For bright outdoor photos at practical magnifications, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the safer detail-first choice at 10x. For dramatic views beyond 30x, the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL often produces the more impressive-looking image with Pro Res Zoom, but its AI reconstruction can alter small lettering and other fine details. At 5x in daylight, the phones are close enough that neither is a universal winner. The better camera depends on your distance, lighting, and whether you value convincing detail or faithful recording.
Which phone wins at each zoom range?
The comparison here covers the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Google Pixel 10 Pro XL. It should not be read as a verdict on every previous or future Galaxy Ultra or Pixel Pro generation.
| Situation | More convincing choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 5x in bright daylight | Essentially tied | At 5x in bright daylight, the phones showed subtle differences but no consistent detail winner. |
| 10x in bright outdoor light | Galaxy S26 Ultra | At 10x in bright outdoor light, Samsung retained more texture and fine detail on signs, poles, and buildings. |
| 10x in dim indoor or low light | Usually Pixel, or roughly even | Samsung’s advantage narrowed; some low-light samples were sharper from the Pixel. |
| Beyond 30x | Pixel 10 Pro XL | Pro Res Zoom adds AI enhancement that can make distant subjects look clearer. |
| Exact lettering or evidentiary detail at extreme zoom | Galaxy’s softer rendering may be safer | Pixel’s enhancement can clean up an image while changing words or tiny shapes. |
In the side-by-side samples described here, these results are not laboratory scores or guarantees for every subject. The result can change with light, movement, atmospheric haze, focus, and the phone’s software processing.
What each phone’s zoom hardware actually provides
Galaxy S26 Ultra: two dedicated telephoto cameras
The Galaxy S26 Ultra combines a 200-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, a 10-megapixel 3x telephoto, and a 50-megapixel 5x telephoto. The separate 3x camera gives it a native intermediate perspective before the 5x lens takes over. The 5x telephoto is the important hardware reference for longer-range comparisons, while the 3x unit can be useful when a subject is too close for a natural 5x composition.

Pixel 10 Pro XL: one 5x telephoto and computational reach
Google lists a 48-megapixel 5x telephoto for the Pixel 10 Pro XL and advertises Pro Res Zoom up to 100x. That gives the Pixel the same nominal 5x optical reach described for Samsung, but its headline 100x range is not equivalent to 100x optical magnification. At such distances, the phone must crop, combine frames, sharpen edges, and, above 30x in the reviewed behavior, use AI enhancement.
Megapixel counts and maximum-zoom labels are specifications, not image-quality scores. A 100x badge does not tell you whether text is accurate, whether texture is naturally captured, or whether a picture will remain useful after cropping.
How optical, hybrid, and AI zoom differ
Optical zoom uses the lens’s physical focal length. Both phones have a 5x telephoto, so a subject framed at that native perspective starts with genuine long-lens information. Moving to 10x requires additional processing or cropping beyond the 5x lens. Moving past 30x requires much more reconstruction because the sensor has not recorded enough independent detail to support a fully optical result.
Computational processing can align multiple frames, reduce noise, restore edges, and choose detail from different cameras. That can produce a cleaner photograph than a simple crop. It can also make an image look more detailed than the captured evidence warrants. Pro Res Zoom’s extreme-range results illustrate that trade-off: apparent clarity improves, while fidelity to tiny original features can decline.
5x: the closest contest
Detail in daylight
GSMArena’s daylight samples found only subtle differences at 5x and no consistent winner for detail in most scenes. Since both phones have a 5x telephoto, this is the range where their optical hardware is most directly comparable. A distant person, building, or landscape can look excellent from either device when the subject is well lit and the phone is held steadily.

Color rendering
For people, the Samsung samples tended warmer or yellower, while the Pixel looked more neutral or slightly pink. Neither rendering is automatically more accurate for every viewer or skin tone. Choose Samsung if you like a warmer presentation; choose Pixel if you prefer a cooler, more restrained result. Color preference should not be mistaken for a decisive zoom-quality advantage.
When 5x matters most
Five times is useful for portraits from a respectful distance, stage performances, travel details, and animals that would be difficult to approach. Because the reviews found the phones broadly similar here, composition and lighting are likely to matter more than the specification sheet. If most of your photos stop at 5x, buy based on your wider camera preferences rather than expecting a major zoom difference.
10x in bright outdoor light: Samsung preserves more texture
At 10x in bright daylight, the Galaxy S26 Ultra has the clearest advantage in the reviewed comparisons. Tom’s Guide’s sign test showed Samsung retaining more surface texture, while the Pixel smoothed poles and buildings. GSMArena also reported a noticeable Samsung fine-detail advantage in bright outdoor scenes.
The distinction is not simply that one image is sharper. Samsung’s 10x files tended to preserve small variations in surfaces that the Pixel’s processing softened. This matters for brickwork, tree bark, architectural edges, and signs viewed from a distance. The advantage is most useful when you plan to crop the image later or want the scene to retain a natural sense of material.
How to use that advantage
- Use 10x for well-lit subjects such as outdoor signs, buildings, sports details, or wildlife in open daylight.
- Keep the phone steady; small hand movements are magnified at this framing.
- Expect the result to weaken as light falls, even if the scene still looks bright to your eyes.
- Inspect lettering separately from general texture if the photo is meant to document information.
10x in dim indoor and low light: the gap narrows
Lighting changes the 10x verdict. GSMArena found that Samsung’s quality dropped in dim indoor scenes and that results were mostly level. In several low-light samples, the Pixel was sharper at 10x. This does not make the Pixel a universal 10x winner; it shows that Samsung’s daylight texture advantage is conditional.

Long zoom exposures are vulnerable to hand shake, subject movement, and noise. Processing decisions also become more visible: a phone may smooth grain and fine texture to keep an image clean, or sharpen edges to make the frame appear clearer. In a dim room, the Pixel’s output can look crisper, while Samsung may lose the texture advantage seen outdoors.

If your typical 10x photos are made in museums, arenas, restaurants, or evening streets, give more weight to the low-light samples than to bright-daylight sign tests. A Pixel may be the better fit when apparent sharpness in dark scenes matters. If you mostly shoot in strong daylight and care about natural surface texture, Samsung remains the stronger match.
Beyond 30x: Pixel’s impressive but synthetic-looking reach
Tom’s Guide reported that Pro Res Zoom activates above 30x on the Pixel 10 Pro XL. In its 100x side-by-side examples, the Pixel often made distant birds, flowers, and other textures look much clearer than Samsung’s softer, painterly-looking output. For a casual viewer, those Pixel images can be more satisfying because the subject is easier to recognize.
This is the Pixel’s strongest argument: when the subject is very far away, it can produce a photograph that looks substantially more defined. A bird on a distant branch, a flower across a field, or a landmark beyond a barrier may be easier to identify in the Pixel frame than in Samsung’s softer image.
Why the apparent detail is not optical detail
Pro Res Zoom is adding computational interpretation to a severely magnified view. The resulting texture is not equivalent to texture recorded by a 100x optical lens. Treat it as an enhanced rendering: useful for an impressive view, but not proof that every fine feature was captured accurately.

Extreme zoom and text: the fidelity warning
The same comparison found failures on fine print and signage. The Pixel could make words look cleaner while rendering them incorrectly. Samsung’s softer frame sometimes preserved more accurate lettering even when it looked less sharp overall.
This creates two different definitions of “better.” If you want a pleasing picture of a faraway subject, Pixel’s reconstruction may win. If the image is evidence—such as a sign, label, serial number, or distant notice—an attractive but incorrect letter is a serious failure. At extreme magnification, do not rely on either phone as a substitute for moving closer or using an optical instrument when exact text matters.
A practical text-checking procedure
- Capture the scene at the phone’s native 5x and again at the longer magnification you need.
- Review the lettering at full image size rather than trusting the thumbnail.
- Compare repeated characters, numbers, and straight edges with the physical sign.
- If any word is important, make a second capture from a different position or distance.
- Do not transcribe a word solely because the enhanced frame appears crisp.
Image character: texture, smoothing, and color
These phones do not fail in the same way. Samsung’s bright-daylight 10x rendering tends to retain more texture, but its extreme zoom can look soft or painterly. Pixel’s Pro Res Zoom can create stronger edge definition and a more immediately impressive image, while smoothing some structures at 10x and occasionally changing fine lettering beyond 30x.
Color is another preference axis. Samsung’s people shots leaned warm or yellow; Pixel’s were more neutral or slightly pink. If you edit your images, either look can be adjusted, so color alone should not decide the purchase unless you strongly prefer one rendering before editing.

Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if:
- Your priority is detailed 10x daylight photography.
- You photograph signs, buildings, textures, or outdoor subjects where natural surface detail matters.
- You want a dedicated 3x telephoto as well as a 5x telephoto for more framing choices.
- You prefer a softer but potentially more faithful rendering of tiny lettering at extreme zoom.
Choose the Pixel 10 Pro XL if:
- You frequently photograph subjects beyond 30x and want the most convincing-looking distant view.
- You value apparent sharpness of birds, flowers, and other small subjects more than strict pixel-level fidelity.
- You often shoot at 10x indoors or in low light, where reviewed samples sometimes favored Pixel sharpness.
- You accept that Pro Res Zoom can reconstruct details and may alter fine text.
Either phone is reasonable if:
- Most of your zoom photos are taken at 5x in daylight.
- You care more about framing, color preference, and the rest of the camera system than a narrow zoom advantage.
- You do not need the 100x or extreme-zoom modes for documentation.
A decision framework for real-world shooting
| Your typical subject | Start with | Check before keeping the image |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor architecture at 8–10x | Galaxy S26 Ultra | Look for retained brick, stone, and sign texture. |
| Indoor stage or museum detail at 10x | Pixel 10 Pro XL is competitive | Check for motion blur and smoothed surfaces. |
| Birds or flowers more than 30x away | Pixel 10 Pro XL | Decide whether enhanced texture looks plausible for your purpose. |
| Distant text or numbers | Use the native 5x first on either phone | Verify every character against the real subject; do not trust AI-enhanced lettering. |
| Portraits around 5x | Either | Choose the warmer Samsung or more neutral/pink Pixel rendering you prefer. |
How to get more reliable zoom photos from either phone
Frame at the lowest useful magnification
Start at 5x and increase only when the subject is too small. The native telephoto view gives both phones their strongest long-range optical starting point. Jumping immediately to 30x or 100x increases the role of processing and makes shake more obvious.
Best Value
- 6.8" Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with 1–120 Hz adaptive refresh rate, up to ~1750 nits brightness, HDR10+ support, and ultra-smooth responsiveness for gaming and scrolling.
Stabilize before judging detail
Brace the phone against a solid surface or hold it with both hands. At 10x and beyond, a tiny movement can make a detailed camera look soft. Take more than one frame when the subject is important and compare them at full size.
Match the mode to the light
Use the daylight findings to guide expectations: Samsung’s advantage is most apparent outdoors in strong light, while dim scenes can narrow or reverse it. If the scene is dark, prioritize a sharp, repeatable frame over the highest zoom number.
Separate “looks sharp” from “is accurate”
For ordinary memories, the Pixel’s enhanced extreme-zoom result may be exactly what you want. For evidence, text, or any image that another person must inspect, compare the lettering and shapes rather than accepting a cleaner-looking file as more truthful.

Tom’s Guide’s 200-photo comparison and GSMArena’s sample scenes show how the phones behaved in those subjects and conditions, but they are not a controlled measurement of every unit, software version, distance, or lighting setup.
No independent population-wide score establishes one phone as the universal zoom champion. The published specifications confirm camera hardware and advertised capabilities; they do not settle image quality. Current pricing, stock, and regional availability are also outside this comparison, so the camera verdict should not be treated as a value ranking.
Final recommendation
Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra for dependable 10x detail in bright outdoor scenes, a dedicated 3x camera, and a stronger emphasis on preserving real texture. Buy the Pixel 10 Pro XL if your priority is an impressive-looking view at 30x and beyond, or if you often find the Pixel sharper in dim 10x scenes. At 5x, the phones are close. The deciding question is whether you want Samsung’s more texture-preserving rendering at practical range or Pixel’s more aggressive AI enhancement at extreme range—and whether altered fine text is acceptable.
