Verdict: The Galaxy S26 Ultra is worth buying for photography-focused users who want long-range zoom, improved low-light images, a large 120Hz screen, an integrated S Pen and hardware privacy features. It is not an automatic winner: macro detail and color naturalness can trail the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and battery endurance is good rather than class-leading. At a $1,299 US starting price for 256GB, its premium makes the most sense if you will use those distinctive strengths.

Release date, configurations and US pricing

Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series in February 2026. Android Central reports that the S26 Ultra went on sale in the United States on March 11, 2026. Reported US launch configurations are:

Configuration Launch price RAM
256GB $1,299 12GB
512GB $1,499 12GB
1TB $1,799 16GB

These are reported US prices, and Samsung promotions or retailer pricing can change. Check the current price and storage availability before ordering. The 512GB model costs $200 more than the base version, while the 1TB model adds $500, so heavier video shooters should decide whether the extra capacity is worth that substantial jump.

The large camera island protrudes from the back and affects the phone’s balance on a table or in one hand. That is a practical trade-off for the camera hardware, not merely a cosmetic detail.

How good are the S26 Ultra cameras?

Low light and everyday shooting

Tom’s Guide found the S26 Ultra’s low-light output better than the S25 Ultra’s in its comparison. Samsung says the wider apertures deliver 47% brighter main-camera images and 37% brighter telephoto images; those percentages are Samsung’s claims rather than independent measurements. In practical terms, the phone is particularly well suited to night scenes, indoor subjects and distant scenes where a conventional phone camera would need aggressive digital enlargement.

The 200MP main camera and 50MP ultrawide provide flexibility for landscapes, architecture and groups, while the dedicated 3x and 5x telephotos cover common portrait and event distances without relying entirely on crop zoom.

Zoom performance

Zoom is the S26 Ultra’s clearest photographic advantage. Tom’s Guide found its long-range images clearer than the S25 Ultra’s and judged it ahead of the iPhone 17 Pro Max for zoom. The 3x lens is useful for portraits and medium-distance subjects; the 5x lens gives wildlife, travel and stage photography more reach before computational zoom takes over.

Macro, color and selfies

The camera system is not best in every situation. Tom’s Guide preferred the iPhone 17 Pro Max for macro detail and for a brighter flower rendering in one comparison. It also found the Samsung could oversaturate peppers, so users seeking strictly natural color may prefer the iPhone’s rendering in some scenes. The selfie camera captured sharp detail but could blow out a face in strong sun.

Digital Camera World rated the phone 9/10 overall and 8/10 for its camera, describing it as excellent but not the best camera phone. That is the fairest summary: the S26 Ultra is a strong all-rounder with unusually capable zoom and improved night shooting, not a universal winner for macro, color science or every portrait.

Video stabilization and Horizon Lock

Horizon Lock, built on Samsung’s Super Steady mode, keeps the horizon level even when the phone is rotated or tilted while recording. Tom’s Guide called it “insanely stable.” It is most useful for walking, cycling, action clips and other situations where keeping a conventional phone level is difficult. The feature can require cropping or other processing to maintain the locked horizon, so it is a stabilization tool rather than a replacement for a gimbal in every production.

Does Privacy Display make the screen dimmer?

Samsung calls Privacy Display the world’s first built-in privacy display for a mobile phone. It controls narrow- and wide-view pixel types in an alternating pattern, making content harder for people beside you to read while preserving a clear view for the person directly in front.

There is a viewing-angle trade-off. Tom’s Guide found the S25 Ultra’s screen brighter head-on and especially brighter off-angle, but considered the S26 Ultra’s privacy benefit worthwhile. The same review found images sharper through the improved ProScaler processing. Privacy Display is therefore most valuable on trains, planes, in cafés and at work; buyers who prioritize maximum off-axis brightness may prefer a conventional panel.

Battery life and charging

The S26 Ultra retains a 5,000mAh battery. Samsung claims up to 31 hours of video playback, while Digital Camera World describes a full day of moderate use. Android Central’s battery-drain test recorded 16 hours and 10 minutes before the phone shut down, but its reviewer said real-world use only barely reached the end of a day. Those results indicate solid endurance, not a class-leading battery phone, especially with heavy camera, gaming, navigation or mobile-data use.

Super Fast Charging 3.0 can reach 75% in about 30 minutes according to Digital Camera World. The phone supports USB Power Delivery and Programmable Power Supply (USB PD/PPS), so buyers who want the fastest charging should budget for a compatible charger. Charging speed depends on the charger, cable, temperature and battery level; the 75% figure is an approximate review observation, not a guarantee for every setup.

Low-light improvement over the previous generation Galaxy S26 Ultra Tom’s Guide found better night output than the S25 Ultra.
Macro detail iPhone 17 Pro Max Preferred detail in Tom’s Guide’s close-up comparison.

Selfies in harsh sunlight Neither is flawless The Samsung produced sharp detail but could blow out a face.

This is a comparison of the cited camera observations, not a claim that every scene will favor one phone. Display privacy, the S Pen and Samsung’s Android software are separate reasons to choose the S26 Ultra.

Should you buy it instead of a foldable phone?

Buy the S26 Ultra when your priorities are camera reach, low-light shooting, battery that can last most of a day, a large conventional display, an S Pen and a privacy mode for public use. Choose a foldable when one-handed portability, a compact folded shape or a tablet-like inner screen matters more than the Ultra’s camera system and rigid slab design.

No controlled comparison with a current foldable camera was established here, so there is no evidence-based universal verdict that the S26 Ultra beats every foldable. Treat this as a priority decision: the Ultra offers a known 200MP/50MP/3x/5x camera package, while a foldable’s camera quality depends heavily on the specific model and its compromises in thickness, weight, durability and battery.

Who should buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra?

  • Photography-first buyers: You regularly use zoom, shoot in low light or want flexible focal lengths without carrying a dedicated camera.
  • Video creators: Horizon Lock is useful for moving footage that needs a level horizon.
  • Public-space users: Privacy Display can reduce shoulder-surfing on commutes and in shared workplaces.
  • S Pen users: The stylus is integrated rather than an accessory you must carry separately.
  • Storage-heavy users: The 512GB and 1TB options accommodate large photo and video libraries, although their prices rise sharply.

Who should skip it?

  • Macro specialists: The iPhone 17 Pro Max may deliver finer close-up detail in the tested comparison.
  • Natural-color purists: Samsung processing can look oversaturated in some scenes.
  • Maximum-endurance buyers: Independent testing found borderline full-day use for one reviewer.
  • Foldable enthusiasts: The S26 Ultra is a conventional large phone, not a pocket-to-tablet transformation.
  • Value-focused buyers: The $1,299 base price and large storage premiums make it expensive if you will not use the zoom, S Pen or privacy hardware.

Bottom line

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a camera-first flagship rather than an across-the-board photographic champion. Its combination of improved low-light performance, strong 3x/5x zoom, Horizon Lock, a 6.9-inch 120Hz display, S Pen support and Privacy Display is unusually complete. The compromises are equally clear: macro and color rendering can trail the iPhone 17 Pro Max, battery life is merely solid, and the larger storage tiers are costly. For photographers who value reach and a traditional flagship design more than a foldable screen, it is one of the most compelling 2026 choices.
