To check a microSD card on a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, open My Files and look under storage locations for SD card. Tap it to browse the card’s files. If you need used and available space, check the storage details shown on your device; menus and screens vary by model, provider, and software version.

Check whether your Galaxy has an SD card slot

Not every Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet supports microSD cards. Confirm support for your exact model before looking for a card setting or buying a card. For example, Samsung’s Singapore guide notes that Galaxy S21 models do not have a microSD slot; that example does not establish support for other Galaxy models. Samsung’s Galaxy file-management guide explains how to work with files on supported devices.

Find and browse the SD card in My Files

  1. Insert the microSD card into the device, if it has a slot.
  2. Open My Files.
  3. Look under the storage locations for SD card. Samsung says this location appears only when a card is inserted.
  4. Tap SD card to browse its folders and files.

Samsung describes My Files as the app for browsing files by category and storage location. The names and appearance of screens can vary by provider and software version, so there is no single Settings path or capacity display that applies to every Galaxy device. Check the storage information available on your own device for used and available space. See Samsung’s guide to microSD cards and Galaxy phones or tablets and its file-management instructions.

If the SD card does not appear

Check device support and card placement

First verify that your exact Galaxy model supports microSD. If it does, make sure the card is seated correctly. A device without a card slot cannot show an SD card location in My Files.

Reinsert the card and test it elsewhere

If a supported device still does not recognize the card, remove it and reinsert it. Samsung also suggests testing the card with another device. If it remains unrecognized, it may be damaged. Follow Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for SD card issues on a Samsung phone or tablet.

Do not format before backing up

Formatting erases the data stored on the card. Back up any files you can access and make sure you have selected the correct card before confirming a format. Samsung’s SD card troubleshooting guide includes formatting guidance.

Card type Capacity band listed by Samsung
microSD Up to 2 GB
microSDHC Over 2 GB up to 32 GB
microSDXC Over 32 GB up to 2 TB

These are card-format capacity bands, not a guarantee that a particular Galaxy model supports every capacity in a band. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video and describes microSD or microSDHC as options for less demanding still photography. Check the exact device’s compatibility and capacity limits before choosing a card. See Samsung’s microSD guidance.

Apps do not all move to microSD

Samsung says some apps may offer a move option under Settings > Apps > [app] > Storage > Change. If Change is absent, that app’s storage location cannot be changed. Samsung also states, “Samsung Android devices do not support the Adoptable storage feature.” A card can hold files, but it should not be treated as a universal way to merge with or expand internal storage. Read Samsung’s microSD support page and SD card troubleshooting guidance.
