If your Samsung Galaxy still reports nearly full storage after you delete photos or apps, the files may not be gone yet. Galaxy phones commonly keep deleted items in a Trash or Recycle bin, while app caches, app data, downloads, duplicate files, offline media and system files continue to occupy space.

Start at Settings > Device care (called Battery and device care on some versions) > Storage. The category breakdown shows what is actually consuming internal storage. Work through the cleanup steps below, checking the available space after each major change.

Why storage stays full after you delete files

Deleting an item from Gallery or My Files often moves it to a Trash or Recycle bin instead of removing it immediately. Until that bin is emptied, the item can continue using internal storage and may still be restorable.

  • Temporary cache files created by frequently used apps.
  • Permanent app data such as downloaded videos, music, maps, documents, messages and account data.
  • Files in Downloads, installation packages and messaging-app folders.
  • Duplicate photos, videos or documents.
  • Unused apps that remain installed.
  • Photos and videos that are backed up online but whose device copies remain on the phone.
  • Android and One UI system files that are required for the phone to operate.

System storage cannot be cleaned like a personal folder. Concentrate first on user files, bins, caches and apps identified by the Storage breakdown.

Check the Storage breakdown before deleting anything

Open the correct menu for your Galaxy

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Device care or Battery and device care.
  3. Tap Storage.

Labels and layout vary by Galaxy model, Android release and One UI version. If you do not see Device care, use the Settings search box for Storage. Let the categories finish calculating; the totals can change while the phone scans.

Use the largest category as your starting point

Open the category with the largest removable amount. A large Images or Videos total points to Gallery, Downloads or messaging folders. A large Apps total calls for app-by-app review. A large Other or System total requires more caution: inspect the listed folders and apps rather than deleting random files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not delete a file merely because its name is unfamiliar. Check its location, file type and date, and keep a copy of anything you may need.

Empty every Trash or Recycle bin

This is the fastest fix when recently deleted photos or documents still count toward storage.

Gallery Trash

  1. Open Gallery.
  2. Tap the menu button (the exact icon varies by version).
  3. Open Trash or Recycle bin.
  4. Review the contents, then choose Empty and confirm permanent deletion.

My Files Trash

  1. Open My Files.
  2. Open Trash or Recycle bin.
  3. Review the files and tap Empty if you are certain they are no longer needed.

Check bins from Storage when available

On some Samsung software, open Settings > Battery and device care > Storage. If deleted items remain, app icons appear under Recycle bin. Open each listed app and tap Empty. This matters because Gallery and My Files can have separate bins.

Newer software may combine several bins

Some Galaxy versions integrate Trash for My Files, Gallery and Voice Recorder. The integrated view provides restore and permanent-delete controls. Check all three sources if the Storage total does not fall after emptying one bin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emptying a bin is permanent. Restore anything important before confirming; a permanently deleted local file may not be recoverable.

Find large, duplicate and downloaded files

Review Samsung’s file suggestions

The Storage screen can surface large files and duplicates. Open those sections, sort by size where the option is available, and inspect each item before deleting it. A duplicate detector can identify two copies, but only you can determine which copy is the original or whether both are needed.

Check My Files folders

In My Files, review these locations:

  • Downloads: installers, PDFs, images and videos saved by browsers or other apps.
  • Images and Videos: local media outside the Gallery view.
  • Installation files: packages left after an app was installed.
  • Documents, Audio and other category folders.

Messaging and social apps may also create their own media folders. Delete only files you have opened or otherwise identified, and remember that removing a file from My Files may not remove a copy held inside an app.

Clear app cache without erasing app data

Cache is temporary data and is generally safer to remove than app data. Google describes the action this way: “Clear cache: Deletes temporary data. Some apps may be slow the next time you open them.” The app recreates needed cache as you use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear cache for the biggest apps

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Choose an app with a large size in the Storage breakdown.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap Clear cache.

Repeat for genuinely large apps, especially those that stream or download substantial offline content. Available space may not increase much if the cache is small.

Do not confuse cache with Clear data

Control What it removes Risk and recovery
Clear cache Temporary files that the app can recreate. Usually low risk; the next launch may be slower while cache is rebuilt.
Clear data or Clear storage The app’s stored data, settings, sign-in state and downloaded content. Can remove accounts, offline files, messages or in-app progress. Recovery depends on the app’s own backup or sync.

Use Clear data only after confirming what the app stores and verifying any needed backup. It is not a routine substitute for clearing cache.

Uninstall unused apps or archive them

Remove apps you no longer use

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select an unused app and review its storage size.
  3. Tap Uninstall and confirm.

Some preinstalled apps cannot be uninstalled. Where offered, Disable stops the app and can prevent updates, but the amount of space recovered depends on the model and app.

Use automatic app archiving when available

Google’s automatic app archiving removes an unused app while retaining its personal data and icon so the app can be redownloaded later when it is available. It is useful when you want to reclaim the app package without intentionally deleting your data. Availability and behavior depend on the Android version and the app.

Free space from photos and videos safely

Verify Google Photos backup first

  1. Open Google Photos and confirm it is signed in to the account you intend to keep.
  2. Check the backup status and confirm that recent photos and videos have finished uploading.
  3. Open several recent items from the cloud while online to verify they are available.
  4. Only then use the option to delete device copies, or remove local files manually after checking them.

When backup is complete, Google says you can delete device copies and still find the backed-up versions in Google Photos while online. This does not protect files that were never uploaded, were backed up to a different account or are excluded by backup settings.

Know what “free up space” changes

Removing a device copy reduces internal storage but does not necessarily remove the cloud copy. It also means the item may need an internet connection to view at full resolution later. Keep local copies of files you must access without connectivity.

Move files to an SD card or computer

Check microSD compatibility first

Only Galaxy models with a microSD slot can expand storage this way. Check your exact model’s specifications or support page before purchasing a card; many recent Galaxy phones do not include a slot. Card capacity and supported formats also vary by model.

Move files to an inserted SD card

  1. Insert and, if prompted, set up the compatible microSD card.
  2. Open My Files and choose the category or folder containing the files.
  3. Select the files, tap Move (or Copy if you want to keep the original), then choose the SD-card destination.
  4. Confirm the transfer and open a moved file to verify it works before deleting any remaining copy from internal storage.

Samsung notes that many apps cannot be moved to an SD card. Moving photos, videos and documents is usually more practical than trying to relocate protected app data.

Copy files to a computer with USB

  1. Unlock the Galaxy and connect it to the computer with a USB cable that supports data.
  2. On the phone’s USB notification, choose File transfer or Transferring files.
  3. On the computer, open the phone’s internal storage and copy folders such as DCIM, Pictures, Movies and Download to a known backup location.
  4. Open several copied files on the computer before deleting the originals from the phone.

Computer transfer provides a separate copy and does not depend on a microSD slot, but it requires enough computer space and a reliable cable.

Choose the remedy by safety, capacity and convenience

Remedy Safety and reversibility Typical capacity gain Convenience Compatibility
Empty Trash or Recycle bin Permanent deletion after confirmation; no normal restore afterward. Potentially large if many photos or videos were recently deleted. Fast and entirely on-device. Menu and bin integration vary by Galaxy software.
Delete large or duplicate files Permanent unless another copy or backup exists; inspect first. Small to very large, depending on media and downloads. On-device, but review takes time. My Files and Storage tools are broadly available, with different labels by version.
Clear app cache Low risk; cache can be recreated. Usually modest and limited to the selected app’s cache. Simple, but must be repeated per app. Available through each app’s Storage page.
Clear app data High risk; may remove sign-ins, downloads and in-app content. Can be substantial for a data-heavy app. Quick but requires reconfiguration and possible re-downloads. Works per app, subject to app and system restrictions.
Uninstall or archive apps Uninstall removes the app; archiving preserves personal data when supported. Often larger than cache cleanup. Easy for a few apps; automatic archiving reduces manual work. Archiving depends on Android and app support; some system apps cannot be removed.
Delete verified device copies of backed-up media Cloud copy remains only if backup was complete and in the correct account. Potentially very large for photo and video libraries. Convenient after verification; online access may be needed later. Requires a working backup service and internet access.
Move files to SD card Reversible while both copies remain; card failure is a separate risk. Large for media and documents. Convenient after setup and transfer verification. Requires a Galaxy model with a supported microSD slot; many apps cannot move.
Copy files to a computer Reversible if the backup is verified before deletion. Large, limited by computer capacity. Requires a cable and computer, but is independent of cloud storage. Works with a data-capable USB connection.

Recheck storage and diagnose a stubborn total

  1. Return to Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Storage.
  2. Wait for the usage breakdown to refresh; it may take a moment after a large deletion or transfer.
  3. Compare the category that was previously large with the new total.
  4. If the same category remains unexpectedly high, open its details and identify the named app or folder.
  5. Restart the phone if the display appears stale, then check Storage again.

A large app entry points to that app’s cache, data or downloads. A large folder points to My Files or the app that created it. A large System figure should not be attacked by deleting unknown files; system components are required for Android and One UI.

When a factory reset is the only remaining option

A factory reset erases user data and returns the phone to its initial software state. It is model-specific and should be considered only after you have identified persistent accounting problems, completed a verified backup of photos, contacts, messages, authentication codes and other important data, and confirmed that ordinary cleanup has not solved the issue.

Before resetting, make sure you know the Google and Samsung account credentials that will be required during setup, and keep any two-factor authentication method accessible. A reset is not a way to recover an unverified backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Version and model differences to expect

  • Samsung changes the names between Device care and Battery and device care.
  • Trash may be separate in Gallery, My Files and Voice Recorder, or presented through an integrated view.
  • Storage categories and the large-file or duplicate-file tools differ by One UI and Android release.
  • Automatic app archiving is an Android feature whose availability depends on software and app support.
  • MicroSD expansion is limited to models with a physical card slot.

A Samsung regional storage guide was last updated July 14, 2023, so a missing menu should be checked against the support page for your exact model and current software version.

Practical cleanup checklist

  • Open Storage and note the largest categories.
  • Empty Gallery, My Files and any integrated or Voice Recorder Trash bins after reviewing them.
  • Inspect large, duplicate, downloaded and installation files in My Files.
  • Clear cache for the largest apps; avoid Clear data unless you understand the consequences.
  • Uninstall unused apps or enable archiving where supported.
  • Verify Google Photos backup, account and recent uploads before deleting device media.
  • Move verified files to a compatible SD card or computer.
  • Refresh Storage and investigate the specific app or folder if the total remains high.
