Buy the Galaxy S26 series if your priority is the longest remaining Samsung software-support runway. Samsung’s 2026 flagship announcement gives the series seven generations of operating-system upgrades and seven years of security updates from its global launch. The Galaxy S24 series has the same headline commitment, but its January 2024 launch means a larger part of that period has already elapsed. The Galaxy A57 5G and A37 5G are lower-cost alternatives with a six-generation, six-year policy.
Support is not delivered identically everywhere. Samsung says update timing and availability can vary by model, market and carrier, so confirm the exact regional model before paying. Current prices and stock also change by country and retailer.
The short answer
- Best for maximum remaining support: Galaxy S26 series. It is the newest documented Samsung line with the full seven-generation OS and seven-year security commitment.
- Best older flagship option: Galaxy S24 series. It promises the same nominal term, but launched about two years earlier.
- Best midrange route: Galaxy A57 5G or A37 5G. Samsung promises up to six Android/One UI generations and up to six years of security updates.
- Be cautious with S21/S22-era phones. Eligible models were covered by an earlier policy of up to four OS generations and up to five years of security updates.
Within the S26 family, choose S26, S26+ or S26 Ultra according to the size, camera, performance features and price that are available in your market. The support term is a series policy; it does not make every model identical.
How to compare Samsung software support
OS upgrades and security updates are different
An OS-upgrade promise covers major Android and One UI releases. A security-update promise covers patches intended to address vulnerabilities. A phone can receive security fixes after it has stopped receiving major feature upgrades, so compare both figures rather than treating “years of support” as one number.

Count from the launch commitment
Samsung’s stated period starts from the relevant global launch, not from the day you personally activate a handset. A phone bought late in its sales cycle therefore has less time left than a newly launched phone carrying the same headline term. This is why the S24 and S26 policies look equal on paper but are not equal for a new buyer in October 2026.
“Up to” is a qualification
The A57 5G and A37 5G announcement uses “up to” for both OS generations and security years. Treat that as Samsung’s maximum stated coverage, not a guarantee that every regional configuration will receive every release on the same date.
Documented Galaxy support commitments
| Galaxy line | OS upgrade commitment | Security-update commitment | Launch evidence | What it means for a 2026 buyer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 series | Seven generations | Seven years from global launch | 2026 global launch; US general availability began March 11, 2026 | Strongest remaining runway among the documented choices |
| Galaxy S24 series | Seven generations | Seven years from launch | January 2024 announcement and worldwide availability | Same nominal term, with more of it already consumed |
| Galaxy A57 5G and A37 5G | Up to six generations | Up to six years | 2026 announcement | Long midrange coverage when flagship features are less important |
Why the Galaxy S26 series is the safest long-term buy
The S26 series combines the longest policy documented here with the latest launch date. Because the commitment starts in 2026, someone buying during the current sales window is close to the beginning of the support clock rather than joining a line that has already been updated for several years.

Samsung’s US announcement says general availability began March 11, 2026, through Samsung.com, Samsung Experience Stores, Amazon Stores, Best Buy and participating carriers. Those channels establish where Samsung said the phones would be sold in the United States; they do not guarantee that a particular storage tier, color or carrier version remains in stock. Check your local storefront before making a decision.
Choosing among S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra
All three belong to the S26 series, so the support policy should not be the deciding difference. Instead, compare the physical size you can comfortably use, the camera and performance features you actually need, and the price of the exact regional configuration. A larger or more feature-rich model is not automatically a better longevity purchase if it exceeds your budget or remains unused.
- Choose the standard S26 when you want the series’ support policy in the most compact form offered by the line.
- Choose S26+ when your preference is a larger phone and your local pricing makes that size worthwhile.
- Choose S26 Ultra only when its additional hardware capabilities match your work, photography or other requirements; the software-support term alone does not justify paying more.
When the Galaxy S24 still makes sense
The S24 series is not a short-support phone. Samsung announced seven OS generations and seven years of security updates for it, matching the S26 headline policy. The important difference is elapsed time: S24 models entered the market in January 2024, so a purchase in October 2026 starts with a substantially shorter remaining period than a comparable S26 purchase.

An S24 can be rational when a reputable local seller offers a meaningful price advantage, when you prefer its available size or hardware, or when the S26 models are unavailable for your carrier. Do not assume that a discounted S24 has the same remaining runway as a newly launched S26 simply because both announcements use the number seven.

Samsung positions the A57 5G and A37 5G as midrange alternatives. Their stated maximum is six Android and One UI generations plus six years of security updates. That is one year less on each measure than the S26 and S24 policies, but it is still a substantial commitment for buyers who do not need a flagship model.
Pick between these two using the current regional specification sheet, price and carrier compatibility. The support statement applies to the named models, while features, memory configurations and network bands can differ by market. Verify the model number printed on the retailer’s listing or the phone’s box rather than relying only on a family name.

What the older S21 and S22 policy means
In February 2022, Samsung said selected S21 and S22 phones and other selected ranges could receive up to four generations of One UI/Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. “Selected” matters: eligibility was not universal across every Galaxy model, and Samsung noted that timing, features and hardware support could vary.
These phones can still be usable, but they are a poor choice when your primary goal is the longest remaining support. Before buying an older unit, obtain its exact model number, original launch date and current update status. Never extend the S21/S22 policy to an unlisted Galaxy model.

Regional and carrier checks before you buy
Samsung maintains regional software-version tables because the same family name can receive different firmware versions and schedules in different markets. Its Japan support page, updated October 7, 2026, lists current versions by model and directs carrier customers to carrier-specific information: Samsung Japan’s current Galaxy software versions.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

- Record the exact model code. Compare the code on the listing, box or device settings with the model sold by your carrier.
- Check the country-specific Samsung support page. Look for the model’s current Android/One UI version and security-patch information.
- Ask the carrier about firmware control. Carrier certification can affect when an update is released even after Samsung publishes it.
- Confirm network compatibility. A parallel-import model may have different bands, services or update channels from the version intended for your country.
- Check the seller’s return terms. This protects you if the delivered model code or regional software support differs from the listing.
What Samsung’s promise does not guarantee
- Same-day updates worldwide: Samsung’s regional guidance makes clear that availability and timing can vary.
- Identical features on every model: Samsung’s earlier policy says hardware specifications must support the upgrade experience, so a new OS does not imply every feature appears on every device.
- Perfect physical condition for the entire term: A software commitment does not promise a battery, display, charging port or other component will remain healthy for seven years.
- Flagship speed forever: The policy specifies update delivery, not a measured performance lifespan. App requirements, storage wear and battery aging can still affect day-to-day use.
- Unlimited repair or replacement coverage: Software support is separate from warranty, parts availability and repair policies.
A practical buying framework
Choose S26 when support time outranks price
Select the S26 series when you want the newest starting point for Samsung’s longest documented commitment and can afford the local purchase price. Compare S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra on hardware needs, not on different support lengths.
Choose S24 when the deal is compelling
An S24 is reasonable if its earlier launch is reflected in the price and its remaining support period meets your planned ownership horizon. Calculate from the 2024 launch, not from your purchase date.
Choose A57 5G or A37 5G for balanced longevity and cost
The A-series options suit buyers who want a multi-year update commitment without paying flagship prices. Verify the “up to” wording against your regional model and accept that midrange hardware may offer fewer advanced capabilities.

Samsung’s longer-support direction
Samsung’s expanded policy follows a stated goal of making Galaxy devices last longer. In the company’s February 10, 2022 announcement, TM Roh, Samsung’s President and Head of MX Business, said: “We work hard to bring our Galaxy users innovative mobile experiences that are built to last. And many of our customers are choosing to keep their devices for longer, whether they love their specific smartphone model or want to help contribute to a more sustainable world,” Samsung Global Newsroom, February 10, 2022. That statement explains the longevity rationale; the model-specific launch announcements are the operative source for each phone’s actual commitment.
Final buying advice
Start with the Galaxy S26 series, then select the S26, S26+ or S26 Ultra that fits your needs and local budget. Consider the S24 only with a clear price or availability advantage, and use the A57 5G or A37 5G when a six-year midrange policy is sufficient. Before checkout, verify the exact model, market, carrier and current firmware schedule; those details determine how the published support promise works in practice.
