Choose 512GB for regular 8K recording, 1TB if you keep a large local media library or want several years with minimal cleanup, and 256GB only if you record 8K occasionally and will offload files routinely. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is documented in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB versions, but advertised capacity is not the same as free space. Samsung reports 223.5GB available on one regional 256GB model and warns that preloaded software reduces usable storage.

The short answer

Samsung documents three Galaxy S26 Ultra storage tiers: 256GB with 12GB of RAM, 512GB with 12GB of RAM, and 1TB with 16GB of RAM. Availability can differ by country, carrier and regional model, so confirm the listing for your market before ordering.

The phone’s rear cameras can record UHD 8K video at 7680 × 4320 resolution and 30 frames per second. That mode captures substantially more data than ordinary still photography or lower-resolution video. If 8K is part of your normal shooting routine, storage headroom matters more than the headline capacity on the box.

  • 256GB: Best for lighter local storage, occasional 8K clips and owners who regularly transfer media elsewhere.
  • 512GB: The practical middle choice for regular 8K recording, provided you schedule computer or cloud offloads.
  • 1TB: The least restrictive option for frequent 8K, a large photo library, long ownership and minimal file management.

There is no defensible answer to “How many minutes of 8K fit?” from Samsung’s published specifications alone. The cited material does not state a video bitrate, codec setting or measured minutes-per-gigabyte result. Any precise time table would therefore be an invention rather than a specification.

Documented configurations

256GB 12GB Light to moderate local media; occasional 8K Samsung reports 223.5GB available on one Indonesia-region model, not a universal figure.
512GB 12GB Regular 8K with scheduled offload Actual free space was not stated in the cited specifications and will be reduced by software.
1TB 16GB Heavy local media, frequent 8K and longer ownership Actual free space was not stated; regional availability may vary.

The figures in the first column are the manufacturer’s advertised capacities. They are not promises that the same number of gigabytes will appear as empty space when you first start the phone.

Why usable space is lower

Samsung’s published warning says: “Actual available storage capacity is subject to preloaded software.” The operating system, bundled applications and reserved system data occupy part of the internal drive before you create a photo or video. Samsung’s Indonesia product information gives a concrete example: a 256GB Galaxy S26 Ultra is listed with 223.5GB available storage. That is a regional product-page figure, so it should be treated as an illustration rather than a guaranteed result for every country or software build.

No equivalent available-space number is supplied in the cited material for the 512GB or 1TB models. Do not multiply the 223.5GB result and assume the larger phones will expose an exact proportional amount; software reservations and regional configurations can change.

What the S26 Ultra’s 8K mode records

Resolution and frame rate

Samsung’s cited specifications list rear-camera recording up to UHD 8K at 7680 × 4320 and 30fps. A single 8K frame contains 33,177,600 picture elements (7680 multiplied by 4320), and the camera records 30 such frames every second. That combination explains why 8K clips consume storage quickly even when a recording is short.

The rear-camera specification lists a 200MP main camera alongside 50MP, 50MP and 10MP cameras. Those resolution figures describe the imaging hardware; they do not establish the file size of a finished photograph or video. Processing, compression and recording settings determine the bytes written to storage.

Why resolution alone cannot produce a time estimate

Two 8K recordings with identical dimensions and frame rate can occupy different amounts of space. The decisive variable is the encoded data rate, commonly expressed as bitrate, along with codec and camera-setting choices. Samsung’s cited pages identify the 8K dimensions and 30fps rate but do not publish the bitrate, codec profile or a minutes-per-GB measurement.

For that reason, a table claiming that 256GB holds a particular number of minutes, or that 1TB holds a precise number of hours, would imply a measurement Samsung has not provided. Treat such numbers elsewhere as tests tied to a specific firmware and setting, not as an official capacity guarantee.

How much photo storage should you plan for?

Why a camera megapixel number is not a file-size promise

The 200MP, 50MP and 10MP labels identify maximum sensor resolutions for the rear cameras. They do not tell you how large each saved image will be. A processed photograph can be compressed differently depending on the selected capture mode and the scene, so there is no single “S26 Ultra photo size” that applies to every shot.

Use the camera modes you actually expect to use when planning. A person who takes occasional everyday pictures creates a very different library from someone who photographs every event at the highest available resolution and keeps every duplicate. Because Samsung does not publish average file sizes in the cited material, the safest plan is based on retention habits rather than a made-up per-photo average.

Questions to answer before choosing a tier

  • How many months or years of photos do you intend to keep on the phone?
  • Will you retain original files after sharing edited or resized copies?
  • Do you routinely shoot bursts, long documents, travel albums or event coverage?
  • Will your computer or cloud library be the archive, or must the phone remain the primary copy?
  • How often are you willing to remove completed projects and old videos?

If your answer is “the phone must hold everything,” move up a tier. If your answer is “I transfer finished albums every few weeks,” a smaller tier can work, provided that routine is realistic.

Choosing between 256GB, 512GB and 1TB

256GB: workable with active housekeeping

The 256GB model is appropriate when local storage is deliberately limited. It can suit a user who takes normal day-to-day photos, records 8K only for short occasional clips and has a dependable offload habit. Samsung’s 223.5GB available figure for one regional variant shows why the usable starting point is materially below the label.

With this tier, treat free space as a budget you monitor rather than an unlimited reserve. Transfer completed trips, family events and 8K projects to a computer or cloud destination, confirm that the copies open correctly, then remove the originals from the phone. Waiting until the storage warning appears makes a large transfer more urgent and can leave too little working room for new recordings or software updates.

512GB: the balanced choice for regular recording

512GB is the sensible compromise for people who expect to record 8K regularly but do not need a permanent, multi-year archive on the handset. It gives substantially more headroom than 256GB while avoiding the highest-capacity purchase. The extra room is useful for long trips, several active projects and a larger offline photo collection.

It is not a substitute for backup discipline. A regular 8K shooter should still set a calendar reminder to copy media to a computer or cloud service. The appropriate interval depends on how quickly you record, because Samsung does not provide a bitrate from which a universal schedule can be calculated. Check the phone’s storage screen after each major shoot and adjust the interval before free space becomes tight.

1TB: maximum local freedom

Choose 1TB when you routinely record 8K, keep a large original-quality photo library, travel without dependable internet access, or expect to keep the handset for several years. The 1TB configuration is documented with 16GB of RAM, whereas the 256GB and 512GB configurations are documented with 12GB; the storage recommendation here is based on capacity needs, not a claim that the extra RAM changes photo or video file size.

Even 1TB should not be treated as the only copy of irreplaceable memories. A lost, damaged or stolen phone can take its local library with it. Large capacity buys time between transfers; it does not replace a second copy.

A practical storage-management workflow

Before recording a major event

  1. Open the phone’s storage view and note available space, not the advertised capacity printed on the box.
  2. Review the Gallery or file browser for completed projects, duplicate exports and downloads that can be archived.
  3. Charge the phone and carry the USB Type-C cable needed for a direct transfer. Samsung’s regional specification confirms USB Type-C connectivity.
  4. Decide where the new originals will be copied: a computer, an external storage workflow that you have verified with the phone, or a cloud service with enough account capacity.
  5. Leave a safety margin rather than filling the drive to its last few gigabytes; recording and system operations need working space.

After recording

  1. Connect the phone to the destination using a data-capable USB Type-C cable.
  2. On the phone’s USB notification, choose the file-transfer option if one is offered. The exact wording can vary with software version and region.
  3. Copy the camera folder and any other folder in which you saved edited exports. Keep the original folder structure until verification is complete.
  4. Open representative photos and play several videos from the destination. Check that file counts and dates are plausible.
  5. Make a second copy for important material before deleting anything from the phone.
  6. Delete only confirmed copies, then empty the phone’s trash or recycle area if you need the space immediately.

When cloud backup is the better fit

Cloud storage is convenient when you use multiple devices or cannot connect to a computer often. It is still constrained by upload time, account capacity and network availability. Enable automatic backup before a trip, verify that originals have finished uploading, and test access to a few files from another device. A cloud icon or queued status is not the same as a completed, recoverable copy.

How to answer “How many minutes of 8K fit?” responsibly

The honest answer from Samsung’s cited specifications is that the exact number is not established. A capacity calculation requires at least the encoded bitrate and a definition of how much of the advertised drive is available for camera files. Neither is supplied as a universal figure.

You can obtain a personal estimate without pretending it is an official specification:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record a representative 8K clip using the settings you actually plan to use.
  2. Transfer the clip to a computer and read its file size and duration.
  3. Divide file size by duration to obtain an observed average rate for that clip and setting.
  4. Repeat with more than one scene if reliability matters; motion and camera processing can change the result.
  5. Apply that measured rate only to the same phone, firmware and settings. Keep a margin for system data, photos and future software.

This method produces a user-specific planning number, not a promise for every S26 Ultra. A manufacturer bitrate specification or reproducible test under stated settings would be needed for a general minutes-per-gigabyte table.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Confusing advertised and available capacity

Buying “256GB” does not mean 256GB is empty on first boot. Use the available-space figure shown on your own phone. Samsung’s 223.5GB Indonesia listing demonstrates the scale of the difference, while its warning makes clear that preloaded software is the reason capacity varies.

Using a random minutes-per-GB chart

Charts copied from another phone, codec, firmware or frame rate may not apply to the S26 Ultra. Without a Samsung-published bitrate, label any number you measure yourself with the exact settings and conditions.

Assuming a larger tier removes the need for backup

More space delays the next transfer; it does not protect against hardware loss or corruption. Keep at least one verified copy away from the phone for irreplaceable files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Filling the phone until recording stops

A nearly full drive creates an avoidable emergency during a trip or event. Offload earlier, retain a working-space buffer and check storage before starting a long 8K session.

Ignoring regional listings

Samsung states that storage availability can vary by carrier, country or region. Confirm both the capacity/RAM combination and the available-space information for the exact market and model number you intend to purchase.

Buying decision by recording habit

Your habit Recommended tier Why Non-negotiable practice
Mostly everyday photos; 8K only occasionally 256GB Lowest documented capacity can work when the local library stays curated. Offload completed clips and albums frequently.
Regular 8K for travel, projects or family events 512GB Provides a useful buffer without requiring the highest tier. Schedule computer or cloud transfers before free space becomes scarce.
Frequent 8K plus a large original photo archive 1TB Maximizes local headroom and reduces cleanup interruptions. Maintain a second copy despite the larger drive.
Uncertain habits or multi-year ownership 512GB or 1TB Future recording habits are difficult to predict, and capacity cannot be added later through the documented internal tiers. Verify local pricing and availability before checkout.

Bottom line for each buyer

Buy 256GB only when you are comfortable treating the phone as an active workspace and regularly moving media elsewhere. Its documented 223.5GB available figure on one regional model makes the headroom limitation concrete.

Buy 512GB if 8K is a regular feature but you will maintain a predictable offload routine. It is the best balance for most serious camera users who do not need their entire archive on the handset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy 1TB if you want the fewest storage decisions, keep years of photos locally, record 8K often or travel where transfers are inconvenient. It is the least restrictive choice, while still requiring backup for valuable files.
