A Galaxy that will not update is usually facing one of two different problems: the update has not been released to that exact device, carrier and region, or an available update cannot download or install. Check the phone’s software-update screen and the carrier that originally sold it before treating the problem as a firmware fault. If an update is offered, use stable Wi‑Fi, adequate charge and internal storage; if the on-device process still fails, try Samsung Smart Switch on a computer. A phone that will not boot normally after a failed update needs Samsung or authorized service to reflash it.
Identify what “not updating” actually means
The phrase “my Samsung Galaxy is not updating” can describe several unrelated situations. The correct fix depends on which one you have:
- No update is listed: the phone says it is current, or the update screen offers nothing.
- The download never starts: the update is visible, but tapping the download option produces no progress.
- The download stops: the progress bar pauses, an error appears, or a notification says the file is incomplete.
- Installation fails: the package downloads but the installation stops or reports an error.
- The phone will not boot afterward: it remains on a logo or otherwise cannot start normally after the failed update.
First check the installed software so that support staff and your carrier can identify the exact device. On the phone, open Settings, then About phone (or About tablet), and open Software information. Samsung notes that menu names and locations vary by model and software version, so use the equivalent labels shown on your device. Record the model and software/baseband information before retrying an update.

Why a Galaxy update may not appear
Carrier-controlled release timing
Galaxy updates are distributed through carriers as well as Samsung. A release for one carrier is not proof that the same update is available for every carrier, country or model. A carrier-branded phone can therefore remain without an update while another version of the same Galaxy already has it.

An unlocked phone can still be tied to its original sales channel for update delivery. If it was originally sold by a carrier, that carrier may remain relevant even after the phone is unlocked. Samsung says that a SIM from the original carrier may be required in some cases. Ask that carrier about the exact model and region rather than relying on reports about a similar-looking device.
Updates arrive in waves
Newly released firmware may be offered progressively instead of to every eligible phone at once. If the carrier confirms that your model is included but the update is not listed, check again later. Do not infer that the phone is damaged simply because another owner received the package first.
Eligibility cannot be inferred from the model name alone
Update eligibility depends on the complete model number, original carrier, country or region and software state. General support pages do not establish a universal release calendar for every Galaxy phone and tablet. Confirm those details with the original carrier or Samsung before attempting unofficial firmware procedures.
Prepare the phone before retrying
When the update is available, remove the common obstacles before starting another attempt:

- Use a reliable Wi‑Fi connection. Some carriers require Wi‑Fi for an update, and Samsung’s regional instructions recommend it. Avoid a connection that repeatedly drops while the package is downloading.
- Charge the device sufficiently. Samsung’s instructions require a sufficiently charged battery, but the exact guidance varies by device and region. Follow the level or charging instruction shown on your phone.
- Check internal storage. The update needs space to download and unpack. If the phone reports insufficient storage, free at least the amount it specifies, then retry.
- Read the notification after an interruption. Samsung says a partial download may be resumed from its notification. Use that resume option when it appears instead of starting an unrelated troubleshooting procedure.
- Keep the device available while it works. Do not interrupt an installation, remove power or deliberately disconnect a computer connection during the update.
There is no single storage or battery threshold that applies to every Galaxy model. The device’s own message is the authoritative requirement for that installation.
Fix an update that is missing
- Open the software-update screen. In Settings, select the entry for software updates; the wording and location can differ by model, carrier and software version.
- Check the installed version. Use Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information and note the model and baseband details.
- Contact the original carrier. Ask whether the specific model, carrier variant and region have received the release. If the device was originally carrier-sold and is now unlocked, ask whether an original-carrier SIM is required for the check.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and check again. This satisfies carrier requirements that do not allow a cellular connection for the update check or download.
- Allow for a staged rollout. If the carrier confirms a recent release, check again later rather than repeatedly forcing the check.
- Try Smart Switch on a computer. Samsung’s desktop software can show an update when the phone is connected by USB, but it only helps if Smart Switch has an update available for that device.
Some carriers also provide their own computer-based update tools. Use a carrier tool only when that carrier confirms it supports your model; a generic tool cannot bypass carrier eligibility.
Fix download and installation failures
When storage is the error
A storage message is actionable: remove enough data to meet the amount requested in the message. Start with large downloads, videos or apps you can restore later, then reopen the software-update screen. The relevant limit is the free internal space reported by the device, not the capacity printed on the phone’s packaging.

Open the notification shade and look for the interrupted update notification. If Samsung presents a resume control, use it. If no resume option is offered, establish a stable Wi‑Fi connection, confirm storage again and retry from the software-update screen. A partial package is not evidence that the firmware itself is wrong.

When the installation reports an error
Do not disconnect the phone or force it off while an installation is in progress. Once the device has returned to its normal interface, retry after checking Wi‑Fi, charge and storage. If repeated attempts fail despite sufficient space and a stable connection, move to Smart Switch rather than repeatedly starting the same on-device installation.
When a downloaded app may be interfering
Samsung’s regional troubleshooting guidance identifies third-party app conflicts as a possible cause and suggests Safe mode as a diagnostic. Safe mode disables downloaded apps while leaving the core system available. If the update succeeds or the symptom disappears in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be involved; remove or disable recently added apps after returning to normal mode, then retry. If the failure remains in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the cause.
Use Samsung Smart Switch as an alternate official route
Smart Switch is a second installation path, not a guaranteed workaround for a carrier rollout or an ineligible device. It can help when the phone’s own update process fails and the computer version recognizes an available package.

- Install or update Smart Switch on a compatible computer.
- Start Smart Switch, then connect the Galaxy phone or tablet with a USB data cable that supports data, not charging only.
- Unlock the device if prompted and accept the USB connection request.
- If the phone asks for a USB mode, choose Transferring files / Android Auto.
- Wait for Smart Switch to detect the device. If it offers a software update, review the on-screen instructions and start it.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use or restart the phone until Smart Switch reports completion.
Smart Switch can only install an update that Samsung or the relevant carrier makes available for that connected device. It cannot manufacture a release that has not reached the model, region or carrier.

Resolve a Smart Switch connection failure
- Update Smart Switch on the computer, then restart the computer and the phone.
- Reconnect the cable and select Transferring files / Android Auto if the USB prompt appears again.
- Try another USB port, preferably one directly on the computer rather than through a hub.
- Try another compatible data cable. Verify that its connector fits both the Galaxy device and the computer and that it supports data transfer.
- If detection still fails, reinstall Smart Switch and try another computer.
- Check whether the carrier uses a USB update mode that is incompatible with Smart Switch; carrier support can confirm the correct route.
Do not unplug the device during an update, even if the computer appears inactive for a while. Interrupting the connection can leave the installation incomplete.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to do if the Galaxy will not boot after the failure
A phone that cannot boot normally after an update failure is a service case, not a routine network or storage problem. Samsung’s official guidance states: “If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.”
Contact Samsung or an authorized service provider and describe the sequence precisely: the update source, the point at which it failed and what appears on the screen now. Have the model and software information you recorded earlier available. Service availability, cost and warranty treatment depend on the device and location and must be confirmed locally.
Do not promise yourself that a factory reset will repair a failed firmware installation, and do not substitute unofficial firmware procedures for service guidance. A reset can erase personal data without correcting the underlying firmware state.

| Phone will not boot after the failed update | Stop repeated retries and arrange service to reflash the device | Samsung or authorized service |
Common mistakes that make update problems worse
Assuming another Galaxy’s release applies to yours
Two phones with the same commercial name can have different carrier firmware or regional variants. Compare the complete model and original sales channel before concluding that your phone is late.
Using cellular data when the carrier requires Wi‑Fi
Some carrier policies block update downloads over cellular data. Connect to Wi‑Fi before diagnosing the phone as incompatible.
Retrying without addressing storage
If the device has already reported a storage shortfall, repeating the same attempt will not create space. Follow the amount in the error, then restart the update.
Recommended Free Tools
Changing the USB mode after Smart Switch has started
Smart Switch needs the phone exposed as a data device. Select Transferring files / Android Auto when prompted and keep that connection stable until the process ends.
Disconnecting during installation
A cable removal or forced shutdown during firmware installation can turn a recoverable update error into a device that will not boot. Wait for the phone or Smart Switch to report completion.
Jumping to unofficial firmware
Carrier and regional eligibility are part of the update process. Unofficial flashing can introduce additional risk and is not Samsung’s recommended answer to a missing or failed update.
A practical checklist
- Classify the symptom: missing, downloading, installing or unable to boot.
- Record the exact model and software/baseband information under Settings > About phone/About tablet > Software information.
- Confirm the original carrier and region, especially for an unlocked device.
- Use Wi‑Fi where the carrier or device requires it.
- Follow the device’s charge instruction and free the internal storage amount it requests.
- Resume an interrupted download from its notification when that option appears.
- Test Safe mode only when a third-party app conflict is plausible and storage is sufficient.
- Use Smart Switch with a data-capable cable, the correct USB mode and an uninterrupted connection.
- Escalate a non-booting phone to Samsung or authorized service for reflash support.
What the available guidance does not establish
Samsung’s general troubleshooting guidance does not provide one release date for every Galaxy model, a universal battery or storage threshold, a guaranteed Smart Switch success rate, or a single eligibility list covering all countries and carriers. Those details vary by device, software version, carrier and region. Treat the update screen, the original carrier and Samsung support for your location as the authoritative sources for a specific phone.
