The claim that the Galaxy S27 will use “outdated cameras” is only partly supported. A June 2026 tip said the base S27 might receive no meaningful camera upgrade, but later reports pointed to a possible Sony 50MP main sensor for the S27 and S27+ and a possible 16MP autofocus selfie camera for higher-tier models. The rumored “square sensor” concerns the front camera and is not a confirmed Samsung feature.
Samsung has not published Galaxy S27 camera specifications. The phone is expected to arrive around February or March 2027, so every S27 camera detail currently belongs in the rumor category.
What the “outdated cameras” report actually says
The base-model stagnation rumor
Digital Camera World reported on June 18, 2026, that a tip attributed to Lanzuk claimed the vanilla Galaxy S27 was unlikely to receive meaningful camera or display upgrades. The explanation was limited component-development activity. That report described the claim as very early speculation, not a Samsung specification, and placed the likely launch window in February or March 2027.

This rumor mainly concerns the standard S27. It does not establish that the S27+, S27 Pro or S27 Ultra will reuse every Galaxy S26 camera.

Later reports point to at least one possible change
Android Authority reported on July 23, 2026, citing Galaxy Club sources, that the Galaxy S27 and S27+ might use a 50MP primary sensor supplied by Sony. A Sony main sensor would contradict a simple “same old camera” narrative, although the component remains unconfirmed.
A second Android Authority report on July 24 described leaked NM1–NM4 codenames and possible 50MP Sony IMX855 ultrawide hardware on upper-tier models. It also reported possible 16MP autofocus selfie cameras for those models. These are leaked internal references and reported hardware possibilities, not final retail specifications.

Does the Galaxy S27 have a square selfie sensor?
Not according to any confirmed Samsung announcement. Phandroid reported on July 3, 2026, that a rumored 16MP front camera for the S27 Pro and S27 Ultra had prompted speculation about a square sensor. The report said it was unclear whether the standard S27 and S27+ would receive the same front-camera upgrade.

“Square sensor” describes a possible shape or aspect ratio for a front-facing imaging sensor. It does not mean Samsung has confirmed a square rear camera, a new camera bump, or a particular photo mode. Until Samsung identifies the sensor and its imaging system, the square-camera description should be treated as speculation about the selfie hardware only.

The confirmed Galaxy S26 baseline
Samsung’s official Galaxy S26 comparison is the reliable reference point for judging what “unchanged” would mean. The listed cameras are:

Samsung’s detailed base-S26 specification lists a 50MP + 10MP + 12MP rear-camera system, f/1.8, f/2.4 and f/2.2 apertures, optical image stabilization, 3x optical zoom and a 12MP autofocus front camera. Those are official 2026 S26 figures, not predictions for the S27.

Why the camera leaks conflict
The reports describe different products and different stages of development. The June tip concerns limited development for the base phone, while the later Sony-sensor and selfie-camera reports concern possible component changes or upper-tier models. A new sensor supplier also does not automatically guarantee better photos: image processing, lens design, stabilization and software tuning determine the final result.

Tech Advisor reported on August 7 that Samsung’s newly announced 200MP ISOCELL HPC was unlikely to appear in the S27 range and that an HP6 module was instead rumored. Neither report establishes a final S27 camera bill of materials.

Should you buy the Galaxy S26 or wait for the S27?
Buy the Galaxy S26 when certainty matters
The Galaxy S26 is the rational choice if you need a phone before the rumored early-2027 launch. Its camera hardware is documented: the base and Plus models have 50MP wide, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP 3x telephoto cameras, while the Ultra adds a 200MP main camera, 50MP ultrawide and two telephoto cameras. Regional pricing, stock and any Amazon listing should be verified at the time of purchase.
Wait when the possible upgrades fit your priorities
Waiting makes sense if you specifically want a potential Sony main sensor, a higher-resolution autofocus selfie camera on an upper-tier model, or whatever camera changes Samsung eventually confirms. The trade-off is that the launch timing, model lineup, sensor choices and final prices remain unsettled.
There is no verified Galaxy S27 Amazon listing or final Samsung camera specification to use for a purchase comparison yet. Treat any listing or detailed specification appearing before Samsung’s announcement as provisional.
