Short answer: The Galaxy S26 Ultra reaches 100x only through digital zoom. Its native optical telephoto positions are 3x and 5x; 2x and 10x are computational “optical-quality” settings produced with Adaptive Pixel processing. It can capture RAW through the separate Expert RAW camera route, with Samsung product material identifying 50MP RAW capture. The camera does not always save 24MP images: Samsung Support says 24MP applies only in specific zoom and shooting conditions, while many modes revert to 12MP. Smart Switch is useful for moving photos to another Galaxy phone, but a real backup plan should also preserve original RAW files on a computer or external drive.

How far can the Galaxy S26 Ultra zoom?

Samsung’s 2026 camera specifications list a maximum of 100x digital zoom. That number is not a 100x optical lens. Native optical magnification is available at 3x and 5x, using separate telephoto cameras. The camera also offers 2x and 10x positions described by Samsung as optical-quality zoom enabled by the Adaptive Pixel sensor. Those computational positions can produce useful detail, but they should not be described as equivalent to a lens that is optically 2x or 10x.

Zoom position How it is produced What to expect
0.6x Ultrawide camera Widest field of view; 24MP output is available only when other conditions permit it.
2x Adaptive Pixel optical-quality processing Computational crop and sensor processing, not a native 2x telephoto lens.
3x Native optical telephoto Dedicated 10MP telephoto camera.
5x Native optical telephoto Dedicated 50MP telephoto camera.
10x Adaptive Pixel optical-quality processing Computational optical-quality setting, not native 10x optics.
100x Digital zoom Samsung’s headline maximum; image detail depends heavily on light, steadiness and subject distance.

The most accurate one-sentence answer is: The S26 Ultra tops out at 100x digital zoom, with native optical telephoto positions at 3x and 5x and computational optical-quality positions at 2x and 10x.

What is useful in practice?

Use 3x or 5x when you want the cleanest telephoto detail without relying on a large digital crop. The 2x and 10x buttons are convenient intermediate choices, but their results depend on Adaptive Pixel processing and should be judged as computational zoom. At 100x, treat the view as a framing aid or a way to record a distant subject when no closer option exists, rather than as a substitute for a long optical lens.

Samsung says the wider apertures on the S26 Ultra allow more light to reach the sensor for clearer, more detailed low-light photos, including when zoomed. Samsung’s launch material claims 47% more light on the 200MP wide camera and 37% more on the 50MP telephoto compared with the Galaxy S25 Ultra; those are Samsung’s own generational comparison figures, not an independent test.

What cameras and specifications does it use?

Camera Resolution Optical role Aperture stated by Samsung
Wide 200MP Main camera; supports the standard view and high-resolution capture f/1.4
Ultrawide 50MP 0.6x view Not stated in the supplied specifications
Telephoto 10MP 3x optical zoom Not stated in the supplied specifications
Telephoto 50MP 5x optical zoom f/2.9

Samsung also lists optical image stabilization (OIS). OIS helps counter small hand movements during still photography and video, but it cannot freeze a moving subject; shutter speed and available light still matter.

Can the Galaxy S26 Ultra shoot RAW?

Yes. The RAW-oriented route is Expert RAW, a separate camera mode/app rather than the ordinary Photo mode. Samsung-linked product material identifies 50MP RAW photos for the S26 Ultra. RAW files retain substantially more editing information than a finished JPEG or HEIF, so they are useful when you expect to adjust exposure, white balance, highlights or shadows later.

How to capture a RAW original

  1. Install or update Expert RAW from the Galaxy Store, then open it. Samsung’s app features can change, so check the current release before relying on a particular lens, zoom position or resolution.
  2. Choose the available RAW capture setting and select the desired camera or lens. Do not assume every camera, zoom button or special mode is offered in RAW; availability is software-dependent.
  3. Set focus and exposure deliberately. RAW gives you editing latitude, but it does not repair missed focus or severe motion blur.
  4. Capture the image and confirm that the RAW file appears alongside any preview or processed copy in the camera’s storage location.
  5. Import the original RAW files into an editor that supports the format, keep the originals untouched, and export smaller JPEG or HEIF copies for sharing.

RAW trade-offs

  • RAW files are larger than finished photos, so they consume storage faster and take longer to copy.
  • They require an editing workflow; a RAW file may look flatter or less finished before processing.
  • Expert RAW is software maintained. Lens coverage, zoom limits, supported modes and output resolution can change with a Galaxy Store update.
  • Back up the original files before deleting them from the phone. An edited export is not a replacement for the camera original.

Why are photos saved at 12MP instead of 24MP?

On the S26 Ultra, 24MP output is conditional rather than universal. Samsung Support says the phone uses 24MP at 0.6x–1.9x and 5x–9.9x when the required quality setting is active. Outside those zoom ranges, the camera defaults to 12MP.

Condition Expected output
0.6x through 1.9x, with Photo Enhancer set to Prioritize quality 24MP, subject to the exceptions below
5x through 9.9x, with Photo Enhancer set to Prioritize quality 24MP, subject to the exceptions below
Other zoom positions 12MP default

Situations that can force 12MP

  • Close-up shots
  • Continuous shooting from the third shot within one second
  • Burst shooting
  • Flash photography
  • Night mode
  • Document scanning
  • Abnormally high or low operating temperature
  • Photo Enhancer set to “Balanced” or “Prioritize speed”

How to keep 24MP when it is supported

  1. Open the Camera settings and find the Photo Enhancer quality option.
  2. Select Prioritize quality; “Balanced” and “Prioritize speed” can produce 12MP files.
  3. Use a zoom position inside the supported 0.6x–1.9x or 5x–9.9x ranges.
  4. Turn off flash, Night mode, burst or continuous capture when those modes are not essential.
  5. Avoid close-up and document-scan modes if the 24MP result is important, and let the phone return to a normal operating temperature.
  6. Check the saved file’s pixel dimensions in Gallery or your file manager. The selected setting is not proof that every shot will be 24MP; the shooting conditions decide the final output.

A 12MP file is therefore not automatically a fault. It can be the expected result of the zoom position or an automatic mode that prioritizes speed, heat management or specialized processing.

What is the best way to back up S26 Ultra photos and RAW files?

Use two different ideas: migration when changing phones and backup when protecting originals. Samsung documents Smart Switch for transferring contacts, photos, music, videos, messages, notes and calendars to a new Galaxy device. That makes it a device-transfer tool, not proof of a complete, independently restorable cloud archive.

Moving to another Galaxy phone with Smart Switch

  1. Install or open Smart Switch on both phones and connect them using the on-screen wireless or cable option.
  2. On the new phone, choose to receive data; on the old phone, choose to send it.
  3. Select photos and videos, then review the estimated transfer size before starting.
  4. Keep both phones powered and connected until Smart Switch reports completion.
  5. Open Gallery and a file manager on the new phone. Check recent photos, older folders and several RAW files before wiping the old device.

The exact items transferred can depend on the selected categories and the current Smart Switch version. Verify the files you care about instead of assuming that a completed transfer means every folder and RAW original was restored.

A durable backup workflow for originals

  1. Connect the S26 Ultra to a computer or use a compatible external-storage workflow.
  2. Copy the camera folders, including RAW originals, rather than only exported or edited images.
  3. Organize copies by date or project without changing the original files.
  4. Open a sample of full-resolution photos and RAW files from the copy, and compare file counts with the phone.
  5. Keep a second copy on a separate physical drive or another independently managed storage location. This is general file-preservation advice, not a Samsung guarantee about any provider.
  6. After confirming both copies, enable automatic photo syncing only if its storage limits, RAW handling, deletion rules, version history and restore process meet your needs.

No current provider quota, RAW-retention policy or restore test is established here. Check those terms directly before treating a cloud service as your only copy. A backup is successful only when you can retrieve an original file, not merely when an upload indicator says it finished.

Video capabilities and stabilization

Samsung lists 4K at 120 frames per second in Pro Video and 8K at 30 frames per second. OIS is included in the product specifications. The frame-rate and resolution choices affect storage use, heat and editing compatibility, so select 4K/120 when slow-motion flexibility matters and 8K/30 when you need the highest listed capture resolution and have a workflow that can handle the larger files.

How to compare the S26 Ultra with another camera phone

Do not compare only the largest zoom number or megapixel headline. Use the same questions for both phones:

Comparison axis What to verify on the S26 Ultra Why it matters
Native optical reach 3x and 5x Shows where a real telephoto lens is doing the magnification.
Computational zoom 2x and 10x optical-quality positions Separates Adaptive Pixel processing from native optics.
Maximum zoom 100x digital A maximum digital figure is not directly comparable to optical reach.
RAW Expert RAW; Samsung material identifies 50MP RAW capture Check supported lenses, modes and the current app release.
Resolution behavior 24MP only in stated zoom ranges and conditions; otherwise often 12MP Explains why a selected resolution may not be the saved resolution.
Low-light hardware 200MP wide at f/1.4; 50MP 5x telephoto at f/2.9 Aperture and sensor design influence low-light results.
Stabilization Optical image stabilization listed Useful for hand movement, but not a cure for subject motion.
Video 4K/120fps Pro Video and 8K/30fps Highlights frame-rate and resolution options for different workflows.
Backup and restore Smart Switch for migration; separate original-file backup recommended Transfer convenience is different from tested, long-term recoverability.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  • 100x looks soft: move closer, use 3x or 5x, stabilize the phone and improve the light; 100x is digital zoom.
  • No RAW option appears: open or update Expert RAW and check the current supported lens and mode list.
  • A 24MP setting still saves 12MP: check zoom range, Photo Enhancer quality, flash, Night mode, burst, close-up and temperature.
  • Transferred photos seem incomplete: inspect folders and RAW files on the destination before erasing the source phone.
  • Storage fills quickly: RAW, 8K video and 4K/120fps footage are large; copy originals to verified storage and remove only files with a confirmed second copy.
