To enable notification history on a Samsung Galaxy, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history, then switch on the control at the top. The phone starts recording only after you enable it, so it cannot recover alerts that were dismissed earlier. If the page is empty immediately afterward, receive another notification and check again later.
What Samsung notification history does
Notification history is a built-in Android feature that keeps a temporary record of alerts your Galaxy has received. It is useful when you accidentally swipe away a reminder, need to identify the app that made an unexpected sound, or want to revisit a notification you snoozed.
The feature is a record of notifications, not a complete backup of the apps that generated them. Samsung support describes it as a place to review dismissed or snoozed alerts and notifications received recently. What appears depends on what the app included in its notification and on your phone’s software version.

Samsung’s US support wording says, “Your notification history will appear here from now on.” That wording is important: the history is not retroactive. The switch must be enabled before an alert can be captured.

How to turn on notification history on a Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings from the app screen or notification shade.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings.
- Tap Notification history.
- Turn on the switch at the top of the page.
- Leave the setting enabled, then return to this page whenever you need to review captured notifications.
After step 5, the phone begins collecting eligible notifications. An empty list at this point is normal because no notifications have been recorded since activation. Wait until an app sends a new alert, then open the same menu again.
How to review a notification you dismissed
Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history again. Recent captured notifications are grouped on that screen, usually with the app name and the notification text that was available to Android.
Use the list to identify the source of a sound or to recover the information shown in an alert. If the notification still represents an action you need to take, open the originating app directly; notification history does not guarantee that tapping an old entry will recreate the original action screen.

What is saved, and what is not

Can you see notifications you already cleared?
Yes, but only when the feature was already enabled when those notifications arrived and they are still within the available retention window. Clearing an alert from the notification shade does not necessarily remove its captured entry immediately.

If you enabled history after clearing the alert, there is no built-in way to reconstruct that earlier notification from this setting. Check the app itself for an inbox, activity log, reminder list, or message archive instead.
How long does Samsung notification history keep alerts?
Samsung Colombia’s support article states that dismissed notifications are retained for 24 hours and then removed automatically. Treat that as Samsung’s regional guidance rather than a promise that every Galaxy model and software build behaves identically. Samsung support also notes that menu behavior can vary by device and software version.

If an alert contains information you may need later, save it in the originating app or another appropriate place while it is still available.
Can notification history show deleted WhatsApp messages?
It cannot act as a complete WhatsApp message archive. Samsung Colombia says notification history may let you review visible text from a WhatsApp notification, but images and audio are not available there.
The result also depends on the notification that WhatsApp generated. If message previews are disabled, restricted by privacy settings, or omitted by the app, the history entry will not contain text that was never shown in the notification. Notification history does not restore a deleted conversation, download missing media, or reproduce the full WhatsApp interface.

Why the history page is empty
You just enabled the switch
An empty screen immediately after activation is expected. The feature has no earlier records to display. Receive one or more new notifications, dismiss one, and return to the page.

No notification has arrived since activation
Notification history records incoming alerts; opening an app or sending yourself an ordinary message does not prove that Android generated a notification. Test with an app that normally posts notifications, and confirm that its notification permission is enabled.
The app’s notifications are blocked
Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, select the relevant app, and check that notifications and the needed notification categories are allowed. An app that is blocked, muted, or configured not to display a category may not produce an entry to review.
The phone is using a different settings layout
Samsung changes menu labels and placement across Galaxy models, Android releases, and One UI versions. Use the Settings search field for Notification history if the listed path does not match your screen. Do not assume that a missing result means the phone is damaged; first verify the model and software version against Samsung’s support information for your region.
The list was cleared when the feature was disabled
If the switch was turned off and later enabled again, previously stored entries will not return. Samsung Colombia’s guidance says disabling the feature deletes the records held by it.

Android and regional availability
Samsung Colombia’s support page describes notification history for Galaxy devices running Android 11 or later. That is useful compatibility guidance, but it is not a guarantee for every regional model, carrier edition, or later software customization.
Samsung’s US and Colombian support pages use the same basic menu path, while also warning that screens can differ by device and software version. A phone running a newer Android or One UI release may rename an item, place it under a slightly different submenu, or expose the setting only after a software update.
When the option is absent, record the phone’s model number and Android/One UI versions from Settings > About phone > Software information. Then consult Samsung support for that exact model and country. Updating the phone may change the menu, but do not perform a reset solely to look for notification history.
Using notification history to identify an unknown alert sound
- Enable notification history before trying to diagnose the sound.
- When the sound occurs, open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history.
- Look for the newest entry and note the app name and notification category.
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose that app, and inspect its categories, sound, vibration, and permission settings.
- Change only the category that is responsible, if the app exposes separate controls for messages, reminders, downloads, or other events.
This method works only if the sound came with a notification that Android captured. Media playback, alarms, calls, and some system events may not appear as ordinary notification entries.
Privacy and practical limitations
Notification history can expose snippets of private information to anyone who can unlock the phone and open Settings. Message previews, one-time codes, appointment details, and account alerts may remain visible during the retention period. Use the phone’s screen lock and consider disabling sensitive notification previews in the relevant app if other people can access the device.

Do not treat the feature as a forensic or compliance archive. Entries can expire, the displayed text can be incomplete, media may be absent, and disabling the switch deletes the stored history. For records that must be retained, use the app’s own export, inbox, or account history where available.
Useful scenarios and the right response
You swiped away a delivery or calendar reminder
Open notification history and look for the app’s recent entry. Use the details to return to the app and confirm the event there, because the history entry itself is temporary.
You heard a sound but did not see a banner
Check the newest entries for the app name, then inspect that app’s notification categories. If there is no entry, investigate alarms, media, calls, Bluetooth devices, and other sound sources rather than assuming notification history failed.
You want to recover a message from before setup
Notification history cannot backdate its records. Search the messaging app, email account, or service’s own activity view instead.
You need an attachment from a message alert
Use the originating app. Notification history may preserve visible text, but Samsung’s WhatsApp guidance excludes images and audio, and similar limitations can apply to other apps.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the exact path: Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history.
- Verify that the switch at the top is on.
- Generate a new test notification after activation.
- Check the app’s notification permission and category settings.
- Search Settings for “Notification history” if menu labels differ.
- Check Android and One UI versions under Settings > About phone > Software information.
- Use Samsung support for the exact model and region when the setting is missing.
- Do not disable the feature while troubleshooting if you need to preserve existing entries.
Bottom line
Enable Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history before you need it. It can recover recently dismissed or snoozed alerts and reveal which app generated a sound, but it cannot retrieve pre-activation notifications, preserve records indefinitely, or restore complete app content such as WhatsApp images and audio. Samsung Colombia’s guidance describes a 24-hour window for dismissed alerts and warns that turning the feature off deletes its stored records.
