term from older Pixel generations.
  2. Identify the sales variant. Record the country, carrier version and storage or regional model number when available.
  3. Find the official start date. Use Google’s first US Google Store availability for a Pixel 8-or-later calculation, or Samsung’s global launch date for Galaxy S25.
  4. Apply the policy for that device. Keep OS-upgrade generations and security years as separate numbers; seven OS generations is not a promise that every Android release will arrive on a fixed annual day.
  5. Check remaining physical life. A used phone may have several years of software support left but need a battery replacement immediately.

Which brand delivers Android updates faster?

Google has the more direct release path because Pixel hardware and the Android platform come from the same company. That makes Pixel the safer recommendation for readers who want Google’s Android releases and Feature Drops with minimal translation between the platform and the phone maker.

That does not mean every Pixel update appears simultaneously for every owner. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and can depend on the operator and device. A staged rollout can delay an update even when Google has announced it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung also publishes major updates in waves. Its Galaxy S25 announcement specifically warns that timing may vary by device model, network provider and market. A carrier-branded phone may therefore receive the same underlying release on a different schedule from an unlocked version or a phone sold in another country.

Google Pixel 8 - Unlocked Android Smartphone with Advanced Pixel Camera, 24-Hour Battery, and Powerful Security - Obsidian - 128 GB
  • Pixel 8 is the helpful phone engineered by Google; the new Google Tensor G3 chip is custom-designed with Google AI for cutting-edge photo and video features and smarter ways to help[1]
  • Unlocked Android 5G phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Google Pixel 8 has a fully upgraded camera with advanced image processing to reveal vivid colors and striking details; and now with Macro Focus, even the smallest subjects can become spectacular images
  • The 6.2-inch Pixel 8 Actua display is super sharp, with rich, vivid colors; it’s fast and responsive for smoother gaming, scrolling, and moving between apps[3,4]
  • Pixel’s Adaptive Battery can last over 24 hours; when Extreme Battery Saver is turned on, it can last up to 72 hours[5]; and it charges faster than ever[6]

No official cross-brand dataset establishes an average number of days by which Pixel updates arrive faster than Samsung updates. Treat “Pixel is faster” as a description of the update path and predictability, not as a guaranteed number of days for every release.

Major Android upgrades, security patches and Feature Drops are different

Major operating-system upgrades

A major OS upgrade changes the Android platform and, on Samsung phones, the One UI layer built on it. Samsung’s seven-generation statement counts OS generations; Google’s Pixel policy promises seven years of OS updates. Neither statement means that every future feature will run identically on every supported model.

Security updates

Security updates address vulnerabilities and can be more important than a visually obvious Android release. Samsung’s security documentation groups supported devices into monthly, quarterly or biannual delivery schedules. The schedule is device-specific, so a seven-year security maximum does not imply monthly patches for the entire seven-year period.

Pixel Drops and model-dependent features

Google’s seven-year wording includes ongoing Feature Drops, but Google also qualifies that support: a new or upgraded feature may require hardware, memory, sensors, a particular region or a supported service. A Pixel can remain fully supported while another Pixel receives a feature that it cannot technically run.

Older phones are where the brands diverge most

Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold

Google lists the Pixel 6, Pixel 7 and Fold families at five years of updates. They remain materially better supported than Pixel 5a and earlier, but they do not inherit the seven-year term introduced with Pixel 8 and later.

Pixel 5a and earlier

Pixel 5a and earlier models no longer receive Android or security updates. If you are buying one used, price it as an unsupported device and do not treat a low purchase price as compensation for the missing security maintenance.

Samsung models from the previous policy era

Samsung’s February 2022 announcement promised selected Galaxy devices up to four generations of One UI/Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. Samsung later extended support by up to seven years for selected devices, but the newer maximum does not retroactively apply to every older Galaxy phone.

Carrier and regional variants can change the experience

Two phones with the same retail name can differ in modem firmware, carrier testing and regional software. Before purchase, check:

  • Whether the phone is carrier-branded, unlocked or imported.
  • Whether the manufacturer lists that exact regional model in its support schedule.
  • Whether the intended carrier supports the device’s update channel.
  • Whether the phone is receiving updates through the manufacturer, the carrier or both.
  • Whether a used phone has already spent part of its support term in another market.

Google’s gradual Pixel rollout and Samsung’s model/provider/market qualification are reasons to judge update timing at the variant level, not only by brand reputation.

Hardware longevity: software support is only half the equation

A seven-year policy is a software promise, not a guarantee that every component will last seven years without service. Battery capacity declines with use, charging ports and displays can fail, and repair parts or labor may determine whether keeping an older phone is sensible.

When comparing a long-term purchase, look for a model with a battery that can be replaced by a qualified repair provider, a design you are comfortable maintaining and a condition that leaves room for future service. For a used phone, request battery-health information, inspect the display and cameras, test the charging connection, and confirm that the device is not locked to a former owner or carrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not convert the support promise into a guaranteed resale value. A phone may receive security patches while its battery, storage capacity or app performance no longer meets your needs.

Which phone should you buy?

Your priority Better fit Reason What to verify
Fast access to Google’s Android releases Pixel 8 or later Google controls the Pixel hardware and Android update channel. Country, carrier rollout and the model’s first US Google Store availability.
Seven years with Samsung’s interface and ecosystem Galaxy S25 or another explicitly covered seven-year Galaxy The current flagship promise matches Pixel’s headline duration. Exact model, regional variant, carrier and Samsung’s listed eligibility.
Lowest purchase price on an older phone A supported older Pixel or Galaxy, after calculating remaining years A discount can make sense when you understand how much support has already elapsed. Original launch or availability date, remaining security term and battery condition.
Buying a Pixel 5a or earlier Neither, unless you accept an unsupported device Those models no longer receive official Android or security updates. Whether the phone is suitable only for low-risk, limited use.
Predictable monthly security maintenance Whichever exact model is listed on a monthly schedule Update cadence is device-specific; brand alone does not establish monthly delivery. Manufacturer security bulletin and the device’s schedule.

How to verify an update promise before checkout

  1. Write down the complete product identifier. Include generation, model number, carrier and country instead of relying on a retailer’s shortened name.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s support page. Confirm both the OS-upgrade term and security-update term; they may not be identical.
  3. Locate the start date. For Pixel 8 and later, use first US Google Store availability. For Galaxy S25, use the global launch date.
  4. Check the delivery schedule. Note whether the device is monthly, quarterly or biannual for security firmware, and whether the carrier controls approval.
  5. Check feature qualifications. A supported phone may not receive every Pixel Drop or hardware-dependent function.
  6. Record the result. Save the support-page wording and date so you can distinguish a documented promise from a retailer description.

Common mistakes that lead to bad update decisions

  • Counting from your purchase date. Support begins at the manufacturer’s defined availability or launch date.
  • Assuming a brand-wide guarantee. Samsung’s seven-year maximum covers selected devices, and Google’s seven-year Pixel term starts with Pixel 8.
  • Equating OS generations with security-patch frequency. A device can receive long-term security maintenance on a monthly, quarterly or biannual schedule.
  • Assuming a new Android version means every new feature. Hardware, region and service requirements can limit feature availability.
  • Ignoring the carrier variant. Network-provider testing and regional firmware can change delivery timing.
  • Buying unsupported stock because it is cheap. Pixel 5a and earlier no longer receive official Android or security updates.
  • Using an average delay claim as a guarantee. There is no established cross-brand average that predicts the delivery date for your specific phone and country.

Bottom line for long-term buyers

For the current premium generations, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel have reached parity on the headline support period: seven years for the Galaxy S25 series and Pixel 8 and later, subject to their different start dates and eligibility rules.

Pixel remains the straightforward recommendation when update immediacy, Google’s Android releases and Feature Drops matter most. Galaxy is equally defensible when you prefer One UI and Samsung hardware, provided you verify that the exact model and regional/carrier variant is one of the devices covered for seven years. In either case, calculate support from first availability or launch, then weigh battery and repair condition before treating a long software promise as a long ownership guarantee.
