Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs Microsoft Surface Pro 9: which is best for work? The Surface Pro 9 is the safer laptop replacement for most professional workloads because Windows 11 runs full desktop software. The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is better for handwritten notes, drawing, media, portability without a keyboard, and Samsung-focused tablet work.

These devices are not equivalent alternatives with different processors. The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is a large Android tablet with Samsung DeX, while the Surface Pro 9 is a Windows PC in tablet form. That operating-system difference matters more than a processor name or a small specification advantage.

There is also an important model warning: the Surface Pro 9 comes in Intel/Wi-Fi and SQ3/5G versions. The Intel model is the one to prioritize for demanding desktop work. Microsoft documents compatibility limitations for some games, CAD applications, third-party drivers, and antivirus software on the SQ3 ARM model.

Key takeaways

  • The Surface Pro 9 Intel is the better primary work computer for full Microsoft Office, desktop applications, corporate tools, specialist software, docks, and external monitors.
  • The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is the better tablet-first work device for handwritten notes, PDF markup, drawing, media, and Samsung Galaxy integration.
  • Samsung DeX provides resizable windows, a taskbar, and keyboard shortcuts, but DeX still runs Android applications rather than Windows desktop software.
  • The Surface Pro 9 SQ3/5G model should not be treated as interchangeable with the Intel model because ARM compatibility varies by application, driver, and security tool.
  • The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra includes an S Pen in Samsung’s product-package context, while Surface Pro 9 keyboard and pen accessories are sold separately.
  • Both products were introduced in 2022–2023 and are older than the newest hardware available in August 2026, so buyers without a strict two-model choice should also investigate current generations.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra vs Microsoft Surface Pro 9: which is best for work?

Choose the Surface Pro 9 Intel if the device must replace a Windows laptop, run desktop software, connect to a professional dock, or fit an organization’s Windows management policies. Choose the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra if your work is browser-based, document-based, visual, handwritten, or meeting-oriented and you value a huge AMOLED display and a natural tablet experience more than Windows compatibility.

What are the main differences between the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra and Surface Pro 9?

The main difference is the platform. The Surface Pro 9 runs Windows 11 and behaves like a detachable PC. The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra runs Android and adds Samsung DeX, a desktop-like interface intended to make tablet multitasking more practical.

Which device is better for Microsoft Office and Google Workspace?

The Surface Pro 9 Intel is better for full desktop Office work, while the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is fully adequate for many browser-based and mobile Office workflows.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

On the Surface Pro 9, users can install conventional Windows versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other desktop applications. Windows also provides mature file-management, window-snapping, browser-extension, plug-in, printing, VPN, and peripheral support. Microsoft 365 applications still require an eligible license or subscription to activate and use; buying a Surface does not automatically provide a permanent Office license.

The Tab S9 Ultra supports Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Slack, Teams, Zoom, OneNote, and similar services through Android applications and browsers. DeX makes multiple windows and keyboard-driven work more comfortable than a standard tablet interface. However, Android versions can have different menus, file behavior, extensions, or advanced features than desktop versions.

For email, calendars, messaging, research, shared documents, and ordinary presentations, either device can work well. For complex Excel workbooks, desktop Outlook plug-ins, macros, document automation, browser extensions, or a company-specific Office workflow, the Surface Pro 9 Intel is the safer choice.

Does Samsung DeX replace Windows?

No. Samsung DeX makes Android look and behave more like a desktop environment, but Samsung DeX does not turn the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra into a Windows PC. DeX provides resizable windows, a taskbar, keyboard shortcuts, and a more conventional multitasking layout. The applications underneath remain Android applications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction is easy to miss because DeX can feel laptop-like during email, document editing, web research, and video calls. Reviews from Tom’s Guide and TechRadar both highlight the practical benefit of DeX while noting that mobile applications can remain less capable than laptop or desktop counterparts.

DeX is a good fit when the required services are available as capable Android apps or web apps. DeX is a poor substitute for Windows when the workflow depends on desktop browser extensions, local development tools, legacy software, Windows plug-ins, specialized USB drivers, CAD applications, or enterprise tools that have no complete Android version.

Which device is better for writing, spreadsheets, and presentations?

The Surface Pro 9 is generally better for sustained keyboard work, while the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra offers more screen area and a more flexible tablet-first experience.

Work task Better choice Reason
Long-form writing Surface Pro 9 The 3:2 display and Windows keyboard workflow suit documents and web research
Complex spreadsheets Surface Pro 9 Intel Desktop Excel, broader file compatibility, and conventional mouse-and-keyboard multitasking
Basic documents and email Either Both support common productivity services; the choice depends on app requirements and accessory preferences
Large presentation review Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra The 14.6-inch display provides a large canvas for slides and reference material
Frequent typing away from a desk Surface Pro 9 The keyboard setup is more naturally designed around a PC workflow, although neither detachable design is ideal on a lap

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra’s 14.6-inch, 2960×1848 AMOLED screen is excellent for viewing two documents, a reference page, or a presentation at once. The Surface Pro 9’s 13-inch, 2880×1920 3:2 display is less dramatic but gives documents and web pages useful vertical space.

Which device is better for handwritten notes, PDFs, and drawing?

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is the better out-of-box pen and note-taking device because Samsung includes the S Pen in the product package context and designs the tablet around touch and handwriting.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ Plus 12.4” 256GB Android Tablet, Moonstone Gray | Galaxy AI Tools, Circle to Search, AMOLED 2X Display, Long Battery Life, Durable Design, S Pen for Note-Taking, US Version
  • INNOVATIVE ART POWER: Turn your simple sketches into works of art instantly using Sketch to Image¹ with Galaxy AI.²
  • SEARCHING MADE EASY: Quickly search for just about anything you see on your Tab — all without switching apps — using Circle to Search with Google.³
  • MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT: Capture your lecture, meeting, or daily notes and let Note Assist⁴ with Galaxy AI² do the hard work of organizing and even summarizing them for you.
  • NEXT-LEVEL NOTE TAKING: Get transcripts and summaries of recorded lectures and meetings, just like that.⁵
  • PACKED WITH POWER: No matter what you take on or where you take your Galaxy Tab S10+, enjoy every experience with a powerful tablet processor.

The S Pen is useful for meeting notes, diagrams, PDF markup, screenshots, presentations, and sketching. Samsung says the pen attaches and charges magnetically and carries an IP68 rating; the official S Pen and Tab support guide documents those series features.

The Surface Pro 9 can be excellent for handwriting, but the Surface Slim Pen 2 is sold separately. The Surface’s advantage appears when pen input is part of a Windows-native workflow such as OneNote, Whiteboard, Photoshop, desktop PDF software, or another professional application.

Pen-related need Recommendation

Which screen and design are better for work?

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra has the better visual experience and the larger canvas, while the Surface Pro 9 has the more document-friendly shape and more conventional PC ergonomics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Tab’s AMOLED panel gives visual work, photos, movies, and presentations strong contrast and deep blacks. The 14.6-inch size benefits split-screen DeX work, large PDFs, drawing, and training videos beside a document. The cost of that large canvas is handling: the Tab can feel excessive as a handheld tablet and awkward in cramped seating or while standing. Engadget’s review and PhoneArena’s review both discuss the unusual size and the practical limits of treating the Ultra like an ordinary tablet.

The Surface Pro 9’s 3:2 aspect ratio is better matched to Word pages, spreadsheets, browser research, and portrait-oriented documents. Its kickstand gives a broad range of desk viewing angles, although the flexible detachable keyboard is still less comfortable on a lap than a conventional clamshell laptop.

Neither product should be sold as a small handheld tablet. The Tab S9 Ultra is thinner and lighter as a tablet, while the Surface Pro 9 behaves more naturally as a compact PC. Adding a keyboard case changes the practical weight and portability of both.

How do the keyboards and complete work setups compare?

The Surface Pro 9 offers the better sustained-typing workflow, but both products become substantially more expensive and less tablet-like after adding work accessories.

Samsung’s June 2026 U.S. MSRP list gives the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra $199.99 for the Book Cover Keyboard Slim and $349.99 for the Book Cover Keyboard. Those are MSRP signals, not guaranteed current sale prices, and Samsung states that prices can change without notice. The Slim model may suit occasional typing and travel, while full-time writers should not automatically treat the Slim as equivalent to a rigid laptop keyboard.

The Surface Pro 9 supports the Surface Pro Keyboard and Surface Pro Signature Keyboard. The Signature Keyboard stores and wirelessly charges the Surface Slim Pen 2. Microsoft confirms that the keyboard and pen are sold separately, but current prices should be checked at the official Surface keyboard page or an authorized retailer before publication or purchase.

Setup What it includes Who should consider it
Tab tablet-first Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra with included S Pen; no keyboard Readers, note-takers, artists, and occasional typists
Tab basic work setup Tab plus Book Cover Keyboard Slim at the June 2026 U.S. MSRP signal of $199.99 Email, notes, travel, and moderate DeX typing
Tab desk substitute Tab plus Book Cover Keyboard at the June 2026 U.S. MSRP signal of $349.99, with mouse or hub as needed Buyers committed to a large Android workstation
Surface PC setup Surface Pro 9 plus a compatible keyboard and optional Surface Slim Pen 2 Primary-computer users who need Windows
Desk workstation Either device plus charger, mouse, and USB-C hub or dock where necessary Users connecting displays, storage, printers, and other peripherals

Compare complete setup cost rather than tablet-only price. A realistic comparison includes the device, keyboard, pen, charger, mouse, dock or hub, Microsoft 365 if required, storage, warranty, and the condition of any used unit.

Which device has better performance for professional work?

The Surface Pro 9 Intel has the more useful performance advantage for professional work because it runs a broader range of desktop software, not because processor names alone prove that it is faster in every task.

Microsoft lists 12th-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, Intel Iris Xe graphics, up to 32GB of RAM, and removable SSD options up to 1TB for the Intel model. Those capabilities suit conventional Windows multitasking, desktop Office, local development, professional peripherals, and applications that have no Android equivalent.

Built-in Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor for fast, secure, and convenient login

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy and is offered in 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, and 16GB/1TB configurations, with microSD expansion up to 1TB listed by Samsung. The tablet is fast for Android applications, browsing, media, DeX, and note-taking. High specifications cannot compensate when the required professional application is unavailable or feature-limited on Android.

The Surface Pro 9 SQ3/5G requires more caution. Microsoft identifies the ARM model’s compatibility limitations for some games, CAD software, third-party drivers, and antivirus software. Confirm every application, VPN, certificate, printer, scanner, USB device, and security tool before buying the SQ3 model. Cellular connectivity and a manufacturer battery estimate are not worth much if the required software cannot run correctly.

Which device is better for ports, storage, and external monitors?

The Surface Pro 9 Intel is the better professional desk computer because its two USB-C ports support USB4 and Thunderbolt 4, while the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra offers easier storage expansion through microSD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Connectivity need Better choice Why
High-bandwidth dock Surface Pro 9 Intel Two USB-C ports with USB4/Thunderbolt 4
External displays Surface Pro 9 Intel for a PC desk setup Thunderbolt 4 provides a stronger dock and peripheral ecosystem
Portable storage expansion Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra microSD expansion up to 1TB is listed by Samsung
Charging while using one simple USB-C accessory Depends on the hub The Tab has one USB-C port, so charging, storage, displays, and peripherals may require a hub
Two-monitor professional workflow Surface Pro 9 Intel Thunderbolt 4 makes the Surface the safer starting point, while Tab hub and display behavior must be checked for the exact arrangement

The Tab S9 Ultra can output video through USB-C and work with hubs, but one port makes simultaneous charging, storage, displays, and accessories more dependent on the hub. The Surface Pro 9 Intel also includes a Surface Connect port and a keyboard connector. See Microsoft’s port and expansion specifications and Samsung’s connectivity specifications for model details.

Which device has better battery life and connectivity?

There is no universal battery-life winner because Microsoft’s estimates and independent mixed-workload testing use different conditions.

Microsoft rates the Surface Pro 9 Intel/Wi-Fi for up to 15.5 hours of typical device usage and the SQ3/5G model for up to 19 hours. Microsoft states that results vary with configuration, usage, network, and settings. Samsung lists an 11,200mAh battery and support for 45W charging for the Tab S9 Ultra. TechRadar found the Tab capable of lasting through a full eight-hour workday in a mixed workload, but brightness, DeX, connectivity, refresh rate, and applications can materially change results.

Manufacturer estimates and an independent eight-hour mixed-workload result are not directly comparable. Treat the claims as planning information, not a guaranteed runtime. A bright AMOLED display, high refresh rate, cellular connectivity, video calls, and DeX multitasking can all change practical endurance.

For cellular work, compare the Surface Pro 9 SQ3/5G against a cellular Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra by carrier availability and application compatibility. A 5G connection does not resolve Android app limitations or Windows ARM limitations.

Which device is better for video calls?

The Surface Pro 9 is the safer choice for Windows-native meeting software and enterprise authentication, while the Tab S9 Ultra is attractive for large-screen Android meetings and tablet-style camera positioning.

The Surface Pro 9 includes a 1080p front camera, Windows Hello face authentication, dual far-field studio microphones, and a 10MP rear camera according to Microsoft’s specifications. The Tab S9 Ultra has dual front-facing cameras and a landscape-oriented design intended to suit meetings, but exact camera configurations should be confirmed for the region and model on Samsung’s comparison page.

Camera megapixels do not determine the entire meeting experience. Microphone pickup, camera placement, lighting, meeting-app support, Windows Hello or other authentication requirements, desk positioning, and the organization’s security policies matter more than a simple camera-count comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which device is better for business security and management?

Neither device is universally more secure; the better choice is the platform that integrates with the employer’s identity, device-management, VPN, endpoint-security, and company-data policies.

  • Wi-Fi Only Model – Designed for high-speed wireless use. This model does not support SIM cards or cellular network connections.
  • International Version – Global model without U.S. domestic warranty. Covered under return policy for hassle-free protection.

The Surface Pro 9 Intel includes TPM 2.0 and Windows Hello face sign-in and fits organizations already built around Windows management, Microsoft Intune, Windows policies, desktop VPN clients, certificates, and endpoint-security tools. Business Surface configurations may also differ from consumer configurations, including the Windows edition.

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra can be appropriate for organizations using Samsung Knox and Android Enterprise, but the employer must support Android tablets for the required data and applications. Before purchase, ask the IT department whether the tablet can enroll in management, access corporate VPNs, use required certificates, print or scan, authenticate to company services, and run approved security software.

For personal work, Android management may be sufficient. For a corporate Windows environment, the Surface Pro 9 Intel normally creates fewer compatibility questions.

What are the complete costs to compare?

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra’s listed U.S. starting MSRP is $1,199.99 on Samsung’s comparison page, but the work-ready price is higher after adding a keyboard. The Surface Pro 9’s complete cost also requires a keyboard and possibly a Surface Slim Pen 2, and current Surface pricing should be verified because the model is not the newest generation.

Cost category Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra Surface Pro 9
Base product Samsung lists a starting U.S. MSRP of $1,199.99; sale and regional pricing vary Check the current Microsoft or authorized-retailer listing; availability and pricing vary
Keyboard June 2026 U.S. MSRP signals: $199.99 Slim or $349.99 Book Cover Keyboard Keyboard sold separately; verify current price
Pen S Pen included in the tablet package context; replacement S Pen MSRP signal was $59.99 in the June 2026 list Surface Slim Pen 2 sold separately; verify current price
Mouse and hub May be useful because DeX and the single USB-C port benefit from accessories Mouse optional; dock or hub is useful for a desk setup
Software Check subscriptions and Android app requirements Microsoft 365 applications require a qualifying license or subscription
Warranty and condition Especially important for older, discounted, or used stock Especially important because Surface Pro 9 is an older generation by August 2026

The June 2026 Samsung U.S. MSRP accessory list is not proof of a current sale price. Do not use the $1,199.99 tablet price, the $199.99 Slim keyboard price, or the $349.99 Book Cover Keyboard price as a live retailer quote without checking the listing on the publication date.

Which device should different types of workers buy?

Reader or workload Recommendation Reason
Corporate Windows employee Surface Pro 9 Intel Better fit for Windows applications, management, VPNs, authentication, and peripherals
Writer or student Surface for desktop Office; Tab for notes and media The Surface favors sustained typing; the Tab favors handwriting and tablet use
Artist or heavy handwritten-note user Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra Large AMOLED canvas and included S Pen
Developer, engineer, or CAD user Surface Pro 9 Intel, after checking requirements Windows provides broader access to development and specialist software; SQ3 needs particular caution
Frequent traveler Depends on tablet-only versus keyboard-equipped use The Tab is lighter as a tablet, but its huge size and keyboard case affect practical portability
Samsung Galaxy phone owner Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra Samsung ecosystem features such as Multi Control can add convenience
5G buyer Check both cellular variants Surface SQ3 offers Windows cellular mobility but has ARM limits; the cellular Tab offers Android mobility
Occasional computer user Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra More natural touch use, pen input, media, and tablet applications
Single-device laptop replacement Surface Pro 9 Intel Fewer operating-system and application compromises

What should you check before buying?

  1. List your non-negotiable applications. Check desktop Office requirements, accounting software, Adobe applications, CAD, coding tools, browser extensions, VPN clients, plug-ins, printers, scanners, and USB devices.
  2. Confirm the Surface architecture. Buy the Intel/Wi-Fi model for the broadest compatibility. Consider SQ3/5G only after confirming every required application and driver works on Windows ARM.
  3. Test the Android version of every important app. Do not assume that an Android app has the same features, file handling, extensions, or keyboard support as its Windows counterpart.
  4. Price the complete setup. Include the keyboard, pen, mouse, charger, hub or dock, Microsoft 365, storage, warranty, and taxes or regional pricing.
  5. Decide where the device will be used. Both hybrids are strongest on a desk. Neither detachable keyboard design should be treated as a conventional clamshell laptop on a lap.
  6. Check external-display requirements. The Surface Pro 9 Intel is the safer choice for high-bandwidth docks and multi-monitor work. Confirm the exact Tab hub and display arrangement before purchase.
  7. Ask corporate IT for approval. Confirm management enrollment, VPN, certificates, endpoint security, authentication, and company-data policies.
  8. Check current-generation alternatives. Microsoft announced newer Surface Pro hardware in June 2026, so buyers are not restricted to the Surface Pro 9 unless the comparison is specifically limited to these two devices.

Microsoft’s June 2026 Surface announcement supports treating the Surface Pro 9 as an older-generation option in an August 2026 buying decision. Current availability, warranty, and new-versus-used condition should be checked rather than assumed.

What are the biggest buying mistakes?

  • Comparing processors instead of platforms: Snapdragon, SQ3, and Intel specifications do not reveal whether the required application exists or works properly.
  • Assuming DeX equals Windows: DeX improves Android multitasking but does not provide Windows desktop applications.
  • Buying the SQ3 Surface without checking compatibility: ARM limitations can affect CAD, drivers, antivirus, games, and specialist tools.
  • Comparing tablet-only prices: A keyboard, pen, mouse, hub, subscription, and warranty can materially change the decision.
  • Calling the Tab a universal laptop replacement: The Tab can replace a laptop for browser, email, notes, documents, meetings, and media, but not every professional workload.
  • Ignoring size and ergonomics: The Tab’s 14.6-inch screen is excellent on a desk but can be awkward to hold or use in cramped spaces.
  • Declaring a universal security winner: Business suitability depends on the organization’s management and identity ecosystem.

Are there newer alternatives in 2026?

Yes. As of August 2026, newer Surface Pro hardware exists, and newer Samsung Galaxy Tab Ultra generations may also be available depending on market and stock. A conventional Windows laptop is worth considering if keyboard comfort and desktop compatibility matter more than detachable-tablet flexibility. A smaller Galaxy Tab S9 or S9+ may be more practical if the Ultra’s size is excessive. A current iPad Pro is another premium tablet option when tablet software and accessories matter more than Windows compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those alternatives require separate current-price and specification checks. The recommendation in this article answers the narrower question of which is better between the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra and Surface Pro 9.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra replace a laptop for work?

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra can replace a laptop for browser work, email, notes, documents, meetings, PDF annotation, and media, especially with DeX and a keyboard. The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is not a universal Windows replacement because Android applications may lack desktop features, plug-ins, drivers, or specialist software compatibility.

Which Surface Pro 9 model is best for work?

The Surface Pro 9 Intel is the best work model for most buyers who need broad desktop compatibility, Thunderbolt 4 docking, and conventional Windows applications. The Surface Pro 9 SQ3/5G model should be chosen only after checking required applications, drivers, antivirus, CAD tools, and peripherals for Windows ARM compatibility.

Does the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra come with an S Pen?

The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra includes the S Pen in Samsung’s product-package context, while the Surface Slim Pen 2 is sold separately for the Surface Pro 9. Buyers should still verify the exact retailer bundle and regional packaging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Surface Pro 9 better than the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra for Microsoft Office?

The Surface Pro 9 Intel is better for full desktop Microsoft Office workflows, complex Excel files, desktop Outlook features, plug-ins, and Windows multitasking. The Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra is suitable for many ordinary Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, and browser-based tasks through Android applications and DeX.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose the Surface Pro 9 Intel if the device must replace your laptop or run full Windows software. Choose the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra if you want the better tablet: a huge AMOLED screen, included S Pen, strong handwriting and drawing, expandable storage, media performance, and Samsung ecosystem features. The Surface is the safer primary work computer; the Tab is the more enjoyable tablet-first workstation.
