There is no universal list of settings that every Galaxy update resets, and Samsung does not say that every major update changes the same options on every phone or tablet. The useful approach is to identify your installed One UI version, read that update’s summary, then review the settings that affect your own notifications, privacy, app access, battery behavior, and display.
The paths below use Samsung’s One UI 7 instructions as concrete examples. Menus and features can differ by device, carrier, network, and software build. Samsung’s support material also notes that One UI 8 was rolling out when that page was accessed, so treat One UI 7 as a version-specific reference rather than a claim about the current release.
Start with the update summary and your installed One UI version
Before changing anything, find out what was installed. This prevents you from applying a One UI 7 instruction to a different release whose menus or behavior are not the same.
Read what the update changed
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update or System updates; the label varies by device.
- Choose Download and install if you are checking for an available package. If the update is already installed, look for Last update and open it to view the update contents and, on supported models, the user-interface version.
Samsung’s on-device help can provide release-specific instructions. Depending on the model, look near the bottom of Settings for User Manual, Tips and User Manual, Help, Tips and user Guide, or Tips and Help. The manual’s What’s new section is particularly useful after a large interface change.

Confirm the installed One UI build
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (or About tablet).
- Choose Software information.
- Record the One UI version, Android version, and build number before troubleshooting.
If a menu in this article does not exist, use the Settings search field with terms such as “notification,” “permission,” “power saving,” or “Google Play system update.” Samsung says functions can vary by device, carrier, and network, so a missing label is not proof that the update failed.
Do not infer availability from another owner’s phone
Samsung announced the One UI 7 rollout on March 18, 2025, with a planned start of April 7, 2025. The announcement named Galaxy S24 models and Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 first, followed by broader expansion, but qualified timing and availability by market, device, and other conditions. Those dates describe that historical rollout plan; they do not establish which version your device should have today.

Review notification and Quick settings navigation
One UI 7 changed the default way the two panels open. On the examples documented by Samsung, swipe down from the top-left or center of the screen to open notifications. Swipe down from the top-right to open Quick settings. Swipe left or right to move between the panels.
Choose separate or combined panels
Separate panels can make it quicker to reach toggles without moving through notification cards. A combined panel may feel more familiar if you previously opened notifications and Quick settings with one swipe.
- Swipe down from the top-right to open Quick settings.
- Tap Edit, shown with a pencil icon on supported builds.
- Open Panel settings.
- Tap Notification and quick settings view.
- Select Together to combine them.
- Go back and tap Done.
With the combined choice, a swipe down from either side opens both areas. The exact labels can differ on tablets, carrier variants, or later One UI releases. If your device does not show this option, check its update notes rather than assuming the setting was removed.
Test the gestures you actually use
After selecting a layout, lock and unlock the device, then test a swipe from each upper corner and from the center. Confirm that you can reach frequently used controls such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, brightness, and device controls without accidentally exposing notification content in situations where privacy matters.

Check notification appearance and lock-screen privacy
A major update can alter where an alert appears without changing whether the underlying app is allowed to notify you. Review both the global appearance and the individual app controls.
Inspect global notification presentation
Open Settings > Notifications. Samsung’s One UI 7 guide documents controls for status-bar icons, pop-up style, app notifications and categories, and lock-screen notifications. Depending on the software build, lock-screen presentation can include Dot, Icons, or Cards.
- Status-bar icons: Decide how much information should be represented at the top of the screen.
- Pop-up style: Check whether banners interrupt what you are doing or fail to draw attention to urgent messages.
- Lock-screen notifications: Choose a display style that lets you see useful alerts without revealing message details to someone looking at the locked device.
Verify important apps individually
In the Notifications area, select an app and review its notification categories. Keep categories needed for calls, authentication codes, deliveries, or calendar reminders, and disable categories that create noise. Category names and available switches are app-dependent, so do not expect every app to offer identical controls.
If an alert is absent, first check whether the app’s notifications are enabled and whether a category was turned off. Then check the app’s own notification settings. This is more reliable than assuming the update reset all notification permissions; Samsung does not establish that every major update performs such a reset.

Galaxy AI settings are optional and appear only on eligible devices and software versions. Do not change them simply because a major update was installed.
Manage Now Brief content
Samsung’s One UI 7 guide says Now Brief is enabled by default on supported devices. To select the types of information it can present, open Settings > Galaxy AI and review the available Now Brief content controls. Disable categories that are irrelevant or that you do not want surfaced in a brief summary.
Choose where Galaxy AI processing occurs
On devices that provide the documented privacy option, open Settings > Galaxy AI and enable Process data only on device if local processing matches your preference. Availability and the functions affected depend on the model, region, and software build. Enabling the option can limit or change features that require processing beyond the device, so read any explanation shown on screen before confirming.

Control the Now Bar
To manage information shown in the lock-screen experience, open Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Now bar. Review which activities or services can appear. This is a visibility choice: reducing the content can make the lock screen quieter and more private, while leaving relevant items enabled can make ongoing activities easier to follow.

Do not assume One UI changed every permission. Instead, inspect permissions when an app stops working, loses a feature, or has been unused for an extended period.
Open an app’s permission page
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the affected app.
- Tap Permissions.
- Choose an access level for each relevant permission.
Samsung lists choices such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, and Don’t allow; some apps show additional choices. Match the access to the function. A navigation app may need location while it is being used, a camera app needs camera access to take pictures, and a messaging app may need notification permission to alert you. If continuous background access is not necessary, a narrower option limits exposure and interruptions.
Separate permission problems from app-update problems
If the permission is allowed but the app still freezes or closes, update the app before deleting data. Check both the Galaxy Store and Google Play for updates. Samsung notes that older Android app builds may not work correctly on newer devices or software.
Also install a Google Play system update when one is offered: Settings > About phone or About tablet > Software information > Google Play system update. This component is separate from the main One UI package.
Use data clearing as a later step
Clearing an app’s data can remove sign-ins, downloaded content, preferences, and locally stored information. Try updating the app, restarting the device, and checking permissions first. If you eventually clear data, make sure the app’s account information and any required backups are available before confirming.
Investigate battery drain and display changes symptom by symptom
Battery behavior can change temporarily after a major update while apps and system services finish work, but Samsung’s guidance is to inspect the actual source of excessive use rather than apply a universal “best” configuration.

Find apps using unusual background power
Open the battery section in Settings and look for apps with unusually high background consumption. If one app dominates the list, update it, review its background activity and location access, and compare behavior after a normal charging cycle. Restricting background activity can delay synchronization or notifications, so apply it only when that trade-off is acceptable.
Check location-related activity
Location services can increase power use when multiple apps request location in the background. Review which apps have location access and choose a less permissive option where the app does not need continuous tracking. Avoid disabling location globally if you rely on emergency, navigation, device-finding, or automation features.

Samsung’s One UI 7 support material says Power saving can turn on Dark mode or set the screen timeout to 30 seconds. Open Settings > Battery > Power saving to inspect those options and change them if the resulting behavior is inconvenient.
Power saving can also affect motion smoothness. Samsung notes that Adaptive motion smoothness is unavailable while Power saving is enabled; the device may use Standard motion smoothness instead. If scrolling feels less fluid, check whether Power saving is active and whether the selected motion setting matches your preference. Disabling a power-saving feature may restore display behavior while reducing battery runtime, so treat this as a choice rather than a guaranteed battery fix.
Record the symptom before changing several toggles
Note when the drain occurs, which apps appear at the top of battery use, whether the phone is warm while idle, and whether the screen or network is involved. Change one relevant setting at a time. This makes it possible to identify the cause instead of losing track after multiple simultaneous changes.

Samsung says it often releases software updates after a One UI upgrade to deliver patches, fixes, or corrections for issues such as freezing and crashes. When a problem continues, open Settings > Software update or System updates and choose Download and install to check.

No follow-up package may be available for your model or region. If the phone reports that it is up to date, continue with app updates, permission checks, and the device-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly forcing the same update search.

What to do when an app stopped working after One UI
Use this order to preserve data and narrow the cause:
- Restart the phone or tablet once.
- Open the app’s page in Galaxy Store or Google Play and install any available update.
- Check Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions and restore only the access the app needs.
- Install a pending Google Play system update through Settings > About phone/About tablet > Software information > Google Play system update.
- Check the app’s own settings for account, notification, location, or background restrictions.
- Only then consider clearing the app cache or data, understanding that clearing data can remove local information and sign you out.
- If several unrelated apps fail, check for a Samsung follow-up system update and use Samsung’s device-specific support instructions before considering a full reset.
A single broken app points more strongly toward that app, its permissions, or compatibility. Widespread failures across unrelated apps justify checking system updates and storage, documenting error messages, and seeking model-specific support.
Common questions after a Galaxy update
Did my Galaxy update change my notification settings?
It may change the way panels open or add presentation controls, but there is no evidence that every update resets every notification choice. Check Settings > Notifications, the affected app’s notification categories, and the lock-screen display style.
Why is my Samsung battery draining after an update?
Inspect background app power use, location activity, and Power saving side effects first. Samsung’s guidance is symptom-led; it does not promise that one toggle will improve battery life on every device.
Why did an app stop working after a One UI update?
Update the app in Galaxy Store or Google Play, check its permissions, and install any Google Play system update. Older Android app builds may be incompatible with newer device software. Clear app data only after less disruptive steps because it can remove local data.
What if the menu path in this checklist is different?
Confirm the One UI version under Settings > About phone/tablet > Software information, search Settings for the feature name, and consult the device’s built-in manual. Samsung documents differences by device, carrier, and network.
