The Galaxy S23 and iPhone 17 differ most in operating system, zoom-camera design, storage options and SIM support. Samsung’s 2023 Galaxy S23 is a compact Android phone with a dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera; Apple’s 2025 iPhone 17 has a larger display, starts at 256GB and uses eSIM only in the configuration listed by Apple. Neither phone is automatically the better value: a fair price comparison needs the same country, storage, condition and carrier-lock status.
Galaxy S23 vs iPhone 17: key specifications
The figures below come from manufacturer specifications, not hands-on testing. Samsung’s storage and SIM details cited here are from a U.S. carrier specification sheet, so check the exact regional model before buying.

Which phone has the better display?
The iPhone 17’s listed display is 0.2 inches larger diagonally: 6.3 inches versus the S23’s 6.1 inches. Both specifications describe adaptive refresh rates reaching 120Hz. The display technologies and measurement conventions differ, so the numbers alone do not establish which screen looks better in everyday use.
How do the cameras differ?
Galaxy S23: a separate 3x telephoto camera
The S23 has three rear cameras, including a dedicated telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. That gives it a distinct hardware option for framing distant subjects without relying only on the main camera’s crop.
#1 Best Overall
- 360° Rotating & 120° Folding Ring Stand: This Samsung S23 phone case comes with a built-in ring stand that rotates 360° and folds flat when not in use. Perfect for hands-free viewing, video calls, or a more secure one-hand grip. It also works with magnetic car mounts
- Camera Slide Cover: The smooth slide cover adds privacy and protects lenses from scratches, dust, and daily bumps, keeping the camera safe for your Samsung Galaxy S23 cases
- Shockproof Drop Protection: Hard PC back and soft TPU inner layer with corner airbags absorb shocks and protect against drops. Raised 1.2mm screen and 1.5mm camera edges add extra defense. All-around protection, making Samsung S23 phone case safer for daily use
- Magnetic Accessory Friendly: Hidden passive metal plates let magnetic wallets and magnetic car mounts latch on securely, giving your Galaxy S23 case stable, shake-free magnetic support (Wireless charging is not recommended)
- Designed for Samsung Galaxy S23 6.1": Perfectly fits the Galaxy S23 with precise cutouts and comfortable grip. Fully supports the ring stand, camera slide cover, and built-in metal plates for magnetic accessories
iPhone 17: two rear cameras and 2x optical-quality framing
The iPhone 17 has two rear cameras. Apple lists a 48MP main camera that enables 2x optical-quality telephoto framing, alongside a 48MP ultrawide camera.
These are differences in camera layout and stated zoom capability, not evidence that one phone takes better photographs overall. Megapixel counts and camera numbers do not substitute for comparable photo testing.
Rank #2

- Multi-layer defense: solid inner shell and soft outer cover (No Built in Screen Protector)
- OtterArmor Defense protects your OtterBox case from many common bacteria

What is the price difference?
There is no single reliable global price gap to quote without selecting a market and matching the phones by storage, condition, seller, carrier-lock status and promotion. The specifications cited here do not establish a current matched retail-price pair, and an original launch price would not tell you today’s street price.
For a useful comparison, check current listings in your country and compare like with like: new against new or refurbished against refurbished, and the same storage capacity wherever possible. The cited U.S. carrier sheet lists the S23 at 128GB or 256GB, while Apple lists the iPhone 17 at 256GB or 512GB. A 128GB S23 may cost less partly because it offers less storage; it is not a direct capacity match for the iPhone 17’s listed entry configuration.
Rank #3

Which phone should you choose?
- Choose based on your preferred platform first. The S23 runs Android and the iPhone 17 runs iOS. Consider the apps, services and devices you already rely on; specifications alone do not determine which ecosystem fits you.
- Consider the S23 if a dedicated 3x optical telephoto camera matters to you. Its rear-camera system includes a separate 10MP telephoto camera.
- Consider the iPhone 17 if you want Apple’s iOS platform or need a listed storage option above 256GB. Apple lists 256GB and 512GB configurations.
- Check SIM compatibility before ordering. The cited iPhone 17 configuration has no physical SIM support, while the cited S23 sheet lists Nano-SIM and eSIM. Confirm your carrier supports the exact regional model and eSIM setup you intend to use.
- Check exact weight and SKU in your market. Samsung’s materials give different weight figures by source and region: 5.93 oz in launch material and 168g on its Mexico page. Apple lists 177g for iPhone 17.
Battery and water-resistance claims: what the specs do not prove
Samsung lists a typical 3,900mAh battery capacity and cautions that actual battery life varies with network environment, usage patterns and other factors. Apple’s cited iPhone 17 specifications do not provide an equivalent mAh figure. Battery capacity alone cannot establish which phone lasts longer; that requires comparable runtime testing under the same conditions.
Both manufacturers list IP68 water resistance, but those ratings are tied to defined test conditions, not a promise that a phone is damage-proof. Apple specifies a maximum depth of 6m for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529. Treat water resistance as a limited specification, not permission to expose either phone to water without risk.
