Choose the tracker that matches your phone ecosystem. Galaxy SmartTag2 is built for Samsung Galaxy devices and SmartThings Find, while AirTag is built for iPhone, iPad and Apple’s Find My network. Neither is a sensible cross-platform tracker for someone who needs to set up and manage it from any Android phone or iPhone. Check your exact phone, operating-system version and tag generation before buying.
Quick verdict: match the tag to your phone
| If you use | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet | Galaxy SmartTag2 | It uses SmartThings Find, Samsung account features and Galaxy Find Network participation. |
| An iPhone or iPad | Apple AirTag | It uses Find My, Apple ID and Apple’s Find My network. |
| A mixed Android-and-iPhone household | Neither as a universal manager | Setup, sharing and the main finding features are tied to the manufacturer’s platform. |
| An Android phone that is not a supported Galaxy model | Check before purchasing | SmartTag2’s detailed feature requirements are stricter than its broad device-compatibility line. |
The crowd-network question has no universal winner here. Samsung and Apple describe different networks, but the available specifications do not provide an independent, city-by-city comparison of device density, update speed or reliability. Local results depend on participating phones, buildings and travel routes.
The practical rule is simple: buy for the phone you carry every day, not the phone a family member might occasionally borrow. A tracker is most useful when its app, account, notifications and nearby-finding tools are already part of your normal setup. If you change from Galaxy to iPhone, or vice versa, treat that as a platform change rather than assuming the tag will transfer seamlessly.

Phone compatibility and account requirements
Galaxy SmartTag2 requirements
Samsung’s US product information says SmartTag2 setup and remote-finding capabilities require a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 11 or later, at least 3 GB of free RAM, SmartThings Find opt-in and a Samsung account. SmartThings Find registration is required for the tag’s remote features.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Samsung also lists Galaxy devices running Android 9 or later in a general compatibility specification. That broader line does not mean every SmartTag2 feature works with the same minimum software or memory. For buying purposes, use the stricter Android 11-and-3-GB requirement when you need setup, remote finding or advanced features.
This distinction matters when a phone is several years old or has limited free memory. A device may appear in a general compatibility list yet fail an individual feature check after an operating-system or app update. Confirm the model, Android version and available RAM on the actual phone that will own the tag. A Samsung account and SmartThings Find opt-in are also part of the ownership setup, not optional extras for remote locating.
AirTag requirements
Apple’s original AirTag technical specifications list an Apple ID, an iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 14.5 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 14.5 or later. Apple’s newer support guidance identifies iOS 26.2.1 or later for AirTag (2nd generation) in its documented Find Nearby workflow. Do not apply original-generation requirements automatically to a newer tag.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf your phone is an iPhone, verify the AirTag generation and update iOS before purchase. If your phone is Android, AirTag is not a normal Android-managed tracker: the principal setup and account functions belong to Find My and Apple devices.
Generation and software checks are especially important when buying a tag that has been stored for a while, received as a gift or bundled with older accessories. Read the model information on the packaging or in the seller’s listing, then compare it with Apple’s current compatibility guidance. Do not infer support solely from the fact that an iPhone can detect an unfamiliar Bluetooth tracker.
What this means for mixed households
A tag can be physically attached to a shared suitcase or pet carrier, but the person who needs to configure, share and locate it should use the matching platform. Do not buy one assuming that an iPhone owner can fully manage a SmartTag2, or that a Galaxy owner can fully manage an AirTag.
Sharing a physical item is different from sharing ownership of the account. Decide who will receive lost-item notifications, replace the battery and respond if the tag is reported moving with someone. For a household using both platforms, labeling the tag and recording its owner can prevent confusion when a suitcase is handed from one person to another.

| Capability | SmartTag2 | AirTag |
|---|---|---|
| Nearby radio | Bluetooth, with a built-in buzzer | Bluetooth, with a built-in speaker |
| Directional precision | Compass View using UWB on supported Galaxy phones | Precision Finding using UWB on supported Apple devices |
| Out-of-range locating | Galaxy Find Network through opted-in Galaxy devices | Apple Find My network through participating Apple devices |
| Other locating function | SmartThings Find map and tag sound | Find My map, directions, sound and NFC-based Lost Mode |
SmartTag2 nearby search
When the tag is within Bluetooth range, SmartThings Find can help you search for it and activate its buzzer. Samsung quotes up to 120 metres without obstacles. Walls, furniture and other obstructions can reduce both range and accuracy; the figure is a manufacturer specification, not a controlled comparison with AirTag.
Compass View adds directional guidance through ultra-wideband (UWB), but only with supported UWB-enabled Galaxy phones. Samsung’s feature notes also require Android 11 or later for this capability. If your Galaxy lacks UWB, you can still use Bluetooth finding and the sound, but not the same directional view.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
In a house or office, start with the map or last-known location, then trigger the sound while walking slowly. A quiet buzzer, a tag buried under clothing or a phone separated by several walls can make the final few metres harder than the marketing range suggests. Keep the app open and check for a location change rather than repeatedly assuming the tag is out of battery.
AirTag nearby search
AirTag uses Bluetooth and its speaker for proximity finding. Precision Finding requires compatible UWB hardware. Apple’s documented newer workflow says Find Nearby works on iPhone 15 and later; confirm support for your exact AirTag generation and iPhone model. Apple warns that wall materials and objects between the phone and tag can affect the result.
AirTag also supports Lost Mode. A finder with an NFC-capable phone can read the tag’s contact information when you have enabled the feature, subject to the information you choose to provide. Review that contact information before travel, and provide only what you are comfortable making available to someone who finds the item.
Finding an item when it is out of range
SmartTag2 can be located through Galaxy Find Network when it is outside your phone’s Bluetooth range. Samsung describes this as relying on opted-in Galaxy users whose devices come within range of the tag. AirTag similarly reports through Apple’s Find My network. Neither specification establishes which network is better in your neighbourhood, office, airport or travel route, so ecosystem fit is the defensible deciding factor.
An out-of-range map point is not a live GPS position. It represents a report from a nearby participating device and can become stale if the item moves, enters a shielded building or passes through an area with few participating phones. Use the time of the last update when deciding whether to retrace a route, contact a venue or report a lost bag.
Battery life, water resistance and physical attachment
| Specification | Galaxy SmartTag2 | Original Apple AirTag |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | User-replaceable CR2032; up to 500 days under Samsung’s typical-use claim | User-replaceable CR2032 |
| Power-saving option | Samsung says Power Saving Mode can provide up to 40% more life, with basic Bluetooth finding only | Not stated in the cited original specifications |
| Water and dust rating | IP67; up to 1 metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes under stated test conditions | IP67; maximum 1 metre for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529 |
| Attachment hardware | Cases with carabiner rings are sold separately | A compatible holder or key ring is normally needed for keys, bags or luggage |
Interpreting the battery figures
“Up to 500 days” is Samsung’s typical-use estimate, not a guaranteed runtime. Usage pattern, wireless activity, temperature and signal conditions affect it. Power Saving Mode is not a free performance upgrade: Samsung limits it to basic Bluetooth finding, so choose it only if that trade-off suits the item.

A replacement is an ownership item for later, not a battery you must purchase alongside the tracker.
Plan a battery check before a long trip, move or period when the item will be unattended. If the app reports a low cell, replace it promptly and test the sound and nearby search afterward. Keep the replacement specification at CR2032, and follow the tag’s battery-compartment instructions rather than forcing the cover.
Water resistance is not permanent waterproofing
SmartTag2’s IP67 statement covers up to 1 metre of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung advises rinsing residue and drying the tag after it gets wet. The original AirTag has the same IP67 depth-and-time rating under IEC 60529, and Apple says water resistance can decrease through normal wear. Do not treat either rating as permission for prolonged submersion, salt water exposure or high-pressure water.

IP67 describes laboratory test conditions, not every real-world spill. A cracked case, worn seal, impact or repeated exposure can reduce protection. If you attach a tag to luggage, a bicycle or outdoor equipment, let it dry before putting it inside a sealed pocket and inspect the holder for damage.
Plan the attachment before buying
SmartTag2 cases that add a carabiner ring can make the tag easier to clip to luggage or a key set, but those cases are separate purchases. AirTag is a smooth disc, so a generation-compatible holder or key ring is usually required. Check the holder’s fit if you are buying for AirTag (2nd generation); accessories designed for one generation should not be assumed to fit another.
Place the tag where it can be heard and where nearby phones can detect it, while keeping it secure against pulling or abrasion. A loose accessory can be the reason an item is lost even when the tracker itself is working.
Setup checklist
Set up Galaxy SmartTag2
- Confirm that the phone is a supported Samsung Galaxy model running Android 11 or later and has at least 3 GB of free RAM.
- Sign in to a Samsung account and install or update the SmartThings app.
- Opt in to SmartThings Find and register the tag when prompted.
- Attach the tag to the item, give it a recognisable name and test the buzzer while you are nearby.
- Enable the relevant location and notification permissions so SmartThings Find can report the tag and alert you when appropriate.
If the tag appears compatible under Samsung’s broad Android 9 line but setup or remote features fail, check the detailed Android 11, RAM, account and SmartThings Find requirements first.
Set up an AirTag
- Confirm that your iPhone or iPad meets the requirement for your AirTag generation. Original AirTag specifications list iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later; Apple’s newer Find Nearby guidance lists iOS 26.2.1 or later for AirTag (2nd generation).
- Sign in to the Apple ID you will use with Find My and turn on Bluetooth and location-related permissions.
- Bring the tag close to the device and follow the on-screen pairing prompt.
- Assign a name, attach a generation-compatible holder if needed and play a test sound.
- Review Lost Mode and unwanted-tracking notifications before placing the tag in luggage, keys or another frequently moved item.
If setup or finding fails
First check the simple causes: Bluetooth, location access, account sign-in, app updates and a charged phone. Move the tag next to the phone during pairing, remove thick packaging or a damaged holder and retry. If nearby finding works but remote updates do not, verify that network-finding participation and notifications are enabled, then consider whether the item is in a place with few participating devices. A failed remote update does not by itself prove the tracker is defective.

Safety, privacy and responsible use
Trackers are intended for belongings, not for secretly monitoring people. Apple explicitly says AirTag and compatible trackers should not be used to track people or property without permission. Its safety guidance explains unwanted-tracking notifications and how to disable a tracker that has been found with someone.
Apple also says it worked with Google on an industry specification intended to alert people across iOS and Android when a compatible Bluetooth tracker appears to be moving with them. This cross-platform safety work does not turn either product into a cross-platform management device.
Samsung product material mentions unknown-tag alerts, but the cited Samsung information does not provide an equivalently detailed, current procedure. Do not assume that alert timing, wording or disabling steps are identical between the two ecosystems. If an unfamiliar tracker is traveling with you, use the operating system’s alert and safety instructions and seek help when you feel unsafe.
For legitimate shared use, tell the other people who may carry the tagged item and decide who controls the account. Never hide a tracker in someone else’s bag or vehicle without permission. The same notification systems intended to protect people can also help identify an unauthorized tag, so responsible setup protects both the owner and bystanders.

Which tracker should you buy?
Choose SmartTag2 when
- Your everyday phone is a compatible Samsung Galaxy device.
- You already use SmartThings Find and want your tags in the same account.
- You have a supported UWB Galaxy phone and want Compass View.
- You prefer a tag design that can be fitted with a separately sold carabiner case.
- You want Samsung’s stated up-to-500-day typical-use battery claim and are comfortable with its Power Saving Mode limitations.
Choose AirTag when
- Your everyday phone is an iPhone or iPad using Find My.
- You want Apple’s Find My map, speaker, NFC Lost Mode and supported Precision Finding workflow.
- You are prepared to verify the exact AirTag generation and current iOS requirement.
- You are comfortable buying a separate holder for keys or luggage.
- You want the tag integrated with the Apple account and devices you already use rather than adding Samsung services.
Pause before buying when
- You expect to configure the tag from both Android and iPhone interchangeably.
- Your phone lacks the required OS version, RAM, account or UWB hardware.
- You are choosing solely on quoted range or network coverage. Neither manufacturer’s figures are a head-to-head independent test.
- You need covert tracking of a person. That is unsafe, inappropriate and contrary to the products’ intended use.
- You have not budgeted for the attachment hardware your item needs, especially a holder for the disc-shaped AirTag or a separate SmartTag2 case.
Common questions answered
Does Samsung SmartTag2 work with iPhone?
It is not designed for normal iPhone setup and management. SmartTag2’s documented setup and remote features require a Samsung Galaxy device, Samsung account and SmartThings Find.
Does AirTag work with Android?
AirTag’s normal setup and management require Apple devices and Find My. Android phones may participate in industry-standard unwanted-tracker alerts for compatible devices, but that is not the same as managing an AirTag as its owner.
Do I need a Samsung phone for SmartTag2?
For the documented setup and remote capabilities, Samsung specifies a Galaxy smartphone or tablet with Android 11 or later, at least 3 GB of free RAM, SmartThings Find opt-in and a Samsung account.
Can I use AirTag with a Samsung Galaxy?
Not as a normal owner-managed tracker. If your primary phone is a Samsung Galaxy, SmartTag2 is the platform-matched choice; confirm your Galaxy model and software first.
Which has better range?
Samsung publishes up to 120 metres without obstacles for SmartTag2, but that is a manufacturer claim under stated conditions, not a controlled comparison with AirTag. Walls, furniture and radio conditions matter more than a single headline number in many homes.
Which crowd network is more reliable?
There is no defensible universal answer from the published specifications. Galaxy Find Network depends on opted-in Galaxy devices, while Find My depends on participating Apple devices. Coverage can change from one building, city or travel route to another.
Can I replace the battery?
Yes. Both the original AirTag specifications and SmartTag2 specifications identify a user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Each ships with a battery installed, so the replacement is a later maintenance purchase.
Are the trackers waterproof?
Both are rated IP67 under the cited manufacturer conditions, including up to 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. That is not a promise of permanent waterproofing; wear, impact, residue, salt water and high-pressure water can reduce protection.
Do I need a case or holder?
SmartTag2 cases with carabiner rings are sold separately. AirTag’s smooth disc generally needs a compatible holder or key ring for attachment. Check that an accessory fits the exact generation you own.
