To use two apps at once on a Samsung Galaxy Tab, open Recents, tap the first app’s icon, choose Open in split screen view, then select the second app. For a movable window over another app, choose Open in pop-up view instead. Samsung’s labels and available controls can vary by model and software version.
Choose the window layout that fits your task

| Pop-up view | Places one app in a movable, resizable window over another app. | You want to refer to or briefly use an app without leaving the full-screen app underneath. |
Both modes are accessed from an app’s menu in Recents on Samsung’s tablet guide. Samsung’s multitasking instructions describe the two options.
Open two apps side by side
- Tap Recents in the Navigation bar. If you use full-screen gestures, open Recents with the gesture configured on your tablet.
- Find the first app and tap its icon, not its preview.
- Tap Open in split screen view.
- Choose the second app from Recents or the Apps screen. It opens in the other pane.
- Drag the divider between the apps to give either one more screen space.
To close the split view, Samsung’s tablet guide says to open Recents and tap X to close the split view. The exact Recents controls may differ across interfaces.

Open an app in a floating pop-up window
- Open Recents.
- Tap the app’s icon, then choose Open in pop-up view.
- Drag the window to move it. Drag its sides to resize it.
- Use the pop-up controls to adjust opacity, minimize the window to a floating icon, expand it to full screen, or close it.
Closing a pop-up window leaves the app in Recents, according to Samsung’s tablet instructions.

Optional shortcuts: gestures and Taskbar
Samsung documents additional ways to start Multi Window in its One UI 4.1.1 feature information. Depending on the interface, you may be able to swipe two fingers toward the middle from an edge or the bottom of the screen to start split screen, or swipe one finger from either top corner toward the center to open pop-up view. Samsung also describes dragging an app from Taskbar or Recents to an edge for split screen, or to the center for pop-up view. See Samsung’s One UI 4.1.1 feature page for those version-specific methods; do not assume every Galaxy Tab has them enabled.

If the option is missing or the app will not open
- The app may not support split screen. Samsung notes that some apps cannot use this mode. Try another app or use pop-up view if that option is available.
- Recents may look different. Its position can change if the Navigation bar is customized, and full-screen gestures may replace the visible navigation buttons. Samsung also cautions that screens and settings can vary by software version and wireless service provider. See Samsung’s Recents guidance.
- Do not assume every Tab supports the same number of windows. Samsung’s guide for the Tab S8 describes using two or three apps in Multi Window; that is model-specific documentation, not a general guarantee for all Galaxy Tab models. Samsung’s Tab S8 guide also mentions a Book Cover for propping up that tablet. A compatible stand or cover can help with hands-free use, but it is not required to activate Multi Window; check compatibility for your exact tablet.
