To take a screenshot on a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, press and release the Side button and Volume Down at the same time. For a long page, tap the Scroll capture icon in the toolbar that appears after the screenshot. You can also enable Palm swipe to capture as an alternative.
Take a screenshot with the buttons
- Open the screen you want to capture.
- Press the Side button and Volume Down together, then release both promptly. Samsung’s Galaxy guidance describes a brief simultaneous press; a flash indicates the screenshot was captured. Holding the buttons can trigger other device behavior. Samsung’s US screenshot guide illustrates the button combination for the S21 Ultra.
Use Palm swipe instead
If you prefer a gesture, enable it in Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures > Palm swipe to capture, then swipe the edge of your hand across the display. If the option is not at that path, search Settings for “Palm swipe to capture”; menu names and locations can vary by software version or region. Samsung notes that gestures vary across models and software versions, and Palm swipe does not work while the keyboard is displayed. Samsung’s UK guidance covers the gesture and its availability.
Button shortcut or Palm swipe?
| Method | What you need | When it may be useful |
|---|---|---|
| Side button + Volume Down | Press both physical buttons together briefly. | A straightforward option that does not require enabling a gesture. |
| Palm swipe | Turn on Palm swipe to capture in Settings; the keyboard must be closed. | An alternative when using the buttons is awkward, provided the gesture is available on your software version. |
Capture more than one screen
Scroll capture extends a regular screenshot down a scrollable page; it is not a separate way to start a capture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Take a screenshot with the buttons or Palm swipe.
- When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap the Scroll capture icon, shown as downward arrows. Tap it again to keep extending the image.
The icon appears only when the content continues beyond the visible screen. If the toolbar does not appear, check Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder > Show toolbar after capturing. The label or path may differ by software version or region. Samsung Canada describes the toolbar setting and the Gallery and My Files locations in its Galaxy screenshot guide, updated June 25, 2026; Samsung Saudi Arabia also explains Scroll capture in its support guide, updated April 23, 2026.

The buttons do not capture the screen
- Press Side and Volume Down simultaneously, then release; the press should be brief.
- Check whether a bulky case makes either button difficult to press. Samsung Australia notes that cases can interfere with pressing both buttons at exactly the same time. Samsung Australia Support
Palm swipe does nothing
- Confirm Palm swipe to capture is enabled in Settings.
- Move the edge of your hand across the display rather than touching with your palm flat.
- Close the on-screen keyboard before trying again.
Scroll capture is missing
- Check that the page can scroll beyond the visible screen; there is no need for Scroll capture on a single-screen image.
- Make sure Show toolbar after capturing is enabled if the toolbar itself is missing.
- Some apps or screens may not support Scroll capture.
An app says screenshots are blocked
Some apps restrict screenshots for security reasons. Samsung gives banking apps as an example. If an app displays a security restriction, respect it; the available Samsung guidance does not establish a supported setting or tool for bypassing that block. Samsung’s US guide
