If you changed your Galaxy pattern within the past 72 hours and the phone runs One UI 6.1 or later, try Samsung’s previous-pattern recovery before erasing anything. If that option is unavailable, the documented recovery paths are remote erasure or a model-specific factory reset; both delete phone data. Before resetting, make sure you can sign in to the Google Account previously used on the device.
First, check whether your previous pattern can unlock the phone
Samsung documents a non-destructive recovery route for Galaxy models running One UI 6.1 or later. It works only within 72 hours of changing the screen lock, while the previous lock data is retained. Samsung India Support’s instructions, last updated July 10, 2026, say the recovery link appears after five or more failed attempts. Choose “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” when it appears, then enter the previous pattern.
The route is available once per lock type. Three incorrect entries for the previous lock end this recovery route, so do not use it for guesses. Screen wording and appearance can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s Galaxy lock-recovery instructions explain the current steps.

If the previous pattern is not available, erase the phone
A reset is an erase, not a way to bypass the pattern while keeping the phone’s local data. Samsung warns that its SmartThings Find “Erase data” action permanently deletes data. Sign in to the Samsung Account, select the device, and choose “Erase data.” An offline phone will process the command when it next comes online. See Samsung’s instructions.

Google Find Hub can also factory-reset an eligible Android phone remotely. Google requires that the device be powered on, connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi, signed in to a Google Account, have Find Hub turned on, and be visible on Google Play. Erasure permanently deletes device data; an SD card may remain unaffected. You need the Google Account password to use the phone again. Review Google’s Find Hub erase guidance before choosing this route.
If remote erasure is not an option, Google says a locked Android phone can be erased using its power and volume buttons, but it directs users to the manufacturer for exact instructions. Button sequences differ by model, so use the current Samsung reset instructions for your specific Galaxy rather than a generic combination. Prepare accounts and backups before a factory reset
- Confirm the Google Account and password. Use the account previously associated with the phone; setup after reset may require it. Google advises waiting 24 hours if you recently changed that account’s password.
- Check what is backed up. Data saved to a Google Account may be restorable if it was backed up, but apps and their data are uninstalled by a reset.
- Prepare the phone for setup. Google’s general reset preparation recommends charging to at least 70% and connecting to Wi-Fi or mobile data. An internet connection is needed to sign in during setup.

Samsung’s Factory Reset Protection (FRP) helps prevent unauthorized use after a reset. If you reset outside the Settings factory-reset option, FRP may ask for the Google Account previously registered on the phone. On Android 9 and later, the previously configured screen lock may also be available for ownership verification. Why older “Forgot pattern” instructions may not work
Instructions that say to enter a Google Account after repeated pattern attempts apply only to Android 4.4 or earlier. For newer Android devices, Google’s current guidance is to erase the phone and set it up again. Google explains the version limit and current approach.

Choose based on eligibility, data, and account access
- If you recently changed the pattern and the Galaxy runs One UI 6.1 or later, try the previous-pattern route first, within its time window.
- If it does not apply, decide whether you accept permanent data loss. Check backup status before issuing an erase.
- Use SmartThings Find or Google Find Hub only if you can meet that service’s account and device requirements. Otherwise, use Samsung’s model-specific reset instructions.
- Before any reset, verify that you know the Google Account credentials needed for setup. If reset or ownership verification fails, contact Samsung authorized service.
