On a Samsung Galaxy S23, “downloading music” can mean copying audio files you already own onto the phone or saving tracks for offline playback inside a streaming app. Local files can be opened in a compatible music player; streaming downloads remain inside the service app and follow that service’s account and offline rules.

Choose the right way to get music onto your S23

What you want Transfer local files Download in a streaming app
Starting point Compatible audio files stored on a computer Music available through the service you use
How it gets to the phone USB cable and file transfer The service app’s download control
Where it plays A local-file player such as Samsung Music The same service app’s offline player
Main limitation File-format and DRM compatibility Service-specific account, device, and retention rules
Physical accessory A compatible USB-C data cable, if you do not already have one None required for downloading

Transfer music files from a computer

Samsung’s file-transfer instructions cover Windows PCs, Macs, and Chromebooks. The computer’s interface or required software can change, so use the current prompts on your devices if their labels differ from the steps below. Samsung’s transfer guide also notes that purchased music protected by DRM may not be compatible with a Galaxy device.

Windows

  1. Connect the Galaxy S23 to the computer with a USB data cable.
  2. On the phone, open the USB notification and choose the file-transfer option.
  3. On the computer, open File Explorer, find the phone, and copy the music files into a folder on the device. Samsung also describes dragging and dropping files in Windows Explorer.

Chromebook

  1. Connect the phone to the Chromebook with a USB cable.
  2. Open the Files app and select the phone’s storage.
  3. Drag the music files from the Chromebook into a folder on the phone.

Mac

Samsung’s transfer guide describes connecting the phone by USB and using Android File Transfer. Because Mac software availability and compatibility can change, check Samsung’s current instructions and the transfer tool’s current compatibility before relying on this method.

Find and play transferred tracks

Use My Files

Open My Files on the phone and select Audio to browse music files saved on the device.

Use Samsung Music

Open Samsung Music and allow access to device files if prompted. The app scans saved files and adds compatible music to its library; browse Tracks or Albums. Samsung lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC among supported formats, but compatibility can vary by device and software. See Samsung’s Samsung Music guidance and its Google Play listing for app details.

Use YouTube Music

To make local files visible in YouTube Music, open Library & downloads, turn on Show device files, and grant file access if the app requests it. Samsung lists this as another way to find music stored on the phone in its transfer guide.

Save music for offline listening in a streaming app

Streaming downloads use the chosen service’s own controls and eligibility rules; they do not create ordinary audio files that you can move into another player. In Spotify’s current support guidance, mobile users cannot download an individual song directly. Add the song to a playlist, then download that playlist. Downloaded content can be played offline, and Spotify’s Offline Mode can restrict playback to downloaded content. See Spotify’s offline-listening instructions.

Spotify download and retention rules

Spotify says downloads may be removed if you do not connect to the internet at least once every 30 days, reinstall the app, or download on more than five devices. App or SD-card problems can also affect downloads. Spotify recommends keeping at least 1 GB of free memory. These are Spotify-specific rules and guidance, not general requirements for other music apps. Its storage guidance says Android users can select an external SD card for downloads if the device has one and it is available to the app; do not assume every Galaxy S23 setup has an external card option.

Check file compatibility before troubleshooting playback

  • If a copied track does not appear, confirm it was copied to the phone rather than left on the computer, then check My Files > Audio.
  • If Samsung Music cannot see files, open the app and grant device-file access if requested so it can scan the music.
  • If a file appears but will not play, its format may not be supported on that device or software version. Samsung’s listed formats include MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC, but support is not universal.
  • If a purchased track fails, DRM protection may prevent playback on the Galaxy device; Samsung explicitly cautions that protected purchased music may not be compatible.
