Buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max if you need a flagship now. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, and it has been available since September 19, 2025. Samsung has not announced a Galaxy S27 Ultra as of October 18, 2026, so there is no verified S27 price, release date, battery capacity, camera specification or performance result to compare.
Waiting makes sense only if you specifically want Samsung’s S Pen, Android and DeX workflow, or the Ultra line’s long-zoom approach. If you cannot wait, Samsung’s released Galaxy S26 Ultra is the relevant phone to consider—not an unannounced S27.
The decision in one sentence
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is the only confirmed choice between these two names today. It starts at $1,199 in the United States with 256GB and offers a documented 6.9-inch 120Hz display, a three-camera 48MP Fusion system, Apple’s strongest stated iPhone battery claim and mature iOS 26 integration. The Galaxy S27 Ultra remains an unannounced product. Any article presenting precise S27 specifications as settled fact is relying on rumor or placeholders rather than Samsung documentation.
What is actually available?
iPhone 17 Pro Max: announced and shipping
Apple announced the iPhone 17 Pro Max on September 9, 2025. The phone went on sale September 19, 2025, with a United States starting price of $1,199 for 256GB. Storage, taxes, carrier terms and prices outside the United States can differ, so treat that figure as the U.S. launch price rather than a universal cost.

- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Galaxy S27 Ultra: not announced
Samsung’s official 2026 release material documents the Galaxy S26 family, not an S27 Ultra. As of October 18, 2026, Samsung has not published an S27 Ultra announcement date, release date, price, storage configuration, display specification, camera specification, battery capacity or performance result. Those omissions are material: they prevent a fair specification, value or camera winner from being declared.
Rumor videos, leaked renders and unofficial comparison tables may be interesting, but they cannot establish what Samsung will ship. Revisit the comparison after Samsung publishes primary S27 product documentation.

Display and physical experience
What the iPhone confirms
The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz. Apple rates outdoor peak brightness at up to 3,000 nits. A 120Hz adaptive panel can make scrolling and supported games look smoother than a fixed-refresh display, while the brightness figure is an outdoor peak rather than a promise that the screen stays at 3,000 nits continuously.

What the S27 does not confirm
Samsung has not stated the S27 Ultra’s panel technology, refresh behavior, brightness, dimensions or weight. Do not assume that the S26 Ultra’s screen figures carry over. If brightness, viewing size or hand feel is a deciding factor, the responsible choice is either the documented iPhone or a hands-on S27 evaluation after launch.
The released Samsung reference point
For context only, Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 6.9-inch 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X display and weighs 214g. Those are S26 specifications, not S27 specifications. They show the type of large-screen Ultra experience Samsung currently sells, but they do not predict an S27 chassis or weight.
Camera choice: video certainty versus Ultra-style zoom
iPhone 17 Pro Max camera system
Apple specifies three 48MP Fusion rear cameras and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. The front camera is an 18MP Center Stage design. This gives buyers a complete, documented camera package, including Apple’s established emphasis on stabilized video and consistent color across lenses. The available specifications do not, by themselves, prove that it beats every rival in still-photo detail; they establish what you receive today and the supported zoom description.

Why Samsung comparisons use the S26, not an imaginary S27
Samsung’s released Galaxy S26 Ultra provides the only official Ultra baseline available on the comparison date: a 200MP wide camera, 50MP ultrawide, 50MP 5x telephoto, 10MP 3x telephoto and up to 100x digital zoom. Multiple dedicated telephotos give the S26 a wider set of native focal lengths for distant subjects than the iPhone specification listed above. A 100x label describes digital zoom, however, not the same optical quality as a 5x camera.

None of those S26 numbers can be attributed to the S27 Ultra. Samsung could change sensors, crop behavior, processing or zoom limits. If your purchase decision depends on moon shots, concerts, wildlife or sports from a distance, wait for the S27 camera sheet and independent testing rather than treating S26 hardware as a guarantee.
Which camera approach fits which work?
- Choose the iPhone now for a known video workflow: you can buy the specified three-camera system and 18MP Center Stage front camera immediately, with Apple’s iOS and accessory ecosystem already supported.
- Favor Samsung’s Ultra concept for long-distance flexibility: the S26 reference has separate 3x and 5x telephotos and a 200MP main sensor. That is a reason to consider an S26 today or wait for S27 testing, not proof of an S27 advantage.
- Do not choose on megapixels alone: resolution does not establish dynamic range, autofocus reliability, stabilization, skin tones or video quality. Those S27 outcomes are unknown until Samsung documents and reviewers test the phone.
Battery life and charging
Apple’s documented claim
Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro Max offers “the best battery life ever in an iPhone,” attributing the result to its unibody design, a larger battery, A19 Pro efficiency and iOS 26 power management. This is Apple’s own product claim, not a directly comparable laboratory number against a Samsung phone.
Apple also says the phone can reach 50% charge in 20 minutes when used with an optional 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, which has a 60W maximum. The adapter is an extra accessory; the stated speed depends on the charger, cable, temperature, battery state and other charging conditions.
Samsung’s confirmed battery baseline
The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery according to Samsung. Capacity is a specification, not a runtime guarantee: processor efficiency, modem use, display brightness, camera recording, signal strength and software all affect how long a phone lasts. Samsung has not stated the S27 Ultra’s capacity or endurance, so no S27-versus-iPhone battery winner can be established today.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to decide if endurance matters
- Identify your actual constraint: all-day cellular use, navigation, video recording, gaming or simply fewer charging sessions.
- For an immediate purchase, compare your expected workload with independent tests of the iPhone 17 Pro Max and the currently available S26 Ultra; do not substitute a rumored S27 result.
- If you want Samsung but can wait, hold off until Samsung publishes S27 battery and charging specifications and reviewers measure sustained use.
- Budget for Apple’s optional 40W adapter if its 20-minute 50% claim is important to your routine.
Operating system, S Pen and desktop work
iOS 26 and Apple’s ecosystem
The iPhone 17 Pro Max runs iOS 26. Its strongest ecosystem case is continuity with Apple’s services, accessories and video-oriented workflows. That benefit is practical only if your existing devices and services are already in Apple’s ecosystem or you value the way iOS handles them. Moving from Android can involve transferring app data, passwords, media and accessories, so include migration effort in your decision.

Android, S Pen and DeX on Samsung’s Ultra line
Samsung documents S Pen support and DeX desktop functionality on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. An S Pen is useful for handwritten notes, precise selections, markup and remote-style controls; DeX can turn a compatible display and peripherals into a desktop-like workspace. Samsung has not confirmed that the S27 Ultra will retain every S26 feature, so treat these as reasons to consider the S26 or as features to verify when S27 information appears.
If your daily work depends on Android apps, Windows integration, expandable workflows or pen input, an iPhone can be a poor fit even if its hardware is excellent. Conversely, if you never use a stylus or desktop mode, paying a premium or waiting for an unannounced model for those features offers no clear benefit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance and software certainty
Apple identifies the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s efficiency platform as A19 Pro with iOS 26 power management. Samsung has not supplied S27 Ultra processor, memory, thermal or update details. Do not treat leaked benchmark numbers as purchase-grade evidence. For a phone needed now, choose based on the software and performance you can verify in the shipping product. For a future S27 purchase, wait for Samsung’s specifications and sustained-use testing, not a single benchmark screenshot.
Price, storage and total value
The iPhone’s known entry point
The iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at $1,199 in the U.S. with 256GB. That is the confirmed launch price cited by Apple. Local taxes, carrier financing, trade-in credits, storage upgrades and regional pricing can change the amount you actually pay. The phone’s value depends on how long you will keep it, whether you already own compatible accessories and whether its camera and ecosystem reduce switching costs.
The S27’s price is unknowable today
Samsung has not announced an S27 Ultra price or storage lineup. A rumored price cannot support a buy-now value calculation, and an apparent discount on an unofficial listing is not evidence of Samsung’s final retail terms. Wait for an official price before comparing equivalent storage capacities and launch promotions.
A Samsung phone you can buy today
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is Samsung’s released Ultra model as of this comparison date. Samsung announced it on February 25, 2026, and made it generally available March 11, 2026. Its official specifications include a 6.9-inch 120Hz display, 214g weight, 5,000mAh battery, S Pen support and the camera array described earlier. It is a legitimate alternative for an Android or S Pen buyer who cannot wait, but it should not be marketed as an S27 Ultra.
Who should buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max now?
- You need a phone immediately. It is announced, shipping and priced, while the S27 is not.
- You want a documented 6.9-inch 120Hz display and three-camera 48MP system. The relevant specifications are available before purchase.
- You rely on iOS services, Apple accessories or an established iPhone video workflow. Switching ecosystems can cost time and money beyond the handset price.
- You value Apple’s stated charging option and battery claim. Remember that the 40W adapter is optional and the battery statement is Apple’s own claim.
Who should wait for the Galaxy S27 Ultra?
- You specifically require an S Pen or DeX-style desktop workflow and do not want to buy the S26 Ultra.
- You prefer Android and Samsung’s software environment enough to tolerate an unknown launch schedule and price.
- Long-range photography is your top priority. Wait for Samsung to publish the S27 telephoto hardware and for independent tests to show real detail and stabilization.
- You can delay your purchase. Waiting is the only way to replace today’s unknowns with confirmed S27 information.
A practical decision process
- Set a deadline. If your current phone is failing, damaged or no longer secure, an unannounced model is not a dependable replacement plan.
- Choose your ecosystem first. Decide whether iOS continuity or Android, S Pen and DeX capability matters more than a theoretical future specification.
- Rank your camera subjects. For everyday video and a known three-lens system, the iPhone is available now. For distant subjects, wait for S27 telephoto details or buy the S26 Ultra with its documented 3x and 5x cameras.
- Compare like-for-like prices. Use official storage tiers and regional pricing once Samsung publishes them; do not compare a confirmed $1,199 iPhone launch price with a rumor.
- Recheck primary documentation before ordering. Confirm the S27 announcement, release date, battery, charging, cameras, software support and warranty for your market.
What would change this recommendation?
The recommendation could change once Samsung publishes a real S27 Ultra. The decisive evidence would be its launch price at equivalent storage, camera sensors and optical focal lengths, battery and charging specifications, display brightness and refresh behavior, processor and update policy, and independent measurements of battery life, heat and camera quality. Until then, those are questions—not advantages that can be awarded to Samsung.
