Most newer Samsung Galaxy phones use USB-C, but not every Samsung phone does. Galaxy S8 and later S generations, many Galaxy Z, Note8 and later listed Note models, and numerous Galaxy A phones are listed by Samsung with a USB Type-C port. Older models such as the Galaxy S5, S6, S7, Note5, Galaxy A6, and several Galaxy J phones use Micro USB Type-B instead.
The connector determines whether a cable physically fits. It does not, by itself, prove a phone’s charging speed, fast-charging support, data capability, or compatibility with every charger. Identify the exact model before buying a replacement cable or wall charger.
What USB-C means on a Samsung phone
USB-C, also called USB Type-C, is the small, oval connector used on many recent Galaxy phones. Samsung describes its USB-C cable as suitable for charging a phone and connecting it to a computer. The plug is reversible, so either side can face up when you insert it.
That physical convenience is separate from electrical performance. A USB-C-shaped plug can fit a phone while the phone, cable, charger, or charging protocol limits the result. Samsung’s charging guidance therefore tells users to check the device model and the compatible charger rather than infer a charging rate from the connector alone.

USB-C is a connector standard, not a speed promise
Two phones can both have USB-C ports and support different charging behavior. The supported charger, the phone’s model-specific charging circuitry, and the cable all matter. Samsung’s published guidance does not establish one universal charging rate for all USB-C Galaxy devices, so a USB-C cable should never be advertised as automatically delivering the phone’s maximum speed.
What you can normally use the port for
- Charging the phone with a compatible wall charger and cable.
- Connecting the phone to a computer for supported data or file-transfer functions.
- Using the reversible plug without orienting it in a particular direction.
The exact charging features and computer functions remain model-dependent. A port that accepts USB-C does not establish a particular USB data generation or a specific fast-charge wattage.
Which Samsung Galaxy phones use USB-C?
Samsung Canada’s support list provides model examples rather than a claim that every regional or special-edition handset is covered. The following families and models are identified there as USB Type-C.

| Galaxy line | USB-C examples listed by Samsung |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S | S8, S9, S10, S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, and S25 families |
| Galaxy Z | Listed Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip families |
| Galaxy Note | Note8, Note9, and Note10 families |
| Galaxy A | A13, A14 5G, A15 5G, A23 5G, A25 5G, A32 5G, A42 5G, A51, A52 5G, A53 5G, and A54 5G |
The list is useful for identifying broad adoption, not for replacing a model check. A family name may cover several generations, regional variants, or carrier editions. If a model is not shown in the list, confirm its specifications or inspect the port before ordering accessories.
Galaxy S phones
Samsung lists the Galaxy S8 through the S25 families in its USB Type-C examples. This means a phone labeled S8, S9, S10, S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, or S25 is generally a USB-C candidate, subject to the exact model and market. The list does not support a universal claim about every S-branded phone ever sold.
Galaxy Z foldables
Samsung’s examples include listed Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip generations. Because the support page groups these as families, use the model name shown in the phone’s settings or on its packaging when checking a particular foldable.

Samsung identifies numerous A-series models as USB Type-C, including A13, A14 5G, A15 5G, A23 5G, A25 5G, A32 5G, A42 5G, A51, A52 5G, A53 5G, and A54 5G. The presence of both USB-C and Micro USB examples in the wider A line makes the exact model especially important.
Which older Samsung phones use Micro USB?
Samsung’s support examples for Micro USB Type-B include the following models:
| Samsung model examples | Connector listed by Samsung |
|---|---|
| Galaxy S5, S6, S6 edge, S7, and S7 edge | Micro USB Type-B |
| Galaxy Note5 | Micro USB Type-B |
| Galaxy A6 | Micro USB Type-B |
| Galaxy J3 and J7 models | Micro USB Type-B |
These examples show why “Samsung phone” is not a sufficient description when buying a cable. A Micro USB phone needs a cable with a Micro USB device connector; a USB-C plug will not fit its port. Conversely, a Micro USB cable cannot be inserted into a USB-C phone without a suitable, model-appropriate adapter, and an adapter does not change the phone’s supported charging behavior.
Why generation-based shortcuts fail
Connector changes did not occur at one single, universal date across every Samsung line. Some S and Note generations switched earlier than others, while A and J models span different connector eras. Regional and special-edition variations can also complicate a family-level rule. Treat the model number, not the marketing family, as the deciding detail.

- Open Settings on the phone.
- Scroll to and select About phone.
- Read the displayed device name and model number.
- Use that complete model identity when checking Samsung’s charger and connector information or when purchasing a cable.
Do not rely only on a shortened name such as “A-series” or “S-series.” Record the model number exactly, including letters, numbers, and any regional suffix. If the phone cannot be turned on, check its original box, purchase record, or the label supplied with the handset; then verify the model against Samsung’s support information.
Inspecting the port as a quick physical check
A USB-C port is generally symmetrical and accepts the reversible USB-C plug in either orientation. Micro USB has a different, tapered shape and requires the plug to be aligned correctly. A visual inspection can help distinguish the two, but use the model number for a purchase decision when the port is damaged, obstructed, or difficult to see.
Do not force a connector
If a plug does not slide in with light, even pressure, stop. Reversing a Micro USB plug will not make it fit a USB-C port, and forcing either connector can damage the phone’s port or the cable. Remove lint only with a safe, non-metal method appropriate for electronics; do not treat resistance as evidence that a different cable standard is required.
Choosing the right cable for a USB-C Galaxy phone
For a phone confirmed to have USB-C, select a cable with a USB-C connector at the phone end. Samsung says this type of cable can be used for charging and for connecting the phone to a computer. The connector’s reversibility makes insertion easier, but it does not specify charging speed.
Match both ends to your equipment
The phone end and the charger or computer end may use different connector shapes. A cable can therefore have USB-C at the phone end and another connector at the power-adapter or computer end. Select the arrangement that matches the ports you actually have. Do not assume that a USB-C-to-USB-C cable is required for every Galaxy phone, or that another arrangement is universally supported.
Choose for the charging feature you need
First confirm the handset’s supported charging feature. Then choose a compatible charger and cable combination. Samsung’s guidance is model-specific; the same cable shape can be used with phones that have different charging limits. If your goal is the fastest supported charging, verify the phone and charger specifications together rather than buying solely by the words “USB-C.”

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Computer connections
A USB-C cable can connect a compatible Galaxy phone to a computer. The phone may ask you to select a USB mode after connection. The available modes and transfer performance depend on the device and software, so the existence of a USB-C port should not be presented as proof of a particular data rate.
Samsung’s adapter caution
Samsung’s support guidance cautions against using a dual USB-C adapter with its Galaxy phone or tablet. Follow the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for the specific handset and accessory rather than assuming that every USB-C adapter is suitable.
USB-C charging: what determines speed?
Charging speed is the result of an agreement among the phone, charger, cable, and supported charging technology. The connector is only the physical interface. Samsung’s wall-charger guidance specifically directs users to check the device model and compatible charger, which is why a generic USB-C label cannot establish a charging rate.
Factors that can limit charging
- Phone model: each handset has its own supported charging behavior.
- Charger: the adapter must provide a charging mode the phone supports.
- Cable: cable construction and ratings can affect whether the intended mode is available.
- Condition and temperature: the phone may regulate charging under conditions that require protection.
- Use while charging: active applications, screen use, or other loads can reduce the net charging rate.
These factors mean that replacing a Micro USB cable with a USB-C cable is not, by itself, a speed upgrade. On a USB-C Galaxy phone, use the charger and cable combination Samsung identifies as compatible with that exact model.
What you can safely say about fast charging
You can say that a USB-C Galaxy phone may support a Samsung-defined fast-charging feature when Samsung lists that feature for the model and the paired charger is compatible. You cannot infer the feature, its rate, or its maximum power from the USB-C connector alone. The official material available for this guide does not establish one universal rate for all USB-C Galaxy phones.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the phone. In Settings, open About phone and record the device name and model number.
- Confirm the connector. Match the model to Samsung’s USB Type-C or Micro USB information; use the port’s shape only as a secondary check.
- Decide the use. Choose whether you need charging, computer connection, or both.
- Check the charger requirement. Look up the charging feature supported by the exact phone and select a compatible wall charger.
- Match the cable ends. Ensure the phone-side connector and the charger or computer-side connector fit your equipment.
- Test gently. The plug should seat without force, and the phone should show a charging or connection response.
Keep the model information with the accessory purchase record. It makes later replacements easier and prevents a family-level assumption from sending you back to the wrong connector.

Troubleshooting a Samsung USB-C charging problem
The cable does not fit
Stop pushing the plug. Recheck the phone’s model in Settings and compare the port with the cable end. A Micro USB model needs a Micro USB cable, while a USB-C model needs a USB-C phone-side connector. Inspect the port for visible debris or damage and try a known-compatible cable if available.
The phone fits the cable but charges slowly
USB-C compatibility confirms the physical connection, not the charging rate. Verify that the wall charger is compatible with the phone’s model and that the cable is appropriate for the intended charging feature. Test without intensive phone use and check whether the device is unusually warm. If the behavior remains abnormal with compatible equipment, consult Samsung service guidance rather than assuming the connector is defective.
The phone charges but will not connect to a computer
Confirm that the cable supports a computer connection, not only power, and that the phone is unlocked. Try another USB port or compatible cable, then inspect the phone’s USB notification for an available connection mode. Since Samsung describes USB-C cables as usable for charging or computer connection, a charging-only cable may not provide the data path you need.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The connection is intermittent
Check for lint, a loose port, a damaged cable, or strain at the connector. A USB-C plug should sit securely without being forced. If multiple known-compatible cables disconnect, the phone’s port may need professional inspection.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every Samsung phone is USB-C: older S, Note, A, and J examples use Micro USB.
- Buying by family name only: different generations within one line can use different connectors.
- Equating USB-C with fast charging: the phone and charger determine supported charging behavior.
- Using a cable that merely fits: physical fit does not establish data support or the desired charging mode.
- Forcing a plug: resistance indicates a mismatch, obstruction, or damage that should be investigated.
- Expecting one universal adoption date: Samsung provides model lists, not a single year when every phone changed connector.
What Samsung’s published information does—and does not—establish
Samsung’s support material establishes model-level connector examples and practical guidance for identifying a phone and choosing a compatible charger. It does not publish a single USB-C adoption percentage in the material used here, nor does it identify one universal transition date for the entire Samsung phone range.
That distinction matters when comparing phones or buying accessories. A statement such as “all modern Samsung phones use USB-C” is broader than the published model lists support. A more accurate conclusion is that USB-C is standard across many newer Galaxy families, while older and some model-specific devices still require Micro USB.
Bottom line for cable and charger purchases
Check Settings > About phone, record the exact model number, and then match three things: the connector, the phone’s supported charging feature, and the charger’s compatibility. If the model is among Samsung’s listed S8-and-later S families, listed Z Fold or Z Flip generations, listed Note8-and-later models, or the cited USB-C A-series phones, a USB-C cable is the expected choice. If it is an S5, S6, S7, Note5, A6, or listed J3/J7 example, use Micro USB instead.
