For a temporary glitch, restart your Galaxy. To fix one misbehaving setting, reset that setting rather than wiping the device. Use a factory data reset only when you intend to erase personal data, and back up first. If you cannot open Settings, recovery mode or remote erasure may be options, but each has prerequisites and can still require the accounts previously used on the device.
Choose the right kind of reset
A restart and a factory reset do different things. Samsung says restarting closes open apps without affecting long-term stored data; a factory data reset deletes personal data from the device. Samsung Belgium describes restarting as a soft reset in its restart guidance.
| Option | What it changes | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Restart | Closes open apps; does not affect long-term stored data. | A temporary freeze or glitch. |
| Reset a specific setting | Resets selected settings, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth or mobile network settings. | A problem appears limited to a particular connection or preference. |
| Reset all settings | Restores default settings without erasing accounts, personal data, security or language settings, or downloaded-app settings. | You want to undo settings changes but keep apps and personal data. |
| Factory data reset | Deletes personal data and restores the device to its factory settings. | You are preparing the device for transfer or need a complete wipe after other troubleshooting. |
| Recovery-mode reset | Wipes user data from the recovery menu. | Settings cannot be used and you have verified the model-specific procedure. |
| Remote erase | Erases the device remotely when account, network, and remote-control prerequisites are met. | The device is unavailable to you but eligible remote features were enabled beforehand. |
Samsung warns that a factory reset for a boot-loop problem should be a last resort after earlier troubleshooting. If a third-party app may be responsible, consider a diagnostic option such as Safe Mode or Maintenance Mode before erasing. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for a Galaxy that keeps restarting.

Samsung warns that a factory reset permanently deletes data such as customized settings, downloaded apps, messages, contacts, and photos. Back up first using an option that suits your device, such as a Samsung account, Google account, or Smart Switch. Check that the backup completed and review any app-specific transfer steps: a backup should not be assumed to include every app’s private data or every account-specific item. Samsung’s regional pages explain factory-reset preparation and backing up personal data.

- Make sure you know the screen-lock credential and the Google and Samsung account credentials associated with the device. Verification may be required during setup after erasure.
- If you plan to sell or give away the Galaxy, remove the Google account through the device settings before resetting it. A reset is not a way to bypass ownership verification.
- If the device has an encrypted microSD card, decrypt it before wiping. Samsung warns that the device may otherwise be unable to read the card’s data afterward; preserve anything you need from it first.
- For a Settings reset with a Samsung account signed in, Samsung says Samsung account credentials may be requested. A network connection is required to log out of that account during completion.
Reset an accessible Galaxy through Settings
On many Galaxy phones and tablets, the general route is Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. Menu names and locations can differ by model and software version, so treat this as a guide rather than a guaranteed screen-by-screen match. Samsung’s US factory-reset instructions give this sequence:
- Open Settings, then tap General management.
- Tap Reset, then Factory data reset.
- Review the information about what will be removed. Tap Reset.
- Enter the lock credential if requested, then tap Delete all to confirm. Samsung account credentials may also be required if an account is signed in.
- Wait for the device to restart and display the initial setup screens.
Do not interrupt the process once the wipe begins. Have network access available for account sign-out and be ready to complete account verification during setup.

Reset settings without deleting your data
If the problem is tied to a setting, a narrower reset can avoid erasing personal data and downloaded apps. In Settings > General management > Reset, Samsung lists options including Reset all settings, Reset mobile network settings, Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings, and Reset accessibility settings. The exact options and wording can vary by device and software version.
Samsung says Reset all settings restores default settings without deleting accounts, personal data, security or language settings, or downloaded-app settings. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth reset means reconnecting to networks and pairing accessories again. Choose the narrowest reset that addresses the issue; resetting unrelated settings can create extra setup work. Samsung describes these choices in its reset options guide.

If Settings is unavailable: use recovery mode carefully
Samsung’s recovery procedure is intended for situations where you cannot use the normal Settings route. Its UK instructions say to switch the phone off and connect it to a computer with a USB cable before entering recovery. The button combination varies by model, so look up the exact instructions for your Galaxy model rather than trying a sequence from another device generation. A compatible USB data cable is needed for the described computer-connected procedure; match the cable and ports to your phone and computer.
- Find Samsung’s recovery instructions for your exact model, then switch off the device and connect it to a computer with a USB cable as directed.
- Use the model-specific button combination to enter recovery mode.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Delete all user data or Wipe data/factory reset, then select it with the power button.
- Confirm the wipe when prompted. When it finishes, select Reboot system now.
Samsung says the reset may take a few minutes. Button-based resets may trigger Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP): you may need to verify a Google account previously registered on the device before setup can continue. Consult Samsung’s recovery-mode and reset instructions for the regional guidance.

Erase a Galaxy remotely
Remote erasure is only an option when the service and required controls were set up before the device became inaccessible. Samsung’s UK guidance describes using SmartThings Find to locate, lock, or erase a device. Its listed prerequisites for a remote factory reset include the device being connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, signed in to a Samsung account, and having remote control and remote unlock enabled. Service names and availability can vary by region and software version.

Account verification after a reset
Google Factory Reset Protection is designed to protect a device that is lost or stolen. After certain reset methods—Samsung specifically notes button-based resets—the Galaxy may require verification with a Google account previously registered on it. A signed-in Samsung account can also require its credentials during a Settings reset. Know the relevant credentials before wiping; if you cannot complete Google verification or initial setup, Samsung US directs owners to a Samsung service center for assistance in its reset support guidance.
For a sale or handoff, remove the Google account in Settings before the reset, following the steps for your Android version. If the device has already been reset and is asking for the previous owner’s credentials, contact the owner or Samsung support; do not treat the prompt as a problem to bypass.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Temporary problem: restart first.
- One connection or preference is faulty: reset the matching setting.
- You can open Settings and intend to wipe the device: back up, confirm you have account credentials, then use Factory data reset.
- Settings will not open: check the recovery procedure for the exact model and prepare for account verification.
- The Galaxy is not in your hands: remote erasure may work only if it is online, linked to the required Samsung account, and remote controls were enabled beforehand.
