Start by checking for software and security updates, then set the display and navigation to suit how you use your Galaxy S26. Review privacy and security controls next; adjust battery and camera options only when their tradeoffs fit your needs. Some features and menu paths vary by model, region, carrier, and installed software version.
1. Install available software and security updates
Begin with the update screens on your own phone, since updates can change features and move settings. On the Galaxy S26 family, check Settings > Software update for system updates. The user guide also documents access to security update information through Settings; labels and placement can vary, so use Settings search for “security update” if you do not see it.
Install updates offered for your device before following older menu instructions. Samsung’s update notice for model SM-S942W describes changes to quick-panel, security, privacy, and other One UI behavior, but that notice does not establish that the same changes have reached every S26. Check your model code and software version in Settings > About phone > Software information, then use the menus actually shown on your phone. Samsung’s software-update instructions explain the update process; availability and timing depend on the device and rollout.

These are preference choices, not universal fixes. The Galaxy S26 family guide documents the controls below, but exact labels may differ with model or software version.
#1 Best Overall
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist¹ with Galaxy AI.² Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more³
- FAST. POWERFUL. AI-READY: Power through your day with AI-accelerated performance from our fastest, smoothest and most powerful Galaxy processor yet, built to keep up with everything you do
- IMMENSELY IMMERSIVE: No matter where you are or what you’re watching, your favorite videos and more come to life with the vibrant display on Galaxy S26
- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
Brightness, dark mode, and screen timeout
- Brightness: Adjust it for readable text and comfortable viewing. Adaptive brightness can respond to ambient light; leave it on if that behavior suits you, or adjust brightness manually if you prefer direct control.
- Dark mode: Choose the appearance you like, and schedule it if you want the interface to change at particular times. Do not assume dark mode will produce a particular battery-life improvement.
- Screen timeout: Set how long the display stays on when you are not interacting with it. A shorter interval can reduce the time an unattended screen remains visible; a longer interval may be more convenient while reading.
Motion smoothness and resolution
Look under Settings > Display for Motion smoothness and screen resolution. Motion smoothness is a choice between a display feel you may find more fluid and your own display or battery priorities. Resolution affects image detail and appearance; pick the level that works for your use rather than assuming one choice is best for everyone. The available options can vary by model.
Eye comfort and wake gestures
Eye comfort shield can adjust the display’s color temperature, and the guide documents scheduling it. Try it if a warmer screen is more comfortable for you, especially at your chosen times. The guide also documents gestures such as lift to wake and double-tap screen controls. Enable only the gestures you expect to use; they change how you interact with the phone, not its core capability.

Privacy Display on the Galaxy S26 Ultra only
Privacy Display is exclusive to the S26 Ultra; it is not a setting on the S26 or S26+. Its documented path is Settings > Display > Privacy display. Samsung describes it as “a display-integrated layer designed to limit side viewing while maintaining clarity and brightness.” You can configure when it activates and set maximum privacy protection. Try it in the situations where you want to limit side-angle viewing and decide whether the altered viewing experience works for you. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 announcement describes the feature; menus and options remain subject to the software on your device.

3. Review privacy, security, and AI controls
Open Settings > Security and privacy and review the controls available on your phone. Samsung lists Auto Blocker, Theft Protection, Private Sharing, and Secure Wi-Fi among its security and privacy tools. Consider what each feature does for your use before enabling or changing it; no single toggle should be treated as complete protection.

- App permissions: Review which apps can access sensitive information and device features, such as location, camera, or microphone. Remove access an app does not need for a purpose you recognize.
- AI and personalization: Samsung says the Personal Data Engine learns preferences on device. Inspect the related preferences and decide whether the personalization and data access fit your comfort level.
- Data protection: Samsung describes Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection as isolating data within individual apps, and Knox Vault as protecting credentials and biometrics in a hardware environment. These are Samsung’s descriptions of its protections, not a guarantee against every risk.
- Location and permission alerts: Samsung’s SM-S942W update notice describes location-access indicators and AI alerts about unnecessary permission access. You may see these depending on your model and software rollout; check the controls shown on your own phone.
Samsung’s descriptions of its Galaxy S26 security and privacy features provide product context. Use the phone’s own Security and privacy screen to confirm what is available and how it is currently configured.
4. Check battery settings without chasing unproven gains
Use the battery and charging controls to understand the phone’s status and choose behavior that suits you. The S26 family guide and Samsung support cover battery controls, battery status, and charging help, including Battery protection. Review the available Battery protection options if you want to manage how the phone charges; the right choice depends on your habits and the options displayed on your model.

The available material does not establish a reliable, quantified battery-life gain from a particular setting. Avoid disabling broad system features simply because a generic checklist calls them battery drains. If you are investigating a problem, check battery status and your phone’s own usage information before changing multiple settings at once. Samsung Australia’s Galaxy S26 support page links to model-family help on battery, charging, and other topics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Open the Camera app and start with the type of content you capture: everyday photos, low-light scenes, video, or documents. Samsung provides dedicated Galaxy S26 camera-setting help, but camera controls can differ across the S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra, and may change with software updates.

For video
Samsung Business Insights says the Galaxy S26 series can record video at up to 8K. That is a capability, not a default recommendation: higher-resolution files can demand more storage and may be less convenient to share or edit in some workflows. Choose a resolution that matches where you will store, edit, and watch the footage. Samsung Business Insights describes the series’ camera capabilities.
For photos, low light, and editing
Samsung highlights Nightography and AI editing features for the S26 family. Use night-focused options when the scene calls for them, and review edited images before sharing if you want to control the final result. If you photograph documents, prioritize a readable, well-framed capture over a resolution setting you do not need. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 product information describes camera and editing features; consult the menus on your model for the controls available to you.
