Short answer: As of 14 October 2026, leaks repeatedly point to a 16MP front camera with autofocus and optical image stabilization (OIS) for both the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra. The regular Galaxy S27 may retain Samsung’s current 12MP front camera, but that is only an inference in reporting. Samsung has not published final S27 specifications, so every camera detail below remains unconfirmed until official product pages and shipping hardware appear.

The table separates what has been reported from what remains unknown. “Reported” means a leak or database-based account, not a Samsung specification. No independent hands-on testing exists because these phones were not officially released when this comparison was prepared.

The clearest reported split is between the Pro and Ultra on one side and the unresolved base model on the other. That does not establish that the Pro and Ultra will produce identical selfies: lens design, pixel size, optics, processing and lighting can all change results even when sensor resolution matches.
What the current reports actually establish
SamMobile’s July 24 report
A 24 July 2026 SamMobile report says the Galaxy S27 Pro is “said to have” a 16MP front-facing camera with autofocus and OIS, while the Ultra is “also said to have” those features. The wording describes an attributed leak, not an announcement from Samsung. Treat the three specifications—resolution, autofocus and stabilization—as separate claims that still require confirmation.

Earlier 16MP and square-sensor reporting
SamMobile’s 2 July 2026 coverage also described 16MP front cameras for the Pro and Ultra and discussed the possibility of a square sensor. Android Authority independently summarized the 16MP claim and noted uncertainty around the base S27. Both outlets present the square format as speculation. Samsung has not confirmed the sensor geometry or any Center Stage-style behavior.
Evidence for the model lineup
A 25 June 2026 SamMobile report cited GSMA database records for the S27 Pro and related devices. Database appearances support the existence of model names in development, but they do not provide a final camera bill of materials, retail date or complete software specification.
What Samsung’s official material does—and does not—say
Samsung Electronics’ 2026 first-quarter interim report provides predecessor context for the Galaxy S26. It does not confirm S27 camera specifications. Therefore, no S27 front-camera feature in this article should be read as an official Samsung commitment.

Reports do not confirm a new front sensor for the regular S27. Some coverage expects Samsung’s current 12MP front camera to continue, but that is an inference rather than a final specification. The resolution, lens, focus system, stabilization and sensor format could all change before launch.

Because the base phone is the least documented of the three, shoppers should not assume that it receives the Pro and Ultra feature set. In particular, there is no reliable evidence at present for autofocus, OIS, a square sensor, particular video frame rates, HDR behavior or software framing tools on the standard model.
If the 12MP expectation proves accurate, the number alone will not determine image quality. A well-tuned 12MP system can outperform a higher-resolution sensor in difficult light, while processing, lens brightness, pixel size and skin-tone rendering can produce larger visible differences than megapixels.
Galaxy S27 Pro: reported front-camera upgrades
The Pro is repeatedly associated with a 16MP front camera. The detailed July 24 report additionally attributes autofocus and OIS to it. These are meaningful potential changes for people who take portraits at different distances, record handheld video or use the camera in uneven light, but their practical value cannot be measured until a shipping phone is tested.

What autofocus could change
Fixed-focus selfie cameras are optimized around a limited distance range. Autofocus could let the S27 Pro adjust for a face held closer to the phone, a group standing farther away or an arm extended on a selfie stick. It might also improve consistency when the subject is not exactly where the lens expects. Autofocus does not guarantee sharper pictures in every situation; focusing speed, focus accuracy and Samsung’s processing still matter.

What OIS could change
Optical image stabilization physically compensates for small movements of the phone. In still photos, that may reduce blur from hand motion when the shutter can remain open longer. During video, stabilization can make handheld footage look steadier. OIS cannot freeze a moving subject, eliminate walking motion by itself or compensate for poor lighting and aggressive digital cropping. The leak does not state the stabilization range, video modes or whether electronic stabilization would operate at the same time.
Galaxy S27 Ultra: the same reported front-camera specification, not a proven result
The Ultra is also reported to use a 16MP front camera with autofocus and OIS. On paper, that places its selfie hardware alongside the Pro rather than above it in resolution or the two named features. A shared specification does not prove equal output: the lens, aperture, image signal processing, thermal behavior and software tuning may differ, and none of those details has been officially published.
There is currently no defensible basis for claiming that the Ultra will have a higher-resolution selfie sensor than the Pro, a unique front-camera lens, or better low-light selfies. Those distinctions should be assessed only after Samsung releases complete specifications and independent reviewers test retail units.

Why 16MP does not automatically mean better selfies
Resolution describes how many pixels a sensor records; it does not measure the total quality of the camera system. A front camera’s result depends on several interacting parts:

- Pixel size and sensor efficiency: Larger or more efficient pixels can capture cleaner data in dim rooms, while a dense sensor may rely more heavily on noise reduction.
- Lens design: Edge sharpness, distortion and flare depend on the optics, not just the sensor count.
- Processing: Exposure, white balance, HDR, texture preservation and skin-tone rendering can make two sensors with the same resolution look very different.
- Field of view: A wider lens fits more people but can stretch faces near the edge; a narrower lens may look more natural for a single portrait.
- Lighting and movement: A bright, steady scene can hide limitations that become obvious in a dark room or during motion.
Consequently, the reported 16MP figure is a useful hardware distinction, but it is not an image-quality verdict. No controlled S27 comparison is available yet.
Square-sensor speculation and flexible framing
SamMobile and Android Authority have discussed a possible square 16MP sensor for the Pro and Ultra. A square imaging area could allow the phone to capture a common source frame and then crop it for portrait or landscape orientation without rotating the sensor. In principle, that could support automatic reframing for a group or a speaker who moves within the frame, conceptually similar to Apple’s Center Stage approach.
This remains a possibility, not a product feature. Samsung has not confirmed a square sensor, an automatic tracking mode, a Center Stage-like name, or the crop limits that would determine how much resolution remains after reframing. A square sensor also does not automatically provide a wider field of view; the lens and software crop still set the usable composition.
Front-camera video and software: the unanswered questions
No cited report supplies confirmed S27 front-camera video modes, frame rates, HDR behavior or software tools. Do not extrapolate these details from the Galaxy S26 or from Samsung’s other phones.

At launch, buyers should specifically check whether each model supports the following, and under what restrictions:
- Maximum front-camera resolution and frame rate in standard and high-dynamic-range video.
- Whether autofocus remains active during video or is limited to still photos.
- Whether OIS works in every video mode or only selected resolutions.
- Portrait-video, background-blur and face-tracking options.
- Automatic subject reframing, if the square-sensor rumor becomes real.
- Low-light video processing, wind-noise reduction and external-microphone support.
- Whether third-party apps receive the same camera capabilities as Samsung’s camera app.
These details can materially change the experience for creators, video callers and families recording group clips, yet none is established for the S27 family today.

What to verify when Samsung launches the phones
- Read the official product pages. Confirm the front-camera megapixels, focus method, stabilization type and sensor dimensions for each regional model.
- Check the full specification sheets. Look for front-video resolutions, frame rates, HDR, lens field of view and restrictions by mode.
- Inspect the camera app. Test whether autofocus can lock at close and arm’s-length distances, and whether any tracking or reframing option is exposed to users.
- Compare stills in controlled conditions. Use the same lighting, distance and framing for all three phones; include daylight, indoor light and a moving subject.
- Test stabilization separately. Record stationary handheld clips, walking footage and low-light scenes. OIS may help small hand movements but cannot replace electronic stabilization or a steady grip.
- Check third-party apps. Video-call and social apps may use different camera APIs and may not expose every Samsung camera feature.
- Confirm the exact regional model. Samsung can vary hardware, firmware or enabled features by market, carrier and software version.
Pre-release risks buyers should understand
Leaks can change before retail release
Engineering samples, database entries and supply-chain reports can describe hardware that is later revised or disabled. Even a repeated claim is not confirmation. The Pro and Ultra 16MP, autofocus and OIS reports should therefore be treated as provisional until Samsung publishes specifications.
Model names do not guarantee identical cameras
A Pro and an Ultra can share a sensor while using different lenses or processing. Conversely, two phones can use different sensors yet produce similar results in daylight. Compare complete camera specifications and test images rather than relying on the model hierarchy.
Availability is not established
The available evidence supports development of the S27 lineup but does not establish a retail launch date, regional sales plan or final configuration. There is no verified current retail listing that can be used as a reliable S27 specification source.
Bottom line for the S27 front-camera comparison
The Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra are the only models with repeated reports of a 16MP selfie camera, autofocus and OIS. The regular S27 may keep a 12MP camera, but even that is an expectation rather than a confirmed specification. A square sensor and Center Stage-like framing remain speculation, and front-video capabilities, software tools, pricing and availability are unknown. Until Samsung releases official product pages and independent testing begins, the Pro and Ultra have the stronger reported selfie hardware on paper, not a proven image-quality advantage.
