To update most Samsung Galaxy phones, open Settings > Software update (called System updates on some versions), choose Download and install or the equivalent check option, and follow the prompts. If an update is not offered, the release may be delayed by your carrier, model, region, Wi‑Fi rules, or a staged rollout. You can also try Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac. Support length is model-specific: some newer Galaxy devices qualify for up to seven years of security updates, while older commitments were shorter.
How do I update my Samsung Galaxy phone?
Samsung changes menu wording by model, carrier and software version. The update control is normally in the Settings app.
Install an update from the phone
- Connect to a reliable Wi‑Fi network if possible. Some carriers require Wi‑Fi for large downloads.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. On some Galaxy devices, the menu is labelled System updates.
- Choose Download and install, Check for system updates, Check for software updates, or the equivalent option shown on your model.
- Read the update information, start the download, and accept the on-screen instructions.
- Allow the phone to restart and complete the installation. Some devices need more than one update cycle, so repeat the check if the phone asks you to.
Samsung’s US and UK support instructions do not set one battery percentage that applies to every Galaxy model. Charge the phone adequately and follow the battery instruction displayed for your device. Keep it connected to power if the phone recommends that during installation.
What happens while the update installs?
The phone is unavailable during installation. Samsung warns that calls cannot be made or received and files cannot be accessed while the update is running. Do not power the phone off, remove its battery, or interrupt the process. Wait for the restart and the normal lock screen before using it again.

Check the installed version afterward
To see what is currently installed, open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) and select Software information. Record the Android version, One UI version and security-patch level if you need to contact Samsung or your carrier. Those details identify the exact software state more reliably than the phone’s marketing name alone.
Can I update my Galaxy with a computer?
Yes. Samsung Smart Switch can provide an update when the Galaxy device is connected to a Windows PC or Mac with a USB data cable. It is an alternative route, not a guarantee that a delayed over-the-air update will already be available.
Smart Switch update steps
- Install and open Samsung Smart Switch on the computer.
- Connect the Galaxy phone or tablet with a USB cable that supports data transfer. The cable supplied with the device may be used; try your existing cable first.
- Unlock the Galaxy device and approve any USB or trust prompt.
- In Smart Switch, select Update if that option appears.
- Read the displayed version and instructions, then start the update.
- Leave the cable connected and do not use the phone until Smart Switch reports completion. The device may restart more than once.
A cable that only charges will not provide the required data connection. If Smart Switch does not detect the phone, try another USB port or a known data-capable cable, then reconnect after restarting the application.

Why is my Samsung update not showing up?
A missing update does not by itself prove that a Galaxy phone is unsupported. Samsung and carriers release software by exact model, market and network, and new releases can arrive in waves.
Work through this check in order
- Confirm the software state. Open Settings > About phone/tablet > Software information and note the model and current security-patch level. Make sure you are checking the correct device.
- Check carrier timing. For an unlocked phone originally sold for a particular carrier, Samsung says that original carrier handles updates in some circumstances. A carrier can approve, test or delay a release even when Samsung has announced it elsewhere.
- Use Wi‑Fi. Some carriers block or defer large downloads over mobile data. Connect to Wi‑Fi, return to Software update, and check again.
- Consider the SIM requirement. Samsung says that, in some cases, a phone unlocked by its original carrier may need an original-carrier SIM before the update is offered. This is a carrier-specific condition, not a universal rule for every unlocked Galaxy.
- Allow for a staged rollout. A newly released update may be distributed gradually. Check again later rather than assuming the device has been excluded. Samsung’s support material does not provide one universal rollout deadline.
- Try Smart Switch. Connect the phone to a computer and check whether Smart Switch offers Update. Some carriers also provide their own update utility.
If none of these steps produces an update, check the support information for the exact model and carrier. Eligibility, release date and update cadence can differ between regional variants that have similar retail names.
What do I do if a Galaxy software update keeps failing?
Insufficient storage
If the phone reports that it does not have enough space, remove or move enough content to meet the amount shown on screen. Start with large videos, downloaded files and apps you no longer use, and empty the relevant trash or recycle bins. Do not delete personal data without confirming that it is backed up.

Incomplete or interrupted download
Samsung says an incomplete download may be resumable from the update notification. Open the notification and continue the download instead of starting an unnecessary reset. Keep the device on a stable connection and avoid switching networks during the transfer.

Repeated download failures
Use Smart Switch on a computer as the next route. Connect by USB, select Update when offered, and leave the cable attached through the restart and completion messages. Smart Switch can sometimes complete an update that repeatedly fails in the phone’s update screen, but it cannot create an update that Samsung or the carrier has not released for that model.
The phone will not boot after the failure
A Galaxy that cannot boot normally after an update failure needs service or reflashing support. Samsung’s support guidance says, “If the device fails to boot normally after an update fails, service will be required to reflash the device.” Do not repeatedly interrupt startup or attempt unofficial firmware procedures unless a qualified service provider directs you.

Should I factory-reset first?
No. A factory data reset is not an initial fix for a missing or failed update. Recovery and reset actions can erase data. If Samsung support eventually instructs you to reset, make a backup first and verify that important photos, contacts, messages and authenticator data can be restored.
What if my phone has bugs after an update?
First establish whether the installation actually completed and whether the symptom remains after a normal restart. Then check Settings > Software update for a later release. Samsung may correct problems in a subsequent update, and the exact model’s release notes or Samsung Members support channels may describe known issues.
- Write down the model number, Android and One UI versions, security-patch date and the time the symptom began.
- Check whether the problem occurs consistently or only in one app, network or accessory.
- Install app updates from the Galaxy Store or Google Play when the symptom is limited to an app.
- Use Samsung Members or official support for model-specific diagnostics before erasing the phone.
Official Samsung materials used for this guidance do not establish a quantified failure rate or prove that a particular update causes a particular symptom. A symptom on one phone is therefore not evidence of a universal bug, and it should not be diagnosed without model-specific information.

How long will my Galaxy get software updates?
Separate operating-system upgrades from security updates. An OS-upgrade promise concerns major Android or One UI generations. A security-update promise concerns patches and may continue after the last major OS upgrade. The number of years is not universal across the Galaxy range.
| Samsung policy or announcement | OS-upgrade commitment | Security-update commitment | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Mobile Security policy, stated as of January 2024 | Not a single range-wide OS number | Eligible Galaxy devices may receive up to seven years | “Up to” is a maximum for eligible models. Samsung says timing and availability vary by model, market and network provider. |
| Galaxy S24 series announcement from Samsung Mobile Press | Seven generations of OS upgrades | Seven years of security updates | This is the commitment described for the S24 series; availability and timing can still vary by device model and market. |
| Samsung Newsroom US announcement in 2022 for select devices | Four generations of OS upgrades | Up to five years | This earlier commitment applied to selected devices, illustrating why launch generation and exact model matter. |
Samsung Mobile Security describes the newer policy this way: “As of January 2024, we are extending our security update support for Samsung Galaxy devices by up to 7 years.” That wording is a policy maximum, not a promise that every Galaxy phone receives seven years.
When Samsung announced the S24 series, it described “seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates.” Treat that statement as applying to the products and markets covered by that announcement, not automatically to every Galaxy model released before or after it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should I compare update support between two Galaxy models?
Do not compare phones using one undifferentiated “years of updates” figure. Check four separate items for each exact regional model:
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| OS upgrades | How many Android or One UI generations Samsung promises. |
| Security updates | How long patches are promised after launch and whether the statement says “up to.” |
| Cadence | Whether the model is listed for monthly, quarterly or another schedule while supported. |
| Regional and carrier conditions | Whether release timing, availability or eligibility changes by market, network provider or model variant. |
A phone can receive security patches for longer than it receives major OS upgrades. Conversely, a headline policy for a newer flagship does not retroactively rewrite the support commitment for an older or lower-tier model.
Practical precautions before updating
- Back up important data before a major update, especially if the phone is already unstable.
- Use Wi‑Fi when the carrier or device recommends it, and ensure the battery is adequately charged.
- Keep sufficient free storage for the download and installation.
- Do not disconnect a Smart Switch cable or use the phone while installation is in progress.
- Keep the phone’s model number and current software information available if you need carrier or Samsung support.
These precautions reduce avoidable interruptions, but they cannot make an unreleased carrier build appear or extend a model’s official support period.
