Short answer: Choose the Galaxy Tab S10 FE if you use Android or Galaxy devices and want an S Pen in the box, microSD expansion, a 90Hz display, and stated IP68 water-and-dust resistance. Choose the current iPad Air with the M4 chip if you prefer Apple’s ecosystem and iPadOS, want Wi‑Fi 7, need 11-inch or 13-inch size choices, or plan to use Apple Pencil.

This is a fit comparison rather than a benchmark ranking. Samsung’s regular Tab S10 FE is a 10.9-inch tablet; the 13.1-inch Tab S10 FE+ is a separate model. Apple’s current iPad Air specification page describes the M4 generation, so older comparisons with an M3 iPad Air are no longer current.

At a glance: the important differences

Decision point Galaxy Tab S10 FE Current iPad Air What it means
Operating system and chip Android 15 (as listed in Samsung’s announcement) with Exynos 1580 iPadOS with Apple M4 Choose the platform that fits your existing devices and apps; the specifications alone do not establish a real-world speed winner.
Screen sizes 10.9-inch FE; 13.1-inch FE+ is a different model 11-inch or 13-inch The regular FE is closest in size to the 11-inch Air.
Refresh rate and brightness LCD, up to 90Hz; Samsung states up to 800 nits HBM for the FE series 2360 × 1640, 264 ppi, 500 nits (11-inch); 2732 × 2048, 264 ppi, 600 nits (13-inch) These are manufacturer figures measured with different wording, not a controlled side-by-side test.
Pen S Pen included; Samsung says BLE is not supported Supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C); neither is listed in the tablet’s in-box contents Samsung has the lower out-of-box pen cost when you need a stylus.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Galaxy Tab S10 FE when these priorities matter

  • You already use Android or Galaxy phones, earbuds, watches, or Windows integrations and want the least-friction ecosystem match.
  • You want handwritten notes or sketches without buying a separate pen. Samsung says the S Pen is included.
  • You want to add inexpensive or very large removable storage. The FE accepts microSD cards up to 2TB, in addition to its 128GB or 256GB internal configuration.
  • You expect occasional exposure to rain, splashes, dust, or a sandy environment and value Samsung’s stated IP68 rating.
  • You prefer a faster-than-60Hz scrolling mode. Samsung specifies a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz.
  • You want the option of a cellular model and Samsung’s FE 5G version fits your carrier and region.

Buy the iPad Air M4 when these priorities matter

  • You already own Apple devices and rely on iCloud, AirDrop, iMessage, FaceTime, or iPad-specific workflows.
  • You want iPadOS and the software ecosystem built around it, including support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C).
  • You want a choice between an 11-inch portable tablet and a 13-inch workspace without changing product families.
  • You want Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 as listed on Apple’s current specifications page.
  • You need up to 1TB of built-in storage and do not want to manage removable cards.
  • You are prepared to buy a compatible Pencil separately unless the retailer explicitly includes one in a bundle.

Model and size: compare the right devices

The name “Tab S10 FE” refers to Samsung’s regular 10.9-inch model. Samsung also sells a 13.1-inch Tab S10 FE+, but that is not the same tablet with a larger screen; it is a separate model with its own dimensions and configuration. Comparing the regular FE with Apple’s 11-inch Air is the closest portable-size matchup. Compare the FE+ with the 13-inch Air only if a large screen is central to your decision.

Apple’s current iPad Air family uses the M4 chip and comes in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. Articles that call the current Air an M3 model describe the previous generation and should be treated as historical comparisons, not as a description of the model currently listed by Apple.

Display: refresh rate, resolution and brightness

What Samsung specifies

The Tab S10 FE uses an LCD panel with a maximum refresh rate of 90Hz. Samsung states up to 800 nits in high-brightness mode for the FE series. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported animations look smoother than a 60Hz display, but the maximum rate does not mean every app or task runs at 90Hz all the time.

What Apple specifies

Apple lists 2360 × 1640 resolution and 264 pixels per inch for the 11-inch Air, with 500 nits of brightness. The 13-inch Air is 2732 × 2048 at the same 264 ppi and is listed at 600 nits. Apple’s page does not provide an equivalent refresh-rate claim in the supplied specifications.

Do not turn these figures into an unsupported screen verdict. Samsung’s “up to 800 nits HBM” wording and Apple’s listed brightness values may use different measurement conditions, and no controlled display comparison establishes which panel is easier to read, more accurate, or better for drawing. If outdoor visibility is important, look at the exact model in person or rely on a test that measures both screens under identical conditions.

Performance and software: specifications are not a benchmark

Samsung lists an Exynos 1580 processor and Android 15 in its announcement. Apple lists its M4 chip and iPadOS for the current Air. Those labels describe different platforms and do not by themselves prove which tablet will open your apps faster, export video sooner, or sustain heavier games longer. No independent head-to-head performance result is established here.

The practical decision is usually software first. Android makes the FE a natural extension of a Galaxy phone and supports Samsung’s connected-device features. iPadOS offers Apple’s tablet interface and the broad iPad accessory and app ecosystem. Samsung names Goodnotes, Clip Studio Paint, and LumaFusion among supported app examples; availability, features, purchase requirements, and subscriptions vary by app and region. Treat those names as compatibility examples, not as a promise that every feature is free or identical on both platforms.

Stylus and note-taking costs

Galaxy Tab S10 FE: S Pen included

Samsung says an S Pen is included with the Tab S10 FE. That makes the FE’s initial setup simpler for handwritten notes, markup, and drawing because there is no separate pen purchase to budget for. Samsung also notes that the included S Pen does not support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), so do not expect BLE-dependent remote-control or gesture features from this pen.

iPad Air: Pencil support, separate purchase

The iPad Air supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple’s listed in-box contents do not include either Pencil. If you need a stylus, add the price of a compatible Pencil to the tablet’s purchase price, and confirm compatibility with the exact iPad Air generation and size before ordering. A retailer bundle can change the effective cost, but only the bundle’s stated contents should be relied on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a student or note-taker who needs a pen on day one, the included S Pen is a meaningful total-cost advantage. For an Apple user who already owns a compatible Pencil, that advantage may disappear; verify that the existing Pencil is supported before assuming it will transfer.

Storage: removable expansion versus built-in capacity

Samsung offers 128GB and 256GB internal configurations and advertises microSD expansion up to 2TB. Removable storage is useful for downloaded video, photos, documents, and media libraries, but app installation rules and performance can differ between internal and card storage. Check the card’s capacity and speed rating and keep important files backed up; a card is not a substitute for a second copy of irreplaceable data.

Apple lists 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB internal capacities for the current iPad Air. There is no removable-storage option listed on the cited Apple specification page. The higher 512GB and 1TB tiers can be more convenient for large creative projects because everything stays on the tablet, but you must choose that capacity at purchase.

Water and dust resistance: a real FE advantage, with limits

Samsung specifies IP68 protection for the Tab S10 FE under its stated laboratory conditions: fresh water up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes, along with dust protection. Samsung also cautions that resistance can diminish over time. This is protection against defined test exposure, not permission to use the tablet underwater, in salt water, in a pool, or while charging in a wet location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No IP water- or dust-resistance rating appears on the cited Apple iPad Air specification page. If a tablet will routinely travel outdoors, sit in a workshop, or be used around splashes, the FE’s documented rating is a substantial selection factor. Use a case and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance regardless of model.

Wireless and cellular options

The FE lists Wi‑Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. Samsung offers a 5G version of the FE. Check the exact regional model, supported bands, SIM requirements, and carrier approval before buying a cellular tablet; a “5G” label does not guarantee service on every network.

The iPad Air lists Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Cellular iPad Air versions use 5G and eSIM. Confirm that your carrier supports eSIM activation for the specific iPad model and country. Wi‑Fi 7 can be valuable in a compatible network, but your router and internet plan must support the relevant features before you see a benefit.

Weight, portability and battery expectations

Samsung lists the Wi‑Fi Tab S10 FE at about 1.1 pounds. Apple lists the Wi‑Fi 11-inch Air at 1.02 pounds and the Wi‑Fi 13-inch Air at 1.36 pounds. The 11-inch Air is therefore lighter on the published figures, while the larger Air and Samsung’s FE+ belong to a different portability class. Case and keyboard weight can materially change what you carry.

Samsung gives an 8,000mAh typical battery capacity and warns that actual battery life varies with use and network conditions. Apple estimates up to 10 hours of Wi‑Fi web browsing or video playback for both Air sizes. A capacity in milliamp-hours and a manufacturer’s usage estimate are different measurements, so neither proves longer real-world endurance. Brightness, cellular reception, video codecs, gaming, background sync, and accessories all affect runtime.

Price and the cost of a complete setup

Samsung announced U.S. launch prices of $499.99 for the Wi‑Fi Galaxy Tab S10 FE and $599.99 for the 5G version on April 2, 2025. Those are dated launch prices, not verified October 2026 sale prices. Current stock, discounts, trade-in offers, and regional pricing require a live retailer check; do not use an old search-result price as today’s cost.

The iPad Air’s effective cost depends on the storage tier, size, Wi‑Fi or cellular configuration, and whether you add an Apple Pencil. Apple’s specification page establishes the capacities and Pencil compatibility but does not provide a single universal street price for every market. Compare the exact configurations rather than comparing a base FE with a 1TB cellular Air.

Budget for accessories separately. Samsung lists its Book Cover Keyboard and Slim variant for the FE series. Keyboard covers, cases, and screen protectors are model-specific, so confirm that a listing names the regular 10.9-inch FE, the FE+, or the exact iPad Air generation you own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision process

  1. Choose your operating system first. If your phone and essential services are Apple-based, start with the iPad Air. If they are Android or Galaxy-based, start with the FE.
  2. Decide whether you need a pen immediately. The FE includes its S Pen. The Air supports two Pencil models, but neither is listed as included.
  3. Set your storage strategy. Pick the FE if microSD flexibility matters; pick an iPad capacity that covers your expected library because it has no removable-storage option listed.
  4. Choose the physical size. Match the regular FE to the 11-inch Air. Consider Samsung’s FE+ or Apple’s 13-inch Air only if the larger footprint helps your work.
  5. Check connectivity. Compare Wi‑Fi 6 versus Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth versions, and the exact 5G/eSIM or carrier requirements in your country.
  6. Apply the environment test. If defined IP68 protection matters, that points to Samsung. If it does not, keep the decision focused on software, pen, storage, and size.
  7. Price the complete kit. Include the pen, keyboard, case, storage card, cellular plan, and any app subscriptions before deciding that one model is cheaper.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Using an M3 comparison as if it were current. The current iPad Air page describes M4.
  • Assuming the FE+ is just a larger FE. It is a separate 13.1-inch model; verify dimensions, accessories, and configuration.
  • Calling IP68 “waterproof.” The rating is for Samsung’s stated fresh-water and dust test conditions, and resistance may decline.
  • Assuming every Pencil is included with an iPad. Apple lists Pencil support, not a Pencil in the cited in-box contents.
  • Comparing battery numbers as if they were lab results. Samsung’s capacity and Apple’s runtime estimate cannot establish a head-to-head winner.
  • Treating chip names as a complete performance review. No independent test here measures sustained speed, gaming, thermals, or export times.
  • Buying a case by family name alone. Confirm the precise FE, FE+, or iPad Air size and generation.

Bottom line by buyer type

If you are… Better starting point Reason
An Android or Galaxy owner Galaxy Tab S10 FE It keeps you in the Android ecosystem and includes the S Pen.
A student who needs expandable files and a pen Galaxy Tab S10 FE microSD expansion up to 2TB and an included S Pen reduce setup friction.
An Apple household using iCloud and AirDrop iPad Air M4 iPadOS and Apple-device continuity are likely to matter more than isolated specifications.
A digital artist already invested in Apple Pencil Pro iPad Air M4 The Air supports Apple Pencil Pro; verify that your existing Pencil is compatible.
Someone working in wet or dusty locations Galaxy Tab S10 FE Samsung publishes an IP68 rating under defined conditions.
A buyer wanting the newest listed wireless standards iPad Air M4 Apple lists Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
A buyer who needs 1TB internal storage iPad Air M4 Apple lists a 1TB configuration; Samsung’s stated internal options top out at 256GB, with microSD expansion available.

Samsung describes the FE series as bringing “advanced mobile AI experiences and Samsung’s connected ecosystem to even more tablet users, while still offering leading performance and design.” That is Samsung’s promotional characterization, not an independent performance finding. For your purchase, the decisive facts are simpler: ecosystem, included versus separate stylus, removable storage, size, connectivity, and whether Samsung’s stated IP68 protection is worth prioritizing.
