The Samsung Galaxy S25 is a compact 2025 flagship with a major processor-generation jump, a useful but fallible set of AI tools, and a camera system that is largely unchanged from the S24. It may suit buyers who want a relatively small, fast Android phone with Samsung’s stated seven-year update commitment; it is a less compelling upgrade for S24 owners or anyone who prioritizes long-range zoom. It cannot be called the top Android phone for most people in October 2026 without a current comparison against newer phones and prices.
What the Galaxy S25 offers
Samsung’s US specification sheet lists the base Galaxy S25 with a 6.2-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display (2340 × 1080), adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz, Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, 12 GB of memory, and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. Samsung lists Android 15 and One UI 7.0 at launch. Storage and color availability can differ by market and sales channel. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 specifications provide the official configuration details.
The phone’s clearest hardware change is its processor. Samsung said the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy improves NPU performance by 40%, CPU performance by 37%, and GPU performance by 30% compared with the previous generation, and described a vapor chamber 40% larger than before. These are Samsung’s comparison claims, not independent measurements. They indicate the direction of the upgrade, but do not guarantee a particular speed or battery result in every app.

For someone moving from an older phone, the S25 combines a newer processor with a small-screen flagship design and Samsung’s stated long support period. For S24 owners, the case is weaker: the rear-camera lineup is unchanged, and the overall experience may not justify replacing a recent phone unless higher performance or the newer AI features matter to you.

Tom’s Guide found substantial performance and battery improvements over the S24 in its testing, but its reviewer said the S25 was not worth upgrading to from the S24, and perhaps not from the S23 unless the buyer particularly wanted Samsung’s top performance and AI experience. That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a rule for every owner. The practical decision depends on whether your current phone is limiting you, and whether the S25’s smaller form and feature set address that limitation.
How good are the Galaxy S25 cameras?
The base S25 has three rear cameras: a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilization, a 12 MP ultrawide, and a 10 MP telephoto with optical image stabilization and 3x optical zoom. The Guardian described the camera system as generally good and noted that the hardware combination is the same as on the S24. Its main compromise is zoom reach: some competing phones offer 5x telephoto cameras, which can frame distant subjects more tightly without relying on digital zoom.

That makes the camera choice a question of priorities. The S25 provides a dedicated telephoto camera and a flexible three-camera setup in a compact phone, but it is not the obvious choice if you frequently photograph distant subjects and want longer optical reach.
What can Galaxy AI do, and how reliable is it?
Samsung introduced several AI features for the S25 series. Gemini can handle multimodal interactions across text, speech, images, and video, and Samsung says it can interact with Samsung and Google apps. Circle to Search gained contextual actions. Other named features include Writing Assist, Drawing Assist, Now Brief, Now Bar, and Call Transcript. Taken together, these tools are intended to make searches, writing, summaries, and cross-app tasks more convenient.

AI availability depends on country or region, software version, device model, carrier, language, account, and network connection. Some functions require a Samsung Account or an internet connection, and Gemini’s language and extension capabilities vary. Samsung’s original notice said Galaxy AI features would be free through the end of 2025 on supported devices; that period has passed, so that notice does not establish current pricing or terms. Check Samsung’s current terms for your region before relying on a particular feature or assuming it remains free. These features should be treated as a convenience layer, not an authoritative agent. The Guardian found Gemini could perform cross-app tasks but also make simple mistakes and confidently present false information. Check factual outputs, and do not rely on them without verification for consequential decisions.

How long will the Galaxy S25 get updates?
Samsung states that the Galaxy S25 is eligible for seven years of operating-system and security updates. This is the manufacturer’s stated support commitment; it is not a claim that every update arrives simultaneously in every region or through every carrier. Samsung’s specification sheet lists the commitment alongside the launch software details.

How long does the battery last?
Samsung lists a typical battery capacity of 4,000 mAh. In Tom’s Guide’s 2025 battery rundown, which continuously browsed the web over cellular from a full charge until empty, the S25 lasted 15 hours and 43 minutes—more than two hours longer than the S24 in that test. That is one publication’s controlled result, not a prediction for mixed daily use; screen brightness, signal strength, apps, and usage can change endurance.

Should you buy the Galaxy S25 in 2026?
Consider it if you want a relatively small Android flagship, prioritize high performance, and are satisfied with a 3x telephoto camera. Samsung’s seven-year update commitment is also a concrete strength for buyers who intend to keep a phone for years. Be more cautious if you own an S24, need longer optical zoom, or are choosing among current flagships primarily by value.
