A Samsung Galaxy SIM problem can stem from a temporary software error, a SIM that is damaged or seated incorrectly, mobile network settings, or a carrier activation or account issue. First check whether the phone recognizes the SIM; then restart and, if it is a physical SIM, power off the phone before reseating it. Cross-testing with another active SIM can help determine whether to contact your carrier or Samsung service.
What “No SIM card detected” and “Emergency calls only” can mean
“No SIM card detected” means the Galaxy is not recognizing a SIM. Possible causes include a temporary system error, a damaged, dirty, or poorly seated physical SIM, or a device or tray problem. Samsung notes that “Temporary system errors may prevent the SIM card from being recognized properly.” A no-SIM alert alone does not establish that the phone is broken.
“Emergency calls only” or no service is different: the phone may recognize a SIM but still lack an active line or normal carrier service. An inactive SIM or eSIM, activation or account issue, carrier restriction, or network setting may be involved. For eSIM activation during initial setup, Samsung directs users to their carrier.
Check whether the Galaxy recognizes the SIM
- Open Settings > About phone > Status information > SIM card status.
- Check whether the carrier appears under Network. If it is absent, the phone may not recognize the SIM, or the line may not be active.
Menu names and paths can vary by Galaxy model, software version, and region. Samsung’s support pages provide guidance for US and India users; follow the on-screen labels for your device if they differ.

Restart the phone
Use the on-screen power menu to restart. If touch is unresponsive, Samsung’s US instructions say to hold the Side and Volume down buttons for more than seven seconds to restart. Button combinations can vary by model.
Reseat a physical SIM carefully
- Power the phone off before removing the SIM tray.
- Use a SIM eject pin straight into the tray hole. Pull the tray out gently; do not bend or force it.
- Check that the Nano-SIM sits correctly in the tray, using the tray markings or your model’s instructions to confirm orientation.
- Push the tray fully back into the phone without forcing it, then power the phone on.
Samsung’s guidance on contact orientation is not universal across Galaxy models: its US SIM-specific page says most models place the gold contacts upward, while its broader signal guidance says orientation varies by device. Use the markings for your phone rather than assuming one orientation. If the contacts look dirty, wipe them gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid touching the metal contacts or inserting the card incorrectly. A SIM eject pin may already have come with the phone.

Reset mobile network settings if the basics do not help
Go to Settings > General management > Reset > Reset mobile network settings, then review the confirmation prompt before proceeding. This removes saved mobile network configuration so the phone can reconnect using default settings. It is not a repair for a damaged SIM or a carrier activation block. Samsung distinguishes this reset from resetting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.
Use SIM cross-tests to narrow down the cause
If you can, test another active SIM in the Galaxy, or put the suspect SIM into another compatible phone. The results are clues, not a definitive diagnosis; a carrier or device issue can require further checks.

| Test result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The suspect SIM works in another compatible phone, but not in the Galaxy. | The Galaxy, its SIM tray, or its settings may be involved. The test does not by itself prove a hardware fault. | Try the restart, careful reseating, and mobile network reset steps. If a known working, active SIM also fails in the Galaxy, contact Samsung service. |
| Another active SIM works in the Galaxy, but the suspect SIM does not. | The suspect SIM or its carrier activation or account status is more likely involved. | Contact the carrier about activation, protection, or SIM replacement. |
| Neither SIM is recognized in the Galaxy. | A device or tray issue is possible, though the test alone is not conclusive. | Confirm that the test SIMs are active and compatible. If a working, active SIM still fails, request Samsung service. |
Run a SIM diagnostic if Samsung Members is installed
On devices with Samsung Members, open Members > Support > Get started > SIM, then follow the on-screen directions. The available path or diagnostic options may vary by device.
Know when to contact the carrier or Samsung
Contact the carrier
Samsung says, “Most issues with your SIM card will need to be resolved by your carrier.” Contact the carrier for eSIM activation during initial setup, a SIM that needs activation or replacement, or persistent SIM and account activation problems. Some carriers offer SIM protection that can prevent activation on a new device; if that protection is enabled, the carrier must disable it.
Contact Samsung service
Request Samsung service if a known working, active SIM still is not recognized after the basic checks, or if the SIM tray is damaged or the phone has liquid exposure. Samsung’s instructions do not establish a single diagnostic test that proves which component has failed, so describe the cross-test results and any physical damage when seeking help.
